As of October 4, 2026, Cursor Pro is listed at $20 per month, GitHub Copilot Pro at $10 per month, and Cline’s individual software is free—but their costs work differently. OpenAI Codex is included with ChatGPT plans subject to plan-dependent limits. None of these options guarantees unlimited coding-agent use for a fixed monthly fee.
How the alternatives compare
These are vendor-published prices and billing terms displayed in USD and accessed October 4, 2026. Taxes, regional variation, account eligibility, plan changes, and usage can affect what you pay. A subscription price is not a universal estimate of monthly spend.
| Option | Published price or access | How usage is limited or billed | Workflow fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Claude Pro: $20/month monthly, or $17/month when billed annually at $200 up front; Max starts at $100/month, according to Anthropic’s pricing page. | Included with paid Claude plans, but usage is shared with Claude on web, desktop, and mobile. Limits include rolling five-hour session windows and weekly limits on paid plans. Capacity varies with model, conversation length, complexity, and features. | Terminal-oriented coding agent, with usage coupled to other Claude surfaces. |
| Cursor | Pro: $20/month, according to Cursor’s pricing page. | Model-dependent usage pools reset with the billing cycle and do not roll over. Optional on-demand, pay-as-you-go use can add charges after included usage. | Editor-native coding, completion, and agent workflows. |
| GitHub Copilot | Pro: $10/month, according to GitHub’s plans page. | Chat and agent features use AI credits; usage beyond the included allowance can be billed at published model-specific rates. Paid code completions and next-edit suggestions do not consume AI credits and remain unlimited under paid plans. | IDE and GitHub-integrated completion, chat, and agent workflows. |
| OpenAI Codex | Included across ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go, according to OpenAI’s Codex plan guidance. | Limits vary by plan and workload. After included usage, available actions may include using credits, waiting for a reset, upgrading, or waiting for access to resume. | Codex workflows, including cloud execution on eligible plans and subject to rollout and workspace settings. |
| Cline | Individual software is free, according to Cline’s pricing page. | Model inference is usage-based or paid through your own API keys. The software’s free price does not cap provider charges. | Model- and provider-controlled workflows, including bring-your-own-key use. |
These figures describe different billing arrangements, not equivalent amounts of coding work. Vendor documentation does not establish a shared workload benchmark or a universal performance-per-dollar winner.
Which option is easiest to budget?
Cursor: keep on-demand usage off for a firmer ceiling
Cursor’s included usage depends on model selection, and usage pools are tracked separately, including Cursor models and third-party models. Its documentation says individual accounts must enable on-demand use; when it is enabled, pay-as-you-go charges can follow the included allowance. Check the usage dashboard for allowance and on-demand charges, and review the usage and billing guidance before relying on a monthly estimate. Unused usage does not roll over. Team settings differ: team on-demand use is enabled by default, and admins can disable it or set spending limits.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an individual who wants a predictable maximum, the useful control is not simply the $20 subscription: it is whether optional on-demand use is enabled. The price of heavy agent use cannot be inferred from the subscription alone.
GitHub Copilot: completion-heavy use can behave differently from agent-heavy use
GitHub’s $10/month Pro price may suit someone whose main need is code completion, because paid completions and next-edit suggestions do not consume AI credits. Chat, agent mode, code review, cloud agent, CLI, and Apps do use credits. GitHub says one AI credit equals $0.01 USD, and usage beyond the included allowance is billed in credits at published per-token rates. Review GitHub’s AI Credits billing documentation alongside the plan details: the low base price alone does not describe the cost of frequent agent or chat use.

Claude Code: a bounded allowance shared with Claude
Claude Code is included with paid Claude plans, but it draws from the same usage pool as Claude on web, desktop, and mobile. Anthropic says every plan has limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window, with weekly limits added on paid plans. The amount available varies with the model, conversation length, complexity, and features; there is no fixed message count. See Anthropic’s Claude pricing details for current plan terms.
This arrangement can be straightforward if you already use Claude and are comfortable sharing a bounded allowance. It is less predictable if your coding workload competes with substantial chat use or varies sharply in task size.

Codex: plan-dependent access and limits
OpenAI includes Codex across ChatGPT plans, but limits depend on the plan and factors such as model, where a task runs, task complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools. Eligible users may have Codex Cloud, subject to rollout and workspace settings. OpenAI says standard Codex Cloud environments have no separate VM charge at launch; model usage still counts toward limits or billing. After included limits, the available next step can vary by account and plan. Check OpenAI’s Codex usage guidance for your plan.
An earlier Business and Enterprise offer for Codex-only pay-as-you-go seats should not be treated as generally available to new Business customers: OpenAI updated its announcement on June 24, 2026, to say new Business seats would no longer be available, while existing seats were unaffected. The announcement is at OpenAI’s Codex plan update.

Cline: control the provider, but monitor its bill
Cline makes its individual software free, while model inference is paid by usage or through your own API keys. This gives developers provider and model choice, but it does not create a fixed ceiling by itself. Before connecting a key, check that provider’s model rates and budget controls. See Cline’s pricing page.

Estimate your likely monthly cost before switching
Since no vendor comparison here uses a common workload, estimate from your own week rather than assuming two plans with similar sticker prices buy equivalent capacity. Use this checklist:
- List the tasks you actually delegate. Separate autocomplete and small edits from multi-file changes, long conversations, code review, or cloud-agent work.
- Note your model and context habits. Model selection, task complexity, context size, reasoning, and tools can affect usage or how quickly a plan allowance is consumed.
- Identify shared pools and reset cadence. Claude Code shares usage with other Claude surfaces and has rolling five-hour and weekly limits on paid plans. Cursor usage resets with the billing cycle. Copilot agent and chat actions consume credits. Codex limits vary by plan and workload.
- Find the after-limit behavior. Check whether the tool stops, resets, offers credits, or permits metered charges. Do not assume that an included allowance is unlimited.
- Set a ceiling where possible. Disable optional on-demand use in Cursor if you do not want pay-as-you-go charges. For API-key workflows such as Cline, use the provider’s own pricing and budget controls.
- Recheck the account-specific terms. Plan eligibility, region, tax, workspace settings, and changes to vendor billing can affect both access and cost.
Do not treat a free client, included plan feature, or unlimited completion benefit as proof that all agent work is free or unlimited. The relevant question is which actions consume the allowance and what the account permits once that allowance is used.
