Start with mobility, a simple two-form Aberrant loadout, and a repeatable stun-to-execution loop. CONTROL Resonant is built from large, handcrafted zones rather than one seamless open world. You will make the most progress by learning how Dylan’s melee weapon, supernatural abilities, movement tools, and exploration systems reinforce one another, then choosing upgrades that fit the way you actually play.
Understand the structure before you leave the first zone
Each zone combines a central campaign route with world quests, combat encounters, environmental challenges, hidden discoveries, and optional activities. The map is useful for orientation, but it is not a checklist that must be emptied before you move on. A safer rhythm is to follow the main route until you gain a new tool, then revisit nearby branches that the tool makes interesting.
Remedy describes the zones as large and distinct, with side activities and hidden encounters built into them. That design changes how you should read a locked door, a strange room, or a path that appears to lead nowhere: it may be a later traversal puzzle, an optional fight, or a discovery rather than a missed objective. The intended goal is exploration on your terms, not mechanical map clearing.
Build your first combat habit around momentum
The most useful beginner loop is short and repeatable: enter safely, land melee hits, spend a supernatural ability to create a stun or spacing opportunity, and use the execution window before moving to the next threat. Melee hits restore Combat Ability resources, so attacking is also a way to finance your next control move. Executions temporarily increase melee damage, making a successful sequence feed the next one.

- Choose an approach angle. Sprint, jump, or Evade rather than walking directly into a group. Start from the edge of an encounter whenever possible.
- Use a controlled melee string. Begin with the Aberrant form whose timing you understand. Stop the string if an enemy is about to flank you; finishing an animation is not worth taking a hit.
- Create a stun or gap. Spend an ability that reliably interrupts, stuns, or gives you room. You do not need to use every power in every fight.
- Take the execution window. When an enemy is vulnerable, execute promptly. The temporary melee-damage increase is part of the combat economy, not merely a finishing animation.
- Reposition immediately. After the execution, change your angle or elevation. The next enemy may already be approaching from outside your view.
This loop explains why static cover is only a temporary reset. Remedy’s beginner guidance for the wider Control combat family emphasizes mobility over staying behind cover. Sprinting, jumping, and Evading prevent enemies from surrounding or flanking Dylan; cover is useful while you recover or identify a target, but remaining in one place gives the encounter time to close around you.
When a fight becomes chaotic
Reduce the number of decisions you are making. Equip one primary Aberrant form for dependable damage, one secondary form that addresses its weakness, and one or two abilities that consistently provide stun or spacing. A smaller, familiar kit is usually stronger than a collection of powers you cannot deploy under pressure.
- If enemies reach you too quickly, prioritize movement and an ability that creates distance before adding more damage.
- If you are being attacked from several directions, break line of sight briefly, then re-enter from a different angle instead of defending the same position.
- If your resources seem to run out, add deliberate melee strings between ability uses; the weapon’s resource return is tied to successful melee hits.
- If executions are rare, focus on one reliable stun setup and learn its timing before experimenting with more elaborate combinations.
Use the Aberrant as a two-role toolkit
The Aberrant is Dylan’s transforming melee weapon. Its Primary and Secondary Forms let you adjust range, speed, and combat role, while Combo Enders change how a string concludes. You do not need to specialize immediately. Treat the forms as two answers to different battlefield questions.

Practice each form in low-risk encounters and pay attention to the final hit of a string. A Combo Ender that looks slower may be valuable if it keeps a dangerous target controlled; a faster ender may be better when you need to disengage. The right choice depends on your timing and the zone’s enemy mix, so test before committing to a specialized build.
Choose a build path in the Gap
The Gap is the game’s build-customization space. Progression has three connected pillars: supernatural abilities earned from Resonants, Aberrant weapon forms, and Talents that strengthen the relationship between ability use and melee. Think of them as a loop rather than three unrelated upgrade menus: abilities create openings, melee capitalizes on them, and Talents can make the transition between the two more effective.

A single playthrough will not unlock everything, and some Resonant rewards branch. There is therefore no universal best build to chase. Choose the style you enjoy and accept that another run or another choice may reveal a different combination. The practical beginner test is simple: after an upgrade, can you describe when you will use it in a fight? If not, leave it for later and strengthen the parts of your kit you already understand.

Two useful starting archetypes

Remedy has described setups that include summons such as Mold Turrets, which illustrates the difference between pressure and control. You can use that distinction as a decision tool without treating either approach as mandatory: choose close-range burst if you enjoy constant repositioning, or choose distance and independent damage if you prefer to shape the fight before committing.
Treat Resonants as both bosses and progression gates
Resonants are major bosses. Defeating one grants new supernatural abilities, so these encounters matter to both the story and your build. Before entering a Resonant fight, make sure you know which ability creates your safest opening and which Aberrant form you can use without hesitation.
- Keep enough room to move; a cramped corner removes the advantage of mobility.
- Open with the ability you can land consistently, not the one with the highest theoretical damage.
- Use melee when it is safe so the hit-based resource return can fund another ability.
- After an execution or major attack, change position before the boss can force you into a predictable pattern.
Because some rewards branch, decide what kind of problem you want the next ability to solve. A power that improves spacing may be more valuable than extra pressure if you are repeatedly surrounded; a damage-oriented choice may fit better if you already control distance reliably.

Learn Reach and Shift before tackling gravity areas
Reach and Shift are traversal tools for places where gravity and orientation become unstable. Reach helps Dylan navigate spaces that no longer obey normal physics. Shift redirects momentum through Gravity Anomalies, allowing movement through environments that would otherwise be impossible to read as ordinary floors and walls.
- Pause when the environment rotates or folds. Do not immediately follow the surface that was the floor a moment ago.
- Scan every visible plane. Check walls, ceilings, tilted roofs, ledges, and other surfaces for the next walkable route.
- Look for a valid landing surface. The correct path may be above or beside you rather than directly ahead.
- Use Reach to navigate the altered space. Confirm that the destination is a surface Dylan can actually occupy before committing.
- Use Shift at Gravity Anomalies. Redirect momentum deliberately, then reassess the room’s orientation instead of continuing on instinct.
The key mental adjustment is to stop asking, “Where is the floor?” Ask instead, “Which surface is currently walkable?” That question remains useful after every rotation, fold, or momentum redirection.

Explore zones without turning them into chores
Follow the central campaign long enough to gain new abilities, then branch out when a nearby route becomes readable. World-quest markers and environmental anomalies are worth investigating, but a marker that looks safe to postpone does not need to interrupt an urgent objective. Return when you have a better traversal tool or when your current build needs a practical test.

A low-stress exploration route
- Advance through the main path until the zone teaches a new mechanic or opens a new route.
- Check nearby side paths for hidden encounters, environmental challenges, and optional activities.
- Mark or remember routes that appear impossible because of gravity, orientation, or a missing ability.
- Return after gaining Reach, Shift, or a new Resonant ability and test those routes again.
- Leave unfinished discoveries when the combat or traversal challenge stops being informative; the zone will still be there when your toolkit improves.
This approach preserves the game’s intended rhythm. You are building a mental map of opportunities, not proving that every icon can be removed in one visit.
Fix the most common beginner problems

Platform and patch support
Remedy’s support hub lists CONTROL Resonant support for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its PC resources include help for both Steam and the Epic Games Store, along with current patch resources. If a problem appears platform-specific, identify the edition and storefront first, then consult the matching support and patch information rather than applying advice for a different version.
- On PC, note whether you launch through Steam or the Epic Games Store before troubleshooting.
- On console, record whether you are using PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- Check current patch information before assuming a traversal or combat behavior is intended.
- When contacting support, include the platform, storefront where relevant, and the point in the zone where the issue occurred.
A practical first-session plan
Use the opening session to establish habits rather than chase a perfect build.
- Equip a primary Aberrant form and learn its safe melee range.
- Add a secondary form with a noticeably different range, speed, or timing profile.
- Practice one ability that creates a stun or a gap, then convert that opening into an execution.
- Move after every major exchange; use cover only long enough to reset your angle.
- In the next environmental challenge, deliberately search walls, ceilings, and tilted surfaces before deciding a route is blocked.
- When a Resonant reward offers a branch, select the option that addresses your current difficulty and continue playing instead of waiting for a theoretical final build.
Mastering those habits gives you a foundation for every later form, Talent, Resonant ability, and zone. The game’s systems are designed to reward momentum, curiosity, and adaptation more than a fixed checklist or a single “correct” build.
