Anthropic announced general availability for Claude for Government on September 30, 2026, after a public beta that began in July. The desktop service is intended for U.S. government customers and is described by Anthropic as operating in a FedRAMP High-authorized environment. General availability does not mean every agency can use it for every data type: security teams still need to confirm the relevant authorization package, configuration, and mission requirements.

What changed when Claude for Government left beta?

Anthropic’s September 30 announcement said, “Today, Claude for Government is generally available for federal and state agencies.” The product follows a public beta that began in July 2026. The July 7 beta announcement introduced Claude Code and Claude Cowork in Claude for Government Desktop; the September launch describes a generally available desktop offering with agency administration and access to Claude capabilities.

Anthropic says the desktop application can work with files and use skills, plugins, and projects for work such as drafting memos, reviewing requests for proposals, and supporting casework. It positions Claude Code for building and modernizing software systems. These are vendor-described uses, not independently measured results.

What does the service include?

Desktop work and software development

Claude for Government Desktop is the app discussed in the launch. Anthropic describes Cowork as a way to delegate work involving desktop files and Claude Code as a tool for software development and modernization. Agencies should assess these capabilities against their own workflows and policies rather than assume a particular outcome.

Separate government deployment paths

Claude for Government Desktop is not the only government deployment path Anthropic describes. Its government page also lists API access through AWS and Google Cloud, as well as separate Claude Gov models for classified environments on AWS. Those options have different deployment contexts; their availability should not be read as a feature of the desktop product. Anthropic’s government offerings

What controls can agency administrators configure?

Anthropic describes administrative controls intended to support management across departments and sub-agencies:

  • Department-level administrators can allocate prepaid usage to sub-agencies, which manage their own users.
  • Agencies can connect an identity provider for single sign-on. SCIM group mappings can set rate limits, dollar caps, and permitted models for seat tiers.
  • Layered configuration can establish sub-agency defaults, including which connections and features are available.
  • Organization administrators can review an audit log of administrative actions. Anthropic says sensitive operations on its side require two-person approval.
  • Usage exports provide metering data. Anthropic says this can help agencies answer ATO and Inspector General requests without moving sensitive material.
  • Conversation history stays on the agency-managed device, according to Anthropic.

The July beta announcement also described a hash-chained audit log, security configuration documentation, spending allocation and controls across departments, and deployment through standard agency mobile-device-management platforms. Anthropic’s September announcement likewise says agencies can use standard MDM platforms. These are descriptions from the company; agencies should confirm how controls operate in their intended configuration. Is Claude for Government FedRAMP High?

Anthropic’s Help Center describes Claude for Government as FedRAMP High authorized. It says the authorization is held through Palantir Federal Cloud Service – Supporting Services, with independent assessment performed by Schellman Compliance, LLC. The offering is described for U.S. federal, state, and local agencies and qualifying public-sector organizations. Anthropic Help Center overview

An authorization label alone does not establish that a service or configuration is suitable for every data type, workload, or mission. Before deployment, an agency should have its security team verify the applicable authorization package, boundary, controls, and agency-specific requirements.

Data use and handling

Anthropic says conversations and uploaded content are not used to train its models by default, and that data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Its Help Center points customers to detailed documentation for data controls, visibility, and retention; exact settings may depend on configuration. Agencies should review those details for the deployment they intend to use rather than assume all deployments handle data identically. Anthropic Help Center overview

Will government customers get the same models and features as commercial Claude?

Not necessarily at the same time or with the same model access. Anthropic says features generally follow the commercial release cadence, but its Help Center qualifies that some may arrive later for compliance review or may not be supported. For model availability, Anthropic says Claude for Government routes inference through Google Cloud Vertex AI’s FedRAMP High-authorized environment, rather than Anthropic’s commercial endpoints. New models typically become available the same day or within one to two days after commercial release once they are serving on Vertex, according to the company.

These access descriptions and rollout timing come from Anthropic’s model-availability guidance; confirm current availability and seat terms before planning a deployment. The same guidance gives October 4, 2026, as the date by which all organizations are to move to the updated Claude for Government Desktop offering. As that date is near, existing customers should check Anthropic’s current instructions for their organization. Anthropic model availability guidance · Anthropic Help Center overview

How can an agency get access?

Anthropic says new agencies can request access through its government sales route. Existing customers can move to the desktop application and import conversation history in-app. The September announcement says a separate relationship with a cloud provider is not required to get started with the desktop service.

The Help Center lists two procurement routes: buying directly through Anthropic Sales, or using Carahsoft when an agency requires a GSA-approved vehicle. State, local, and other non-federal public-sector customers are directed to request current pricing from Anthropic’s public-sector Sales team. A previously described $1-per-agency federal offer ran only through August 2026 and is no longer current. Anthropic Help Center overview · Anthropic government access information

How should agencies assess whether it fits?

Anthropic’s setup guidance recommends Claude for Government when FedRAMP High or sensitive-data requirements apply, and says Claude Enterprise may fit public-information-only work where commercial infrastructure is permitted. That is vendor guidance, not a substitute for agency policy or an authorization decision. Compare deployment options against the specific requirements that determine whether a service can be used:

  • Required authorization level, data types, and mission constraints.
  • Where inference runs and who operates the relevant security boundary.
  • Identity integration, sub-agency administration, audit review, and usage controls.
  • Model and feature availability, including any compliance-related delay or restriction.
  • Procurement route and the agency’s required purchasing vehicle.

Anthropic’s launch and setup materials provide product dates and vendor descriptions, but no independent measured statistics for productivity, savings, adoption, or mission impact. Agencies should treat those outcomes as unestablished unless they evaluate them in their own setting. Anthropic Help Center overview
