Choose Claude Code on Amazon Bedrock if your team wants Anthropic’s Claude Code workflow and needs model inference routed through its AWS Bedrock account. Choose Amazon Q Developer if you want AWS’s own coding assistant, with IDE and CLI features, AWS development guidance, and Free or Pro service tiers. They are different products with different setup, identity, pricing, and lifecycle considerations—not interchangeable versions of the same assistant.

What is the difference?

Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding assistant. When configured for Bedrock, it calls Claude models through an AWS account; the team still uses Claude Code, but Bedrock handles inference.

Amazon Q Developer is AWS’s coding assistant for IDE and CLI workflows. AWS describes it as a conversational assistant for understanding, building, extending, and operating AWS applications. Its documented features include code chat and generation, inline suggestions, security scanning, code updates, transformations, and AWS development guidance. See AWS’s Amazon Q Developer documentation.

Do not confuse Claude Code on Bedrock with Claude Platform on AWS. The latter is a separate Anthropic-operated platform offering; it is not Claude Code configured to use Bedrock. AWS explains the operator distinction in its Claude Platform on AWS vs. Amazon Bedrock comparison.

How do setup and identity differ?

Claude Code on Bedrock

Bedrock setup is an AWS platform task as well as a coding-tool choice. Your team needs an AWS account with Bedrock enabled, access to the desired Anthropic models, and suitable IAM permissions. You also need to choose AWS credentials, a region, and model IDs or aliases. Anthropic’s Claude Code on Amazon Bedrock guide describes the setup wizard and manual configuration.

For manual configuration, enable Bedrock with CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK=1. Region and credentials come from the AWS environment or profile. Anthropic recommends pinning model versions for team deployments: aliases and defaults can change, and model availability may vary by account or region. The integration uses the Bedrock Invoke API, not the Converse API; WebSearch is unavailable on Bedrock.

Amazon Q Developer

Q’s sign-in and administration depend on how it is being used and which tier applies. AWS documents free Builder ID access for IDE use and organization access through IAM Identity Center with a Pro subscription. Consult AWS’s IDE installation and setup instructions for current supported IDE versions and sign-in steps, and its Free and Pro tier documentation for tier details.

Which assistant better matches your workflow?

Team need Better fit to evaluate Why
Keep using Claude Code while routing model calls through AWS Claude Code on Bedrock It preserves the Claude Code tool and configures its inference to use Bedrock models.
Use an AWS-provided assistant across IDE and CLI workflows Amazon Q Developer Q offers IDE and CLI assistance, including chat, inline suggestions, code generation, and AWS development guidance.
Choose Claude model versions directly Claude Code on Bedrock Model IDs or aliases, regional availability, and version pinning are part of the setup decision.
Use AWS assistant features with a Free or Pro service tier Amazon Q Developer AWS documents tier-specific limits, features, identity paths, and administration.

These are workflow distinctions, not evidence that one assistant is faster, more accurate, or more productive. No comparative performance result is established here, so base a decision on your required interaction pattern, controls, workload, and rollout plan.

How should you compare costs?

Amazon Q Developer uses a tier and subscription model; Claude Code on Bedrock incurs metered Bedrock model-inference charges. Those are different cost shapes, so the listed price alone cannot determine which will cost less for a particular team.

Option Published cost detail What to include in an estimate
Amazon Q Developer Free AWS listed 50 included agentic requests per month on its pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026. Check current Free-tier limits and whether they fit the team’s expected use.
Amazon Q Developer Pro AWS listed $19 per user per month on its pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026. Count expected users and check current Pro features and terms.
Claude Code on Bedrock Metered Bedrock inference; no single team price is established. Estimate expected model and token usage using current rates for the selected model and region.

AWS’s Q pricing page also describes differences in transformation limits, administrative controls, data collection, and IP indemnity. Check the current Amazon Q Developer pricing page and current Bedrock regional rates before budgeting. A meaningful comparison needs the team size, usage pattern, chosen model, and region; neither headline pricing nor a generic per-user comparison supplies a reliable total.

What should you check about data use and governance?

AWS says certain Amazon Q Developer Free-tier content—including questions, responses, and generated code—may be used for service improvement. AWS says it does not use Q Developer Pro content for that purpose. The distinction is specific to those tiers and that stated use; it is not, by itself, a blanket privacy or compliance assessment. Review AWS’s service-improvement policy, the terms and settings that apply to your deployment, and your organization’s requirements.

For Claude Code on Bedrock, verify the AWS service terms and account settings relevant to your use. AWS’s comparison of Claude Platform on AWS and Bedrock describes the operators and data processors for those offerings, but it does not replace review of terms applicable to Claude Code invoking Bedrock.

What does the Amazon Q IDE-plugin end-of-support notice mean?

AWS says it will discontinue support for Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins on April 30, 2027. AWS points users who want similar capabilities toward Kiro, noting inline suggestions, chat, and code generation there. Treat this as a lifecycle factor for teams choosing the IDE plugin—not as an announcement that every Q interface or AWS developer product is ending. Check AWS’s current IDE-plugin end-of-support notice before making a long-term decision.

How should a team make the decision?

  1. Choose the product shape. Decide whether you specifically want Claude Code with Bedrock inference or AWS’s Q Developer assistant experience.
  2. Map identity and administration. For Bedrock, confirm model access, IAM permissions, credentials, and regions. For Q, confirm the applicable Builder ID or IAM Identity Center path and tier.
  3. Estimate real usage costs. Compare Q’s current tier costs and limits with expected Bedrock model and token usage at current regional rates.
  4. Review data policies. Confirm applicable service terms, settings, and internal requirements, especially if considering Q Free.
  5. Plan for the IDE lifecycle. If Q’s IDE plugin is central to adoption, account for the announced April 30, 2027 support end and evaluate the migration path AWS identifies.
  6. Pilot the actual workflow. Compare the teams’ real tasks, editor habits, and controls without assuming either tool is inherently more productive.
