For unavoidable food scraps, composting is generally the better choice when you have a suitable home setup or an accepted local collection program. It diverts organics from landfill disposal and can return nutrients and carbon to soil. Preventing food waste is better still; composting is for what remains.

What changes when food scraps go in the trash?

In a landfill, food and other organics decompose under anaerobic conditions and generate methane. Food made up 24.1% of U.S. municipal solid waste sent to landfills, according to the EPA’s figures based on 2018 data. The EPA also reports that wasted food was responsible for 58% of U.S. landfill methane emissions; that is a national landfill estimate, not a prediction for any one household.

For scale, the EPA reports that U.S. food retail, food service, and residential sectors generated 66.2 million tons of wasted food in 2019, and only 5% was composted. Municipal solid waste landfills accounted for approximately 14% of U.S. methane emissions in 2022, according to the EPA. These figures describe national conditions, not the impact of a particular bin or home.

The EPA’s composting overview explains the landfill context and the role of composting in recovering organic material.

Which option fits your household?

Option Best fit Tradeoffs
Backyard pile or enclosed compost bin You have outdoor space, suitable scraps, and a use for finished compost. Needs upkeep: balance browns and greens, manage moisture and airflow, and check your system’s accepted materials. Home systems generally handle food scraps other than meat, bones, and dairy; follow the instructions for your specific setup.
Vermicomposting You want a home composting method that does not depend on a conventional outdoor pile. Still requires a suitable setup and care. Consult the system’s instructions for accepted scraps.
Municipal or community collection You lack space for a home system or prefer a collection or drop-off service. Availability, accepted materials, and collection rules vary by locality. Check the program’s current rules.
Trash No suitable home or local compost route is available, or the scraps are not accepted by the available systems. It is a disposal route rather than a way to recover nutrients for soil; landfilled organics can generate methane.

The EPA outlines home, municipal, and community approaches; local service availability determines which collection options you can actually use.

How to choose a food-scrap route

  1. Prevent what you can. Use, store, or share edible food where possible. Composting is for scraps that cannot reasonably be avoided.
  2. Check local collection first. Search your city or county’s waste-service information for curbside organics collection or a community drop-off site, then verify which scraps it accepts.
  3. Assess a home setup. If you have appropriate space and are willing to maintain a pile or bin, check what it can process and whether you can use the finished compost. Vermicomposting is another home method, with its own setup and care requirements.
  4. Use trash for what has no accepted route. If the material is excluded from both your home system and local collection, follow local disposal rules rather than assuming it belongs in compost.

For a countertop pail, think of it as temporary collection and transfer—not as the composting system itself. Some food-scrap appliances dry or process scraps without making finished compost; the EPA notes that the resulting dried mixture may need to be added to a composting system.

What a home compost pile needs

The EPA suggests using two to three parts carbon-rich “browns” for each part nitrogen-rich “greens.” Moisture and oxygen flow also matter. Monitor the pile’s moisture, odor, and temperature, and adjust it as needed; composting is a managed process, not simply storing all scraps together.

  • Browns: Carbon-rich materials that help balance nitrogen-rich scraps.
  • Greens: Nitrogen-rich materials, including many food scraps.
  • Moisture and airflow: Conditions the pile needs for decomposition; follow the guidance for your system.

Do not assume a home pile and a commercial collection facility accept the same things. EPA guidance says home systems mostly handle food scraps other than meat, bones, and dairy, while facility feedstocks vary. Check your system or collection program’s instructions before adding uncertain materials. The EPA’s home composting guide covers methods, materials, maintenance, and local alternatives.

What finished compost adds

When a composting process is complete, the result can be used as a soil amendment, returning organic matter and nutrients to soil. This benefit depends on having a system that accepts the scraps and properly processes them; a collection pail or dried-scrap appliance output is not automatically finished compost. The EPA describes the benefits of using finished compost.
