It was not Azure-only: Cohere said its hosted API was available immediately as well. The model was pitched for enterprise retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool use and multilingual workflows.
What is Cohere Command R+?
Command R+ is an enterprise-focused large language model Cohere designed for complex retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), multi-step tool use and multilingual applications. In its April 4, 2024 launch announcement, Cohere described it as purpose-built for real-world enterprise use cases. Those are the company’s stated goals, not independent findings about model quality.
Cohere said the model had a 128,000-token context window and supported ten key languages at launch. The language figure is Cohere’s coverage claim; it does not establish equivalent quality across languages. Its current documentation lists a maximum output of 4,000 tokens for Command R+.
Was Command R+ available on Azure first?
Yes, in the sense that Azure was the first cloud-provider rollout Cohere announced. It did not mean Azure was the only way to use the model: the launch post said Cohere’s hosted API was available immediately, too. The same post said OCI and other cloud platforms were expected to follow.

#1 Best Overall
Microsoft announced in April 2024 that Command R+ was entering the Azure AI catalog through Models as a Service. AWS Bedrock later listed Command R+ with an August 2024 launch date. These announcements establish additional access routes, but not a complete current list of regions, quotas, account prerequisites or deployment terms. Check the relevant platform’s live listing before planning a deployment.
What does Command R+ cost?
The price depends on the model version and the date of the rate. Cohere’s launch announcement listed different rates from its current documentation for the documented API model, so the figures should not be treated as one timeless price.
Rank #2
| Price basis | Rate | Version and date |
|---|---|---|
| Input tokens | $3 per million | Cohere launch-page API pricing, April 2024 |
| Output tokens | $15 per million | Cohere launch-page API pricing, April 2024 |
| Input tokens | $2.50 per million | Cohere documentation for command-r-plus-08-2024, accessed in 2026 |
| Output tokens | $10 per million | Cohere documentation for command-r-plus-08-2024, accessed in 2026 |
The current figures are from Cohere’s model documentation. Cloud-provider pricing may have separate terms; the figures above are Cohere API rates, not a comparison of provider charges.
How does Command R+ compare with Command A?
Cohere’s current model-selection guidance recommends Command A for most use cases, while positioning Command R+ for complex RAG and multi-step tool-use workflows. That is a distinction in Cohere’s guidance, not an independent comparative benchmark. Choose based on the workload and verify the available version, limits and price on the access route you intend to use.
What the launch claims do—and do not—establish
The launch materials document Cohere’s intended use cases, stated context and language coverage, and initial API rates. They do not independently validate performance or show that Command R+ outperforms other models. Cohere’s comparisons and capability language should therefore be read as vendor claims, rather than neutral benchmark results.
