Claude can retrieve and summarize information from connected Gmail and Google Calendar, and it can read text from Google Docs added through Drive. The documented Gmail and Calendar integrations are read-only: they do not send or edit email or create or change calendar events. Drive integration is limited to Google Docs, not every file in Drive.

Anthropic describes Gmail and Calendar access as question-driven: Claude accesses those sources when explicitly asked something that needs them, retrieves the minimum information needed, and follows the permissions of the connected account. What you can ask Claude to do
Search and synthesize email and calendar information
Ask a specific question that names the source and the information you need. For example: “Search Gmail for the latest vendor quote and compare it with the date of our next calendar review.” Claude can use relevant messages and calendar context to produce an answer; check its response and source references before acting on it. Anthropic recommends naming the source and breaking multi-step work into smaller requests.
Read a Google Doc
Add a Doc to a conversation by selecting a recent document or pasting its URL. You can also add Docs to private project knowledge. Claude can then use the document’s text as context. Anthropic says these Docs sync from Drive so the integration can use the latest version. Use the Google Drive integration guide for the documented workflow and limitations.

Use Workspace sources with Research
Anthropic says Research can draw on connected Gmail, Calendar, and Google Docs alongside the web. This is distinct from ordinary access to every file in Drive: the documented Drive connection supports Docs, and availability for Research varies. Anthropic’s Research and Google Workspace guide describes the Workspace sources it can use.
Can Claude send email or change your calendar?
No—not through the documented Gmail and Google Calendar integrations. Anthropic states that these integrations do not support creating or modifying emails or calendar events. A request such as “send this email” or “move my meeting” should not be treated as an action Claude can complete through these integrations. General documentation about connected tools and actions does not override the specific Gmail and Calendar limits.

Google Docs limitations
- Supported file type: Google Docs only. The documented Drive integration does not support Google Sheets or Slides.
- Maximum size: 10 MB per Doc.
- Text only: Claude cannot interpret images in synced Docs, or see comments and suggestions.
- Access: Claude can use only Docs the connected user is permitted to view.
- Project knowledge: Docs added to project knowledge are limited to private projects.
If you lose access to a Doc, Anthropic says its preview is removed, but the chat history remains. The feature details and file limit are described in Anthropic’s Drive integration documentation.
Permissions, privacy, and organization setup
Permissions and data handling
Claude reflects the permissions already granted to the connected Google account. Anthropic says Gmail and Calendar data is retrieved only when a question calls for it, and only the minimum information needed is accessed. The company also says retrieved Gmail and Calendar data is stored on its servers with the associated chat, is removed when that chat is deleted, and is not used to train its models. These are Anthropic’s stated practices; review its current policy and account controls for your circumstances. Details appear in the Gmail and Calendar guide.

Claude for Work administration
For organization accounts, Anthropic says an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the Gmail and Calendar integrations at the account level before Claude for Work users can authenticate. Drive use is described as available to paid Claude users, with Docs in project knowledge limited to private projects. Plan and administrative availability can differ across features, so check your account’s integrations settings and workspace administrator controls.
Availability and beta status
Anthropic labels the Claude.ai Gmail/Calendar and Drive integrations as beta in the cited Help Center guides; beta status and product access can change. A separate Research help article describes the Research beta as available to paid users in the United States, Japan, and Brazil. That regional statement applies to the availability described on that page, not necessarily every Workspace integration or current account. Check the Research availability guide and your account before relying on access.

How to choose the right source
- Use Gmail to find or summarize email information.
- Use Calendar to answer questions that depend on your schedule or commitments.
- Use Google Docs when the relevant material is in document text; add the Doc to a chat or private project.
- Use Research when a task benefits from combining connected Workspace information with web sources, if it is available on your plan and in your region.
For all four, treat Claude as an information-finding and synthesis tool under these documented integrations—not as a way to send messages, change events, or access unsupported Drive file types.
