Haskell and Ruby can both express high-level ideas, but they start from different assumptions. Haskell emphasizes pure functions, static polymorphic types, and non-strict evaluation; Ruby emphasizes objects, dynamically resolved methods, and runtime flexibility. Which one fits better depends on what you want to build and what you want to learn—not on a universal ranking.
Haskell and Ruby at a glance
| Axis | Haskell | Ruby | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type checking | Statically and polymorphically typed in the Haskell 2010 description. Haskell 2010 Language Report | Dynamically typed; whether a method call works is checked at runtime. Ruby guide for programmers coming from C and C++ | Haskell can catch certain type mismatches before execution, while Ruby allows code to proceed until a problematic operation is reached. Neither approach rules out every bug. |
| Default design model | Purely functional, with non-strict semantics, algebraic data types, and pattern matching. Haskell 2010 Language Report | Object-oriented, with objects throughout, blocks, and iterators. Official Ruby FAQ | Haskell encourages describing transformations as functions; Ruby commonly organizes behavior around objects and method calls. |
| Effects and state | I/O is represented using monadic operations in the language report. Pure functional design does not mean a program cannot interact with the outside world. Haskell 2010 Language Report | Ruby supports object state and dynamically dispatched methods. Official Ruby FAQ | The languages make different choices about how effects and state appear in code; neither is limited to computation without practical side effects. |
How their programming models differ
Haskell: functions and types make structure explicit
The Haskell 2010 Language Report describes Haskell as “a general purpose, purely functional programming language incorporating many recent innovations in programming language design.” In that model, functions are central, and types describe the kinds of values and operations that fit together. Algebraic data types and pattern matching provide ways to define and handle structured data.
Haskell’s report also describes non-strict semantics: evaluation need not compute every expression immediately. That is a language-design property, not a promise that every program will be faster or more efficient. The report specifies Haskell 2010; the GHC compiler commonly offers extensions beyond that specification, so a particular Haskell project may use features not covered by the report.
Ruby: objects and method calls are central
The official Ruby FAQ says, “Like Smalltalk, everything in Ruby is an object, and Ruby has blocks, iterators, meta-classes and other good stuff.” Ruby’s object-oriented model lets code organize behavior as methods on objects, while blocks and iterators support concise ways to work with collections and repeated operations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ruby also resolves method calls dynamically. As the official Ruby FAQ puts it, “Ruby binds all messages to methods dynamically.” This runtime flexibility can make it possible to work without declaring static types for variables, but a call that cannot be handled may fail when the program reaches it.
What the differences mean when writing code
Consider a simple transformation such as selecting values from a collection and converting them. Both languages can express this kind of higher-level operation. The distinction is less about whether a technique is possible and more about the conventions the language foregrounds: Haskell leads with typed functions and transformations, while Ruby leads with objects, methods, and blocks. Ruby can use functional techniques, and Haskell programs can perform I/O and other effects.

- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- When reading Haskell: expect types and function definitions to communicate structure, and look for pattern matching when code handles different cases of a data type.
- When reading Ruby: expect method calls to be resolved at runtime and look for objects, blocks, and iterators to understand how behavior is composed.
- When debugging: static typing may expose some mismatches before execution; dynamic typing can defer those checks until the relevant code runs. Both still require tests and careful reasoning.
Is Haskell or Ruby easier to learn?
There is no established universal answer. The cited language descriptions explain how each language works; they do not compare learning outcomes. Someone already comfortable with object-oriented programming may find Ruby’s familiar structure approachable. Someone keen to learn functional programming, type systems, and pattern matching may find Haskell a useful challenge. Those are starting-point considerations, not guarantees about difficulty.

Which language should you use for a project?
The language descriptions alone cannot establish which language is the better choice for a particular product. Before deciding, compare the actual project and team rather than relying on a blanket claim about speed, productivity, or suitability.
- What are the project’s requirements and constraints?
- Which libraries and dependencies does it need?
- How will the application be deployed and maintained?
- Which language can the team work in effectively, or which skills does the team want to build?
If the choice is primarily about learning, choose the language whose core ideas you want to explore. If it is for a real project, evaluate the relevant dependencies, deployment context, maintenance needs, and team experience; the language paradigms by themselves do not settle that decision.
