Yes. The Linux Foundation offers training and certification paths for Kubernetes and other cloud-native technologies, but you generally do not have to buy a particular course to sit an exam. Choose a credential for the work you want to do, then prepare with a mix of courses, documentation, and practical exercises. That distinction matters most for the hands-on administrator and developer exams.
Which cloud-native credential fits your role?
The Linux Foundation catalog includes Kubernetes credentials as well as certifications tied to other cloud-native projects. The best starting point depends on whether you need broad introductory knowledge, platform administration, application development, or security skills. The current catalog is the place to confirm the latest credentials and offerings.
| Credential or path | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| KCNA | Foundational Kubernetes and cloud-native ecosystem knowledge | Positioned as an entry-level associate credential in the Linux Foundation’s learning paths. |
| CKA | Kubernetes administrators | Focuses on operating and troubleshooting Kubernetes clusters. The CNCF exam page describes a two-hour, performance-based command-line assessment. |
| CKAD | Developers building and deploying cloud-native applications | The exam is a two-hour, online, proctored performance test completed from a Kubernetes command line; the current page says there are no prerequisites. |
| CKS | Professionals securing Kubernetes platforms and container-based applications | The Linux Foundation’s sample path identifies CKA as a prerequisite credential. Verify the current eligibility rules before enrolling. |
| KCSA and project-specific credentials | Cloud-native security fundamentals or expertise in a particular project | The catalog also lists credentials associated with projects such as Argo, Istio, Prometheus, Cilium, and GitOps. Check each credential’s current scope and exam format. |
KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD, and CKS are not interchangeable labels for one certification. In particular, an exam for a specific project may have a narrower scope than a Kubernetes administrator or developer credential.
What do the exams test?
CKA: operating and troubleshooting clusters
The CNCF publishes the CKA exam’s domain weights as Cluster Architecture, Installation & Configuration (25%); Workloads & Scheduling (15%); Services & Networking (20%); Storage (10%); and Troubleshooting (30%). These are exam-composition figures, not a general measure of how important each skill is at work. Review the current CKA page for the latest exam scope, format, price, and retake terms; these details can change.
#1 Best Overall
CKAD: solving application tasks at the command line
The Linux Foundation describes CKAD as an online, proctored, performance-based exam: candidates solve tasks using a Kubernetes command line, with two hours to complete them. The page currently says enrollment includes two Killer.sh simulator attempts, each providing 36 hours of access after activation. Treat simulator access as an included practice resource, not a substitute for learning how to perform the tasks. See the CKAD exam page for current terms.
Other credentials: check the exam page before choosing a study format
Do not assume every associate or project credential uses the same assessment style as CKA or CKAD. Confirm the specific credential’s current format and tested domains on its official page before deciding whether your preparation should emphasize conceptual study, hands-on labs, or both.

Are Linux Foundation courses required?
Usually, no: a suggested learning path is not automatically an exam prerequisite. The CKAD sample curriculum explicitly says its recommended courses are not required prerequisites. The CKS sample path likewise describes a suggested sequence, while identifying CKA as the prerequisite credential. For eligibility, rely on the live exam page rather than assuming that every course listed in a curriculum is mandatory.
Official paths and the catalog show several ways to prepare: introductory courses, self-paced or instructor-led training, standalone exams, and course-and-exam bundles. The Linux Foundation’s learning-path page presents its routes as exam preparation, not as a rule that all learners must purchase a specific course.
How to prepare for CKA, CKAD, or CKS
CKA preparation
The Linux Foundation candidate FAQ describes Fundamentals of Kubernetes (LFS258) as preparation for CKA. Pair structured instruction with repeated cluster administration and troubleshooting practice, because the CKA assessment is performance-based rather than a reading-only test. Confirm course availability and the current exam domains before you build a study schedule.
CKAD preparation
The CKAD sample path recommends beginning with free introductory courses, then moving to intermediate training. It lists Kubernetes for Developers (LFD259) or Kubernetes Administration (LFD459) as optional further study before the exam. The sample estimate is three to six months depending on experience, study, and practice; it is a planning reference, not a guaranteed timeline. The path also expressly says its courses are not required prerequisites. See the CKAD sample curriculum.
Rank #4
CKS preparation
The sample CKS path starts with two free introductory courses, then the CKA prerequisite, and suggests Kubernetes Security Essentials (LFS260) or instructor-led Kubernetes Security Fundamentals (LFS460) before CKS. Its estimate is three to six months depending on experience, but the document dates from 2023, so confirm both course availability and current CKS eligibility before following that exact sequence. The courses in the sample path are not required prerequisites. See the CKS sample curriculum.
Build a practice plan around the exam, not just the course list
- Confirm eligibility and scope. Open the current exam page for your credential and check prerequisites, domains, format, and exam environment details.
- Choose instruction to fill knowledge gaps. Use a free introductory course or a paid course if you need structured explanations; do not treat an optional course as compulsory.
- Practice the assessment’s actual work. For CKA and CKAD, work directly in a terminal and Kubernetes environment, and practice completing tasks under time pressure.
- Recheck logistics before booking. Exam versions, included simulator access, prices, retake policies, and bundle contents can change; verify them on the official page at enrollment.
What does training and certification cost?
The catalog contains free introductory material alongside paid courses, standalone exams, subscriptions, and bundles. Prices and bundle contents may vary by date, region, language, or promotion. As a dated catalog snapshot, the CNCF CKA page listed a $445 exam and one free retake; that is not a price guarantee. Check the live Linux Foundation catalog and CNCF CKA page before paying.

The Linux Foundation also announced in November 2023 that select courses and certifications were available through AWS Marketplace, initially including CKA with Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258) and CKAD with Kubernetes for Developers (LFD259). Marketplace is a distribution option, not evidence that every current course or credential is available there. See the announcement and confirm current availability with the marketplace.
Can a book help you prepare?
A physical book such as Kubernetes: Preparing for the CKA and CKAD Certifications may be useful as supplementary reading, but the available community-forum reference does not establish its current edition, listing availability, or official endorsement by the Linux Foundation or CNCF. It also cannot replace practice for command-line performance exams. Confirm that any edition you find matches the current exam scope before relying on it.
