Use Playwright to render HTML in a browser, then save a screenshot with type: 'webp'. For markup you already have as a string, call page.setContent(); for a live website, navigate with page.goto(). The result is a raster image of the rendered page, not a direct conversion of HTML source into image bytes.
Install Playwright and render HTML as WebP
In a TypeScript project, install Playwright and its browser binaries using the project’s package manager. For example, with npm:

npx playwright install chromiumSave this as html-to-webp.ts. It loads a small HTML document, renders it, and writes a full-page WebP image:

});Run it with a TypeScript runner already used by your project, or compile it with your project’s TypeScript configuration and run the generated JavaScript. Playwright’s official Page API documents setContent(), screenshot(), and their options. The documentation does not specify one universal installed Playwright version, so use the API documentation matching the version pinned in your project.

Choose what the screenshot contains
Viewport or full page
By default, page.screenshot() captures the visible viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the entire scrollable page. Full-page output can be much taller than the viewport; use it when the complete document matters, and leave it off when you need a viewport-sized image.
WebP quality and file size
type: 'webp' explicitly selects WebP. The documented quality range is 0–100; 100 is the default and is lossless, while lower values use lossy compression. For example, to trade some pixel fidelity for potentially smaller output, add quality: 80 to the screenshot options. Compare the resulting image for your own content rather than assuming a particular file-size reduction.

CSS pixels or device pixels
The default scale is 'device', which captures device pixels and may create a larger image on a high-density display. Set scale: 'css' for one output pixel per CSS pixel. Choose deliberately if exact dimensions or comparable screenshots matter.
Opaque or transparent background
Use omitBackground: true to omit the default white background and allow transparency. This option does not apply to JPEG; WebP supports the documented transparency option.

Return a buffer instead of writing a file
If you omit path, Playwright returns the screenshot as a Node.js Buffer. That lets the application upload, store, or otherwise process the image without first writing it to disk:

Capture an existing web page
For a URL rather than an HTML string, navigate the page before taking the screenshot:

For HTML passed to setContent(), the documented default wait condition is the page’s load event. The API also documents other wait conditions; its documentation cautions against using networkidle for testing. Pages that keep network requests open may need a more specific readiness condition, such as waiting for an element that signals the content is ready.

Make captures reproducible
The same markup can render differently across operating systems, browser versions, hardware, settings, and headless mode. If you use WebP screenshots for visual regression, keep the browser and capture environment consistent. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing them; a snapshot filename ending in .webp selects WebP output. This assertion is part of the Playwright Test runner, not a requirement for ordinary screenshot capture. See the official visual comparisons documentation.
Rendering is also affected by viewport dimensions, CSS, available fonts, resource loading, and animation state. Set the viewport and stabilize dynamic content when pixel-for-pixel output matters. A screenshot preserves appearance as pixels; it does not retain the source document’s semantic HTML.
Troubleshooting
- The image is PNG, not WebP: specify
type: 'webp'. A.webppath can let Playwright infer the format, but setting both the extension and type avoids ambiguity. - The image is cut off: the default is viewport capture. Add
fullPage: trueif you need the full scrollable document. - Fonts, images, or styles are missing: verify their URLs and availability, then wait for the required assets or a page-specific ready signal before capture. A successful
loadevent does not guarantee every application-specific update has finished. - The screenshot changes between runs: check for changing content, animation, late-loading assets, font differences, and differences in browser or host environment. Stabilize those inputs for repeatable comparisons.
- The result is unexpectedly large: consider
scale: 'css'instead of device-pixel scale, or a lower WebP quality if some loss is acceptable. Inspect the output; no fixed size reduction is guaranteed. - Transparent output is not appearing: set
omitBackground: trueand ensure the page itself does not paint an opaque background over the area you expect to be transparent. The option is not applicable to JPEG.
