Android Auto does not have a Google-mandated list of three apps that every driver should remove. The useful cleanup is personal: hide one navigation app you never use, one media app you never use, and one communication app you do not want displayed while driving. Keep the services you actually rely on, then put them in the order that makes sense for your trips.
Android Auto lets you do this from the Android Auto settings on your phone. Hiding an app changes its launcher visibility; it is not the same as uninstalling the app from your phone.
What “remove” means in Android Auto
The Android Auto launcher is the in-car app list. It provides access to compatible navigation, media, communication and other apps, alongside a dashboard icon and a recent-app area. Google’s developer documentation says users can customize this launcher by changing app order and hiding apps.

A hidden app can remain installed and available on the phone, in another launcher, or through the phone’s normal app list. The practical result is a shorter, easier-to-scan car screen.

There is no published Google statistic showing that hiding a specific number of apps makes Android Auto faster, uses less battery or measurably improves safety. The defensible benefit is usability: fewer irrelevant choices and a predictable position for the apps you do use. Less visual searching may also support a less distracting routine, but that is a reasoned expectation rather than a measured Android Auto result.
The three app categories worth hiding
Choose by function and habit, not by a universal brand list. An app belongs on this list only when it is compatible with Android Auto and you routinely choose another option.

1. Hide an unused duplicate navigation app
Android Auto treats navigation as a launcher category, so installing several map services can produce a longer list than you need. If you always use one service, hiding a second compatible map removes a choice you are unlikely to make. Do not hide every navigation app: retain at least the one you use for routes, searches and voice guidance.

Consider occasional needs before hiding. A second map may be useful for a different country, offline coverage, specialized trails or a work account. If you use it only in those situations, leave it visible or hide it temporarily and restore it before a trip that requires it.

2. Hide an unused duplicate media app
Media support can include music, podcasts, radio and other audio players. Recent Android Auto coverage has named services such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Gaana, PocketFM and TuneIn, but the compatible list and interface can change by Android Auto release, phone and region. Treat those names as examples, not a guaranteed list for every vehicle.
Keep the player that contains the audio you actually use. Hide dormant alternatives, trial apps you no longer open, or duplicate players that came with a phone or subscription. If you switch services by trip, keep both visible and reorder them instead of hiding one; the goal is to remove dead choices, not to make your occasional workflow harder.
3. Hide an unused communication app
Communication apps are part of Android Auto’s launcher and recent-app experience. A driver who never uses a particular compatible messenger may prefer not to see it among driving controls. Hide that unused service while retaining the one needed for hands-free messages and calls.

A work or family messaging service that is quiet most days may still be the one you need in an emergency. Android Auto’s voice and notification behavior also depends on app compatibility and phone permissions, so hiding an app should not be used as a substitute for configuring notifications or driving-mode settings.

How to hide and reorder apps
The controls live on the phone, not on the car’s touchscreen. Labels differ slightly among Android versions and phone makers. If the exact wording below is not present, search the phone’s Settings app for Android Auto.
- Unlock the Android phone that you connect to the vehicle.
- Open Settings and open Android Auto. On some phones, Android Auto appears under connected-device or connection settings; using the Settings search field is the quickest fallback.
- Open the launcher-customization control. It may be labeled Customize launcher, Customize app launcher or similar.
- Review the compatible apps shown in the list. Identify one unused navigation app, one unused media app and one unused communication app, if those duplicates exist on your phone.
- Turn off, uncheck or otherwise hide each app you do not want displayed. The control changes launcher visibility; it does not uninstall the phone app.
- Drag the remaining apps into the order you want. Put the navigation, media and communication tools you reach for most near the top.
- Reconnect the phone to the car, or restart the Android Auto session, and verify the launcher. Some changes appear only after the next connection.
Do not assume that an app listed on the phone will appear in the car. It must be compatible with Android Auto, and compatibility can vary by app release, Android Auto release and region.
A practical way to choose what stays visible
When two apps perform the same job, score them against the conditions that matter in your car rather than choosing by download count or popularity.

- Primary use: classify the app as navigation, media or communication and decide whether that function is part of your normal drive.
- Frequency: keep the app you open weekly or on most trips; hide one used only for a rare situation unless that situation is important.
- Hands-free behavior: retain the service that supports the voice commands, message handling or call workflow you can use without touching the phone.
- Duplicate functionality: when two apps provide the same maps, audio or messaging role, hide the one that adds no everyday value.
- Regional and device compatibility: verify that the app works in your country, Android version and vehicle before making it your only visible option.
A simple rule is to keep one primary app per function, plus an exception for a genuine backup. For example, a driver might keep one map, one music player and one messenger visible, while leaving a second map available on the phone for travel abroad.

Why an app can be missing even when you did not hide it
A missing launcher entry is not proof that Android Auto removed the app. First reopen the launcher-customization screen and check whether the app is disabled there. If it is enabled but still absent, confirm that the app is installed, updated and compatible with Android Auto.
Samsung phones and unused-app auto-disable
Google notes that Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps that have not been used for a while. This battery-saving behavior can make an expected app disappear from Android Auto. Open the app on the phone to reactivate it, or turn off the phone’s automatic unused-app disabling setting if you need the app available regularly. The exact setting name and location can change with Samsung’s Android version, so use Settings search for “unused apps” or “auto disable.”
Other checks before reconnecting
- Make sure the phone is the same account and device you normally connect to the car.
- Open the app once on the phone, then reconnect Android Auto.
- Check that Android Auto and the app are updated through the phone’s app-update mechanism.
- Review notification, microphone and phone permissions required for the app’s Android Auto features.
- Reconnect by USB or wireless projection after changing the launcher list; a currently running session may still show the old arrangement.
If the app remains unavailable after those checks, it may not support Android Auto in your region or current release. Media-player support and launcher behavior are not fixed permanently; updates can add, remove or rearrange compatible features.
What cleanup can and cannot improve
What it can improve
- A shorter launcher list makes unused choices less prominent.
- Reordering puts your normal map, audio player and communication app where you expect them.
- Removing duplicate entries can make a new or borrowed vehicle easier to set up consistently.
What it cannot guarantee
- Hiding apps does not guarantee faster startup, lower battery use or better wireless reliability.
- It does not make an incompatible app work with Android Auto.
- It does not replace safe driving practices, voice controls or the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.
- It does not permanently prevent an app from appearing if a phone or Android Auto update changes compatibility or settings.
Because Google has not published a universal “three apps to remove” list or a measured performance gain, avoid treating this cleanup as a technical speed tweak. It is a launcher-organization step.

When to hide, when to reorder and when to leave an app alone

Keeping the launcher useful after Android Auto updates
Review the launcher after a major Android, Android Auto or media-app update. A new compatible app may be added, an old integration may change, or an app you hid may be re-enabled by a reset. Recheck the order before a long drive, especially after changing phones or connecting a different vehicle.
Use the car’s dashboard and recent-app area as a quick sanity check. Android Auto may show recently used navigation, media and communication apps in addition to the arranged launcher entries. Recent use can therefore affect what appears in that area even when your preferred order remains unchanged.
Finally, make the cleanup match the driver who will use the vehicle. A shared car may need two navigation or media services visible, while a personal car can usually stay simpler. The right three to hide are the unused duplicates on that particular phone, not a fixed trio that Google requires every driver to remove.
