Coolgardie Camel Farm is a by-appointment visitor experience where guests can meet Noel “The Camel Man,” get close to the camels and hear how they fit into Goldfields history. The Shire of Coolgardie includes the farm in its two-day itinerary; a Kalgoorlie Miner listing dated 3 October 2026 reports that Noel McKay began with two camels and an idea 40 years earlier. That account does not establish an exact opening date.
What visitors can experience at Coolgardie Camel Farm
The Shire describes a visit as a chance to meet Noel, hear stories about the camels and their role in developing the Goldfields, view camel-related items and get close to the animals. It presents the farm as a mix of animal encounter and local history, rather than simply a place to see camels. See the Shire of Coolgardie’s two-day itinerary.
A 2017 Kalgoorlie Miner report described a one-hour visit that included meeting and learning about the camels, a ride and a look at 1890s memorabilia. That is a historical description, not confirmation that rides or the same tour format are currently available. In that report, owner Noel McKay said of two young camels: “They love people, attention and affection.” The quote referred to those animals at the time, not necessarily the farm’s current herd.
Why camels are part of Coolgardie’s story
Camels are tied to the region’s transport history. The Shire says they were often used for transport and travelled along Bayley Street, Coolgardie’s main street. The Shire’s account of Coolgardie’s historical statue installations also records the town’s rapid growth after gold was discovered in the area by Arthur Bayley and William Ford in September 1892.

By 1898, according to the Shire’s 2020 account, Coolgardie was Western Australia’s third-largest town, with two stock exchanges, three breweries, 26 hotels, seven newspapers and two hospitals. These are figures for the town in that period, not for the farm or its visitors.
What “40 years on” means
A Kalgoorlie Miner listing dated 3 October 2026 says McKay started with two camels and an idea 40 years earlier, and that the property grew into a local tourism experience. It supports a broad four-decade story, but does not give an exact founding or opening date, anniversary date, current herd size or further details from the article. Read the Kalgoorlie Miner listing.

How to arrange a visit
The Shire’s itinerary explicitly marks the farm as a by-appointment visit. It does not provide a current farm phone number, email address, price, schedule or availability, so contact the farm or confirm arrangements through local visitor information before setting out. The booking number printed in a 2017 newspaper report is historical and should not be treated as current.
The Shire Visitor Centre is at Warden’s Court on Bayley Street in Coolgardie. Its listing gives the phone number 08 9026 6090 and hours of Monday to Sunday, 10 am to 3 pm, closed public holidays. These are visitor-centre details, not farm contact information; confirm them before relying on them. Check the Shire’s Visitors Centre and Museum information.

Placing the farm in a Coolgardie itinerary
The Shire includes the farm in a two-day itinerary alongside the Goldfields Exhibition Museum, Ben Prior Park, cemeteries and other historic and landscape stops. Its general suggestion to visit Coolgardie during the cooler June–November period applies to the destination overall, not to the farm’s opening calendar.
For comparison when planning other stops, the Shire lists Ben Prior Park as open daily from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and Warden Finnerty’s Residence as temporarily closed until further notice. Attraction statuses can change, so check the current Shire attractions information before travel.
