Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() method with type: 'webp' to capture HTML as WebP. For an HTML string, load it with page.setContent(); for a website, navigate with page.goto() first. Set a file path to save the result directly, or omit it to receive image bytes.
Capture an HTML string as WebP
Install Puppeteer and make its browser available according to your project’s setup. This example renders a string of HTML, saves the full page to a WebP file, and closes the browser even if capture fails:

Capture a page loaded from a URL
For a live page, navigate before taking the screenshot. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates page.goto() followed by page.screenshot(). Its example uses networkidle2, but no single navigation wait condition fits every site: pages with ongoing requests or delayed content may require a different readiness strategy.

If the page has client-rendered or late-loading content, wait for a selector or other page-specific readiness condition before capturing rather than assuming network idleness means the page is visually complete. Choose output quality and capture area
WebP quality
The quality option accepts values from 0 to 100 and applies to lossy formats, not PNG. The documentation does not prescribe a universally best WebP value. Treat it as a tunable choice: compare the output against your visual and file-size requirements instead of assuming a particular number will suit every image.

Viewport, full page, clip, or element
fullPage: truecaptures the full page; without it, the default is a viewport screenshot.- Use
clipwhen you need a rectangular region instead of the full page. - Use
ElementHandle.screenshot()when you need a specific element. Puppeteer’s guide says it attempts to scroll a hidden element into view.
These choices change what is captured, not the selected image format. Keep type: 'webp' in the screenshot options when you want WebP output. ScreenshotOptions reference · Screenshots guide
Background and transparency
Set omitBackground: true to hide the default white background and permit transparency, as described by the screenshot options reference. Whether a transparent result works as expected in your downstream viewer or workflow can depend on the rendering environment; verify it where you use the file.

Save to a file or use the returned bytes
Write a file
Passing path: 'screenshot.webp' writes the capture to that path. Puppeteer also infers the screenshot type from a file extension when a path is supplied, but setting both the extension and type: 'webp' makes the intended format explicit.
Receive the image data
Without base64 encoding, page.screenshot() returns a Uint8Array. Use that when your application needs to store, transform, or send the bytes itself rather than have Puppeteer write a file. Setting encoding: 'base64' selects a string return value instead. Page.screenshot() method

Troubleshooting
- The file is PNG instead of WebP: PNG is Puppeteer’s default. Set
type: 'webp'explicitly and use a.webppath. - The file is not where expected: Relative screenshot paths resolve from the current working directory. Use an absolute path or check the directory from which the process is running.
- The screenshot is missing page content: The page may not have finished rendering when capture started. Choose a page-appropriate navigation wait condition, or wait for the required selector or content before calling
screenshot(). - The capture includes only the visible area: Set
fullPage: truefor a full-page capture, or use a clip or element screenshot when you need a more specific region. - The output is larger or less faithful than desired: Adjust the lossy
qualityvalue and inspect the result for your particular content. The documented range is 0–100, but Puppeteer does not specify one ideal setting. - The browser remains open after an error: Put
browser.close()in afinallyblock so it runs whether capture succeeds or throws.
Version and behavior notes
Puppeteer’s API documentation page identifies version 25.12.0. WebP screenshot support was recorded in Puppeteer 10.4.0 on September 21, 2021. These facts establish documented support, not identical behavior across every Chromium build, runtime, or image viewer.
