If you want to spend less than you do with Claude Code, there is no evidence-backed universal cheapest replacement. ChatGPT Codex and GitHub Copilot use different billing rules, and your actual cost depends on the plan, model, workload, and how much included usage you consume. Compare cost per successfully completed task—not headline subscription prices or token rates alone.

Why a lower token price may not mean a lower bill

“Token cost” can refer to several different things: usage included in a subscription, API charges based on tokens, or credits consumed under a plan. These are not interchangeable. A subscription with an allowance may be cost-effective for frequent use, while API billing makes marginal usage more visible but can vary with task size and model. Once an allowance runs out, the applicable overage or API route matters too.

Cost also depends on what the coding agent does. Model choice, input and output volume, context, reasoning effort, execution environment, speed, and tool calls can all affect consumption. A cheaper model or billing unit is not necessarily cheaper for a completed task if it needs more iterations or fails to finish it. The official vendor documentation reviewed here describes billing and usage factors; it does not establish a controlled, same-task comparison showing which product costs less.

What each alternative can—and cannot—tell you about cost

OpenAI Codex: check plan limits or API billing

Codex may be worth comparing if you already have a ChatGPT plan that includes access: the plan’s limits determine how much use is available, while an API-key setup follows API pricing. OpenAI says consumption varies with the model, where the task runs, complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools. That makes a flat monthly-plan comparison incomplete: record your actual workload and whether the plan allowance covers it. OpenAI’s Codex plan help explains the usage factors; the team-pricing announcement describes the Business-plan eligibility change dated June 24, 2026.

GitHub Copilot: compare the specific model

Copilot’s model-specific pricing documentation is the place to check the billing rule for the model you intend to use. A Copilot price without a model and billing basis can conceal important differences. The published table does not say which model will be cheapest for your tasks or quantify the cost of a successful fix. Consult GitHub’s current model pricing table for your account and chosen model.

Claude Code: measure API-billed sessions and account for caching

If you are comparing alternatives against Claude Code, first establish how you are billed. Anthropic’s usage guide documents /cost for inspecting token and dollar usage in API-billed sessions. Anthropic also says prompt caching can reduce the dollar cost of later turns, while cached content still occupies context-window space. Lower charges on repeated context therefore do not mean that the context has stopped counting toward the window. See Anthropic’s usage and limits guide; plan and team billing details are on its pricing page.

Run a fair comparison on your own coding work

A small repeatable test is more useful than comparing advertised prices in isolation. Use the same representative tasks and repository conditions for each product, then compare what you paid or consumed against work that was actually completed.

  1. Choose representative tasks. Include the kinds of work you actually delegate, such as a bug fix, a focused refactor, or a test update. Use tasks you can evaluate consistently.
  2. Record the setup. For each run, note the date, product and tool version, model, plan or API-key billing path, and relevant repository or task conditions. Record whether the task finished successfully and met the same acceptance criteria.
  3. Capture usage and charges. Record subscription allowance consumed, credits, or API usage as applicable. For an API-billed Claude Code session, use /cost to inspect reported token and dollar usage. Check each vendor’s billing page for the applicable model and plan rules.
  4. Compare cost per successful task. Include unsuccessful attempts and retries in the cost of getting a usable result. Keep plan allowance and direct API charges distinct, and repeat enough tasks to avoid treating one unusually easy or difficult job as typical.

This comparison answers a practical question—what your workload costs under each arrangement—without claiming that the result applies to every developer. The official pricing material cited above does not provide a controlled cross-vendor benchmark or a universal average monthly cost.

Which option is likely to fit your cost priorities?

  • You already pay for a ChatGPT plan: check its Codex usage limits and measure how much of your work they cover before adding API costs or changing plans.
  • You want to inspect session charges: for API-billed Claude Code use, /cost provides session token and dollar usage; account separately for any included plan usage.
  • You use GitHub Copilot: identify the exact model and its billing rule in GitHub’s current table rather than treating all Copilot models as one price.
  • You need a team arrangement: confirm current workspace eligibility and billing directly. OpenAI’s June 24, 2026 update is specific to new Codex pay-as-you-go seats for Business plans, not a universal statement about every team plan.

The evidence here does not establish current plan specifics for Cursor, Cline, Aider, OpenCode, or other alternatives. Check each product’s official pricing and model-provider billing before adding it to a cost comparison.
