Xbox does not provide a separate, documented recurring monthly dollar cap. The reliable setup has two parts: put a hard ceiling on a child’s Microsoft-account balance, then enable purchase approval for checkouts that need a card or exceed the child’s age setting. A child can still spend redeemed Xbox gift-card credit or other money already in that account without an approval prompt, so a zero balance plus Ask to Buy is the strictest arrangement.
These controls work only when the child uses their own Microsoft account in your Microsoft family group. If they use an adult profile, the child restrictions do not protect purchases; secure that adult profile with a console passkey as well.
What is the Xbox spending limit actually limiting?
Microsoft’s documented “limit” is the money available in the child’s Microsoft account, not a separate monthly allowance field. An organizer adds a chosen amount, and Microsoft says the account cannot be overdrawn. When the balance reaches zero, a paid Microsoft Store or Xbox Store checkout needs another funding source and, where configured, adult approval.
“You can add money to a child’s Microsoft account so they can learn to make safe and age-appropriate purchases on their own, within a limit. The child will always need approval to make purchases above their age limit or when they’re out of money in their Microsoft account.”

There is no corroborated Microsoft support setting for a recurring “$X per month” Xbox cap. Pages that describe a monthly-limit slider may reflect an older, regional, or third-party interface. Use the account-balance model described in Microsoft Family Safety and Xbox support instead.
| Setup | What the child can buy without a parent tap | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Zero balance + Ask to Buy | Nothing that requires funding; age-restricted purchases still require approval | Strictest control |
| Added balance (no card) | Microsoft/Xbox Store purchases up to the remaining balance, including redeemed gift-card credit | Allowance or reward |
| Card on child account + Require approval for every purchase | Purchases wait for organizer approval, subject to the platform and account being used | Families that need a card available but want a prompt every time |
Ask to Buy is called Ask a parent on the console and Ask to Buy in the Xbox Family Settings app. Family Safety uses Require approval for every purchase when a credit card is attached to the child account. Older pages may say Needs adult approval to buy things; look for the same spending control rather than relying on one exact phrase.
What must be set up before spending controls work?
The child must sign in with a separate Microsoft account that is a member of your Microsoft family group. Do not give the child the organizer’s profile: controls follow the child account, not the console itself.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Create or add the child account on Xbox
- Sign in on the console with the organizer’s Microsoft account.
- Press the Xbox button and choose Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings → Manage family members.
- Choose Add a family member, then add the child or create a Microsoft account using the child’s real date of birth.
During new-console setup, answer Yes when Xbox asks, “Will this console be used by kids?” Xbox Wire’s Jeff Rubenstein described that choice as the most important setup step for a family console. Children aged 13 or under generally need a child account, but age bands and consent rules vary by country; confirm the privacy defaults shown for your market instead of treating US age bands as universal.
Create or add the child account on the web
As the organizer, sign in at account.microsoft.com/family or family.microsoft.com, select Add a family member, and follow the account-creation or invitation steps. Microsoft Family Safety is free. The Xbox Family Settings app is also free and requires iOS 13 or later or Android 8.0 or later.
How do I require approval on the Xbox console?
On Xbox, the setting that blocks an unfunded or age-restricted purchase is Ask a parent under the child’s Buy & download privacy controls.

How do I set the balance and approval options in Family Safety?
Family Safety is the most useful place to load an allowance, enable purchase notifications, and configure approval when a card is on the child account.
Set the balance ceiling and notifications
- Open the Microsoft Family Safety app, or sign in at account.microsoft.com/family.
- Select the child. In the mobile app, scroll to the bottom of the child’s details.
- If the child has no funds, choose Add Money. If funds already exist, choose Manage spending.
- Turn on Get notified about every purchase if you want an alert for each Microsoft or Xbox Store transaction, and enable Activity reporting if you want an activity feed.
Microsoft says organizers are notified about purchases made by the child in Microsoft or Xbox stores, money added by another organizer, and requests approved by another organizer. Review the record under Spending activity.
Require approval for every purchase when a card is attached
This separate toggle is for a credit card saved on the child account. On the child’s Spending page, payment methods appear under Child’s payment methods.
- Add a payment method if you intentionally want a card available to the child.
- Sign out of the child account on the console and other devices.
- In Family Safety or at account.microsoft.com/family, open the child and choose Manage spending.
- Enable Require approval for every purchase.
If you do not want a card on the child account, skip this toggle. Use Add Money for a controlled balance, or leave the balance at zero and rely on Ask to Buy.
Add money as an allowance
- As organizer, open the child’s profile at account.microsoft.com/family.
- Choose Add money, or Manage spending → Add Money.
- Enter the amount and select Next.
- Choose a payment method under Child’s payment methods (or follow How to add a card), then select Buy.
The child can spend that balance in the Microsoft Store and Xbox Store until it is gone. An organizer can add more later and review the remaining amount and recent spending in the Xbox Family Settings app.

How does the Xbox Family Settings app handle Ask to Buy?
In the Xbox Family Settings app, turn on Ask to Buy for the child. The app’s description says you receive a notification when the child asks to purchase a game, app, or in-game item they do not have funding for. The app also lets you add money, check the remaining balance, and review recent spending.
Depending on the app version and region, the control may appear under the child’s account as Settings → Spending and may be labeled Needs adult approval to buy things. If you do not see “Ask to Buy,” open the child’s Spending area and look for that equivalent approval switch. The child account used in the app must be the same Microsoft account connected to the Xbox profile in your family group.
Xbox describes this arrangement as “Purchase Limits and Approvals”: add funds when you want to provide an allowance or reward, and use approval requests when the child lacks funding for a purchase.
Can an Xbox gift card be used as the spending limit?
Yes. An Xbox gift card or Microsoft gift card is a practical way to load stored value without saving a credit card on the child account. Microsoft says Xbox gift-card credit can buy games, add-ons, in-game content, apps, movies, television, and subscriptions such as Xbox Game Pass in Microsoft Stores, including Xbox.
Buy a digital code from the Microsoft Store or a participating retailer, then redeem it to the child’s Microsoft account if that is where you want the allowance held. Microsoft gift cards are usable across Microsoft Store locations, while availability and denominations vary by country.
The important limitation is that redeemed credit is spendable without Ask to Buy. Xbox support states that approval is not needed for currency or Xbox gift cards, and ESRB similarly notes that children can use gift cards and funds parents have already put in the account. Do not redeem a large card to the child’s account if your goal is to block every checkout. A zero balance is the strictest default; add only the amount you are comfortable allowing the child to spend.

Secure the adult profile
If a child is signed in as the organizer, child spending controls do not apply. Keep the adult profile for adults and let the child use the separate child profile. Home-console sharing can still let the child play games the parent owns without purchasing the library again.
Recommended Free Tools
Add a console passkey to the adult profile as a second barrier:
- Press Xbox and open Profile & system → Settings → Account → Sign-in, security & passkey.
- Choose Change my sign-in & security preferences → Customize.
- Require the passkey to make purchases, and consider requiring it to change settings as well.
- Create the passkey shown by the console; do not use an obvious birthday or another code the child can guess.
The passkey protects the adult profile separately from Ask to Buy. It is not a replacement for putting the child on their own account.
Understand non-Microsoft in-app billing
Microsoft says Family Safety and Xbox Family Settings spending controls do not apply to in-app purchases handled through alternative, non-Microsoft billing platforms. Such charges may not appear in Microsoft spending history, and gift-card credit in the Microsoft account may not fund them. The initial download from the Microsoft Store can still be subject to your Microsoft settings, but a later checkout inside the app may use another company’s billing system.
If a charge is missing from Microsoft order history, investigate whether the app used a non-Microsoft platform and review the payment account used by that service. Apply that service’s own parental controls and require a device or platform purchase password where available.

Microsoft’s rule that purchases above the child’s age limit always require approval applies even when the child has account credit. Set the child’s content and privacy restrictions as well as purchase approval so stored value cannot be used to obtain content outside the permitted ESRB or regional rating band.

What happens when a purchase request arrives?
When Ask to Buy is active and the child lacks funding for a permitted purchase, the organizer receives a request in the Xbox Family Settings app or the configured Family Safety notification channel. Review the title, price, and age suitability before approving. Another organizer’s approval or an organizer-added balance can also generate a notification, so check Spending activity when the balance changes unexpectedly.
Approval is not a universal hold on every transaction: stored-value spending is the documented exception. If you require a prompt for every card-funded purchase, keep the card on the child account only when necessary and enable Require approval for every purchase.
What should I do if a charge already went through?
First identify which Microsoft account and payment source made the purchase. Check the child’s Microsoft/Xbox order history and Family Safety’s Spending activity; if the transaction is absent, check for non-Microsoft in-app billing. Then use Microsoft’s billing and purchase-support flow linked from its Xbox family-purchase help page to investigate the charge and any refund eligibility. Do not assume that an Ask to Buy setting can reverse a completed stored-value purchase.

| Family goal | Recommended configuration | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing should be bought without a parent decision | Child account, zero Microsoft balance, console Ask a parent on, adult profile passkey | The child must request every funded purchase; non-Microsoft billing still needs separate controls |
| Teach budgeting with a fixed allowance | Add only a chosen balance; keep the child’s card off the account; leave Ask to Buy on | The child can spend the entire balance without another approval prompt |
| Allow a card but review every checkout | Child account, card under Child’s payment methods, Require approval for every purchase | More prompts and more account-management overhead |
| Use a retail or digital gift card | Redeem only the amount intended for the child’s balance | Redeemed credit bypasses Ask to Buy and cannot control third-party billing |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child use Xbox gift-card money without asking me?
Yes. Once gift-card credit is redeemed to the child’s Microsoft account, Xbox support says approval is not needed to spend that currency. Treat the redeemed amount as immediately available allowance rather than as locked funds.
Why did an in-game purchase not appear in Microsoft spending history?
The app may have used a non-Microsoft billing platform. Family Safety and Xbox Family Settings do not govern those checkouts, so review the app’s platform account and payment settings separately.
Do Xbox spending controls work if siblings share one profile?
No. Controls are attached to the child’s Microsoft account in the family group. Give each child a separate account; protect the adult organizer profile with a purchase passkey.
Can I set a different monthly Xbox dollar limit for each child?
Microsoft’s current support model documents an account balance rather than a recurring monthly cap. You can add different amounts to each child’s account and replenish them manually, but do not rely on an undocumented monthly-limit field.
