“Conflict with Emulation Software Detected” is usually a legacy optical-disc copy-protection warning, most often associated with SecuROM. The game believes a virtual drive, disc image, or disc-emulation component is active. It does not necessarily mean you are running a console emulator, using a pirated copy, or infected with malware.
Unmount virtual discs, disable disc-emulation features, exit the related software, restart Windows, insert the required original game disc, and install the correct official patch. If the warning remains, treat it as a possible false positive or broader legacy-DRM compatibility problem.
What the error actually means
SecuROM is a digital-rights-management system used with CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and electronically distributed software. On disc-check releases, the protected executable authenticates characteristics of the physical disc and the optical-drive environment. If it detects a configuration associated with disc emulation, it may refuse to launch. See SecuROM’s explanation of its protection system.
In this context, “emulation” generally means optical-disc emulation, not a console emulator such as Dolphin, PCSX2, or RPCS3.

- Game emulator: software that imitates another console or computer platform.
- Disc-emulation software: software that creates virtual CD/DVD drives or changes how Windows presents optical media.
- Disc-imaging software: software that creates, mounts, burns, or manages ISO and other disc-image files.
- Copy-protection detection: a check of the disc, drive, drivers, and launch environment that can produce false positives.
Games that can display it
The message is not unique to one title. Reports include The Sims 2 (EA forum), SimCity Societies (Microsoft Q&A), Battlefield 2142 (Microsoft Q&A), and Crysis (AnandTech discussion). Comparable SecuROM or other disc-DRM releases can behave similarly.
The correct remedy depends on the title, expansion, retail or digital edition, region, patch level, Windows version, and whether that release still requires a physical disc.
Quick fix: follow this order
- Unmount every virtual disc. In your imaging application, use its command—often labelled Unmount, Eject image, Detach, Disconnect, or Remove virtual drive—for each mounted image.
- Disable disc-emulation features. Turn off virtual-drive or emulation components, not merely the main window. Then fully exit the application and any tray component.
- Restart Windows. This gives virtual-drive and filter components a chance to unload before the next launch attempt. Bethesda recommends restarting after disabling emulation software (support guidance).
- Insert the correct original disc. For a disc-check release, put the original game or expansion “play” or launch disc in a local physical CD/DVD drive. A backup disc or mounted image may not pass authentication (SecuROM disc-check guidance).
- Install the latest official patch for that release. Match the exact game, region where applicable, expansion, distribution edition, and existing patch level. SecuROM recommends the relevant official patch when emulation detection persists (official procedure).
- Launch the game again. If it still fails, continue with the title-specific checks below rather than downloading a replacement executable.
Programs that may trigger the warning
Bethesda lists Alcohol 120%, CloneCD, and Nero as historical examples of software that may conflict with protected games. This is not a permanent or universal blacklist: detection varies by title, version, drivers, and enabled features. Other disc-burning or imaging programs, leftover virtual drives, and filter components can have the same effect.

If you do not have an emulator installed
“I never installed an emulator” does not prove that no conflicting component is active. Check for a mounted image, a virtual optical drive left by previously removed software, background services from burning or imaging tools, and a recent game or Windows update. SecuROM also acknowledges that detection can be incorrect (FAQ).

- Wrong Volume: the wrong disc may be inserted, the correct disc may be in another drive, or emulation may be interfering.
- No Disc or authentication failure: the release may require its original disc in the expected physical drive.
- Emulation conflict: the drive environment may be detected as virtual or altered.
Use the exact message and game edition when consulting the publisher’s support article; Bethesda groups several of these cases in its troubleshooting guidance, while SecuROM documents disc-check cases separately at its disc-check FAQ.
When there is no optical drive
A USB CD/DVD drive may work for some titles, but compatibility is not universal. Older DRM may reject particular USB drives, the game may require a title-specific patch, or a digital edition may use different authentication. Check the publisher’s requirements, seek an official patch or supported digital release, and prefer a legitimate modern re-release when one exists. Do not assume that any ISO mounted in Windows will satisfy a disc-check release.

- Accept the disclaimer.
- Find the generated
AnalysisLog.sr0file in the root ofC:. - Zip the file and send it with a detailed description to SecuROM support, following the current instructions at the official analysis page.
The diagnostic utility can search common installation locations automatically, but a manual selection may be required for games installed elsewhere (diagnostic search instructions). Obtain the tool only from the official site, and avoid posting diagnostic files publicly if they contain information you do not want to disclose.

If every emulation feature is disabled and the original disc is present, the failure may involve an old driver, damaged media, a physical-drive compatibility issue, a false positive, or DRM that the current Windows release no longer supports reliably. The available SecuROM-era instructions do not establish one Windows 10 or Windows 11 rule for every game.
Escalate in this order:
- Check the game publisher’s support page and official patch archive.
- Provide the title, edition, expansion, region, Windows version, exact message, and steps already tried to title-specific support.
- Use the SecuROM diagnostic procedure.
- Look for a publisher-supported digital edition or legitimate re-release.
- Use a separate legacy-Windows environment only if you understand its security and maintenance risks.
Do not routinely disable antivirus, Secure Boot, driver signing, or other core Windows protections to make an old game launch.

Avoid unsafe “fixes”
- Do not download random “no-CD” executables, cracks, or replacement DLLs. They can introduce malware, violate copyright or license terms, and prevent official support.
- Do not use registry cleaners or delete optical-drive drivers without title-specific instructions and a recovery plan.
- Do not assume detection proves piracy; legitimate owners have reported it on retail and digital installations.
- Do not assume uninstalling a disc tool is always necessary. SecuROM says manual disabling may be sufficient (SecuROM FAQ).
SecuROM’s old “No disc inserted” page includes dla disable e: for disabling DLA on a particular drive. That is a legacy, driver- and title-specific instruction—not a general Windows command. Try the imaging application’s own unmount and disable controls first (legacy DLA page).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this message mean I have a virus?
No. It is normally a copy-protection detection message. Malware is not established merely because the warning appears.
Does it prove the game thinks I pirated it?
No. False positives and conflicts affect legitimate installations, including retail and digital releases.
Will removing the software delete my saves?
Uninstalling a disc-imaging tool normally targets that tool, not the game’s save folder, but save locations vary by title. Back up saves before major changes.
Can I use a USB DVD drive?
Possibly, but compatibility is title- and drive-specific. Check the publisher’s requirements rather than assuming it will satisfy legacy DRM.
What if the game is from EA, Bethesda, or another publisher?
Use the publisher’s support page for the exact title and edition. The same message can require different patches or discs in different releases.
