To make a printable or millable terrain map, prepare a digital elevation model (DEM) in GIS, clip and scale the area you want, then export the surface as a closed 3D mesh. A DEM gives the map its relief; geological boundaries and other vector layers can be overlaid or incorporated into the model as distinct features, but they do not become 3D geology automatically. For a flexible desktop workflow, use QGIS with DEMto3D or GRASS GIS; a hosted terrain generator can be quicker when its controls and output suit the project.

What data goes into a 3D terrain or geological map?

A DEM is a regularly gridded representation of ground elevation. Its cells supply the height values from which the terrain surface is built. Autodesk describes DEM/DGM files as gridded XYZ ground-relief information used in GIS, earth sciences, planning, surveying, and engineering, while warning that a dataset’s resolution may be inadequate for small-scale studies. That makes source resolution a design constraint: converting a coarse DEM into a finely detailed mesh does not restore terrain detail that was never in the data.

Geological maps and administrative boundaries are commonly represented as vector layers, such as polygons and lines. In QGIS, those can be aligned with the elevation data and used as visible outlines or design features. If you want them to stand proud of, or be cut into, the terrain, you must make that effect part of the model or a later fabrication step; simply displaying a vector layer over a DEM does not make it a physical feature in an STL.

Which workflow should you choose?

Workflow What the evidence establishes Best fit and trade-offs
QGIS with DEMto3D QGIS can be used to merge DEM tiles, reproject, clip, and overlay vector boundaries. The QGIS Plugins Repository describes DEMto3D as exporting raster DEMs to STL ready for 3D printing. Useful when you want GIS control over the area and layers before creating an STL. The cited material does not state a universal build-size limit, dimensional tolerance, or licensing terms for every possible input dataset.
GRASS GIS r.out.3mf The GRASS GIS documentation says the module exports STL or 3MF and, by default, makes a watertight solid with a terrain top, flat base, and side walls. Useful when a closed terrain solid is important. The cited documentation does not state a universal build-size limit or a dimensional-accuracy guarantee.
Hosted terrain generator CartTerra’s FAQ documents vertical-exaggeration controls and downloadable files optimized for 3D printing and CNC machining. Potentially convenient when its available controls match the project. The cited material does not establish the same degree of GIS editing control as a desktop workflow, or a universal limit for source data, output size, or accuracy.

For any route, check source-data resolution and licensing, control over projection and scale, mesh closure, output size, and whether the export fits your slicer or CAM workflow. Printer bed dimensions or the CNC machine envelope may require splitting a large map into sections. Material, tool access, finishing, and hands-on preparation also affect total effort.

How to prepare the elevation and geology layers in QGIS

  1. Gather the DEM tiles and vector layers. Confirm that the elevation coverage includes the whole area of interest and that you are permitted to use the source data for the intended project. The available documentation does not establish licensing terms for every dataset, so check the terms for the actual files you obtain.
  2. Merge adjacent DEM tiles. Combining neighboring rasters gives you a continuous surface to work with. Noah Lorang’s 2016 Make project describes using USGS GTOPO30 GeoTIFF files and merging them in QGIS.
  3. Reproject the data into a suitable coordinate system. Reprojection helps align the DEM and vector layers and prepares them for a map with chosen physical dimensions. It can also affect the raster’s sampled values, so preserve the original data and inspect the resulting surface rather than assuming the transformation is lossless.
  4. Clip the layers to the intended map area. Limit the terrain and vectors to the boundary you plan to print or mill. Lorang’s project used Census boundary shapefiles before clipping its US elevation data.
  5. Overlay and inspect the geological or boundary features. Check that the lines and polygons align with the terrain after reprojection and clipping. Decide how the features should appear in the physical object—such as as surface markings, raised shapes, or cut lines—and plan for that in the model or fabrication process.

How to turn the prepared DEM into a solid model

Export an STL with DEMto3D

The QGIS Plugins Repository describes DEMto3D as exporting a raster DEM to STL for 3D printing. OpenTopography’s tutorial also uses the QGIS DEMto3D plugin for STL creation. An STL represents the model geometry; it does not carry all of the GIS layer information or geological meaning as editable map data. Keep the GIS project and its source layers if you may need to revise the map later.

Export a closed terrain solid with GRASS GIS

GRASS GIS’s r.out.3mf exports STL or 3MF. Its documented default is a watertight solid made of a terrain top, flat base, and side walls connecting them. A watertight output is a useful starting point for fabrication, but it does not remove the need to inspect the exported model for defects or confirm that its physical dimensions suit the machine.

How to set scale, thickness, and vertical exaggeration

Choose the map’s horizontal dimensions first, then set the model’s vertical scale and base thickness. If the source terrain appears too flat at the chosen footprint, vertical exaggeration can make the relief more visible. In principle, the exaggeration factor is the model’s chosen vertical scale divided by its horizontal scale; apply it deliberately, because exaggerated relief changes the apparent steepness and proportions of the landscape.

CartTerra’s FAQ documents a vertical-exaggeration control, but the available sources do not prescribe one factor for all terrain or fabrication methods. Inspect the result at its intended physical size. A thin base or narrow raised feature may be fragile in a print or difficult to mill; a thick base can consume more material or reduce the useful depth available for relief. No cited source establishes a universal base thickness, dimensional tolerance, or minimum printable or millable feature size.

How to validate the mesh before printing or milling

  • Check closure and surface quality. Look for holes, self-intersections, missing side walls, and a base that does not join the terrain. GRASS’s documented default creates a watertight solid, while other exports still need to be checked in the receiving software.
  • Review triangle density. A mesh that is unnecessarily dense can be cumbersome to edit or process. Simplification may help, but verify that it has not erased the ridges, valleys, boundaries, or other features you intend to retain.
  • Inspect thin and steep areas. Confirm that narrow peaks, edges, and raised map features can be made with the selected printer, tool, stock, and finishing process.
  • Confirm the physical envelope. Compare the model dimensions with the printer bed or CNC work area. If the map exceeds it, decide how to divide and align sections before fabrication.
  • Open the export in the actual production workflow. For a printer, orient and slice the model and inspect the resulting layers. For a CNC router, import the STL into CAM, choose appropriate roughing and finishing toolpaths, secure the stock, and verify the machine envelope and planned cuts before machining.

What changes between 3D printing and CNC milling?

The GIS preparation and terrain-mesh work can serve both processes, but fabrication planning differs. A printer needs an orientation and slicing plan that accommodates the model’s shape and the machine’s build area. Milling requires CAM toolpaths, suitable tooling and stock, secure workholding, and a toolpath that respects the router’s travel and cutting limits. The mesh alone is not a machining plan.

Material and finish matter as well. In a 2016 Make: Magazine project, Noah Lorang used USGS data, QGIS, MeshLab, and Autodesk Fusion 360 to create a wooden US map for a CNC router. The finished map was reported as about 7 feet wide, 4 feet tall, and approximately 3.5 inches of relief; it used 15 wood species and took about 200 hours of total effort. Those figures describe that particular build, not a standard time, size, or accuracy for CNC terrain maps. They do show how material choices and finishing can turn a digital model into a substantial fabrication project.

How accurate will the finished map be?

There is no universal dimensional tolerance established for DEM-to-printing or DEM-to-milling workflows. The result depends on the DEM’s resolution, coordinate transformation, chosen physical scale and vertical exaggeration, mesh processing, printer or CNC capability, tooling, stock, and finishing. Autodesk’s warning that some DEMs may not suit small-scale studies is a reminder to assess the data against the map’s intended use, not a numerical accuracy guarantee.

For a map intended to communicate broad terrain or geological patterns, evaluate whether the source data and output preserve the features that matter at the finished size. For work requiring surveyed or engineering-grade dimensions, the available sources do not provide enough information to claim a particular accuracy; validate the data and fabrication process against the project’s own requirements.
