For a dashboard that needs a particular exchange’s bid, ask, last trade, order book, or live feed, use that exchange’s API. The key distinction is what “price” means: an aggregated market view or a quote for a named venue and trading pair.
CoinGecko and exchange APIs answer different questions
CoinGecko aggregates prices across supported centralized and decentralized exchanges. Its market endpoint can return price, market capitalization, volume, circulating supply, highs and lows, and price changes, with filtering and pagination. An exchange API reports data for that exchange and its listed pairs; it does not automatically provide a market-wide consensus price.
For example, Kraken’s public ticker data is pair-based and can include bid, ask, last trade, volume, average price, trade count, high, low, and open. Coinbase offers REST market data and WebSocket feeds for live prices and order-book updates. Those are more directly useful when the dashboard represents trading conditions on a particular venue.
Compare the options by what the dashboard must show
| Decision | CoinGecko | Exchange APIs |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning of price | Aggregated view across supported sources | Price for a specific exchange and trading pair |
| Asset coverage | Broad asset listings and market-cap/ranking fields through its market endpoint | Assets and pairs listed by that exchange |
| Useful data | Market cap, volume, supply, rankings, price changes, and history depending on endpoint and plan | Pair ticker, bid/ask, last trade, order book, venue trades, and streaming depending on provider |
| Free-use limits | Demo plan lists 10,000 calls per month and 100 calls per minute, according to CoinGecko’s pricing page accessed 2026-10-04 | Limits and access rules vary by exchange and endpoint; consult the provider’s current documentation |
| Freshness | Endpoint and plan dependent; CoinGecko describes typical caching around one to five minutes | Endpoint and stream dependent; venue-native data may suit venue-specific live views |
| Integration work | One API can cover broad markets, but credits, freshness, and licensing still need attention | For multiple venues, expect to normalize symbols, pairs, response formats, and limits |
| Best fit | Portfolio overview, top coins, comparison charts, or a broad asset list | Trading monitor, execution context, order-book display, or pair-level dashboard |
The integration-work distinction follows from the providers’ different scopes and endpoint structures; it is not a comparative integration test.

What CoinGecko’s free plan means in practice
CoinGecko’s pricing page, accessed 2026-10-04, lists its Demo API at 10,000 calls per month and 100 calls per minute. Its pricing FAQ says, “1 call = 1 credit. Calling any endpoint will only count as 1 call.” These are vendor-published limits and may change, so verify the current plan before building around them. CoinGecko lists its Basic plan at $35 per month when billed yearly; consider a paid tier only if the free quota or plan features are insufficient.
A request limit is not a promise that the underlying data refreshes at the same rate. CoinGecko says endpoint caching is generally around one to five minutes, with refresh speed varying by endpoint and plan. Choose a refresh schedule based on the specific data your dashboard needs, rather than assuming that a 100-call-per-minute allowance provides minute-by-minute updates.
When an exchange API is the better choice
Show a venue’s actual market context
If users need the bid and ask, latest trade, or order book for a particular exchange pair, a venue’s own market endpoints are the appropriate source. Label each value with both the exchange and pair—for example, “Exchange / BTC-USD”—so users do not mistake it for an aggregated market price.
Stream updates for a pair
For live price or order-book updates, use a provider’s streaming interface when available. Coinbase documents WebSocket feeds for live prices and order-book data. Streaming is useful for a venue-specific display, but it does not make that venue’s price representative of the entire market.

Plan for rate limits and delays
Exchange APIs have their own limits and response behavior. Binance assigns request weights to endpoints, applies limits by IP, and advises clients to back off after HTTP 429 responses; repeated violations can lead to an IP ban. Binance also notes that asynchronous responses can have expected delays. Its documentation directs clients using public market-data-only APIs to the base endpoint https://data-api.binance.vision. Check the relevant endpoint’s current rules before relying on a refresh cadence.
Choose a provider and build the dashboard
- Define the price. Decide whether the display needs an aggregated market price or a quote for a named exchange and pair.
- Start with one provider and only the required fields. For broad coverage, CoinGecko’s
/coins/marketsendpoint supports market price, capitalization, volume, supply, and price-change data, as well as filtering and pagination. - Set refreshes to match data freshness. Account for the chosen endpoint’s caching or expected response delays; a request quota does not establish the data’s update interval.
- Handle throttling explicitly. Respect endpoint weights and limits, and back off after HTTP 429 responses when using Binance.
- Check usage rights before public or commercial launch. CoinGecko ties permitted use to the selected plan and requires attribution. Its standard commercial plans restrict redistribution of API access or data; redistribution or white-label use may require custom licensing. Confirm current terms for the exact use case.
- Use venue endpoints or a WebSocket for exchange-specific detail. Clearly identify the exchange and pair beside the displayed values.
Do not treat either source as an accuracy guarantee
CoinGecko describes its prices as aggregated, while exchange APIs expose venue-specific data. Those different scopes do not establish that one source is objectively more accurate. No independent market-wide performance benchmark or controlled comparative accuracy result is established here. Choose the data source that matches the question your dashboard answers, and make its scope visible to users.
