Claude API pricing is usage-based: you pay separately for input and output tokens, with additional rates for prompt-cache writes, cache hits, long-context requests, asynchronous Batch API jobs, and some server-side tools. Anthropic quotes prices in MTok, or one million tokens.
At the rates listed by Anthropic on October 19, 2026, Claude Sonnet 4 costs $3 per MTok of input and $15 per MTok of output. Claude Opus 4.1 costs $15 and $75, respectively, while Claude Haiku 3.5 costs $0.80 and $4. Your actual bill depends on the model, token mix, cache use, context length, tools, endpoint and model lifecycle.
Claude API prices by model
Anthropic bills every API call according to the model and the number of tokens processed. Input tokens are the instructions, conversation history, documents and other content sent to Claude. Output tokens are the response Claude generates. Because output rates are higher than input rates, a long generated answer can cost more than a large prompt.
The following representative rates are from Anthropic’s pricing table, accessed October 19, 2026. They are per million tokens (MTok), not per request.

How to calculate a Claude API bill
For a request without caching, special context pricing or tool fees, use this estimate:
cost = (input_tokens / 1,000,000 × input_rate) + (output_tokens / 1,000,000 × output_rate)
Use the input and output rates for the model actually selected. Count tokens rather than characters or words; the API usage fields are the authoritative measurement for an invoice.
Example: Sonnet 4 request
Suppose one request contains 1,000,000 input tokens and produces 250,000 output tokens. At $3 per MTok for input and $15 per MTok for output, the estimate is:

- Input: 1 × $3 = $3.00
- Output: 0.25 × $15 = $3.75
- Total: $6.75
If the same pattern runs 100 times, the unadjusted estimate is $675. Actual usage can differ when responses are shorter, prompts vary, cache hits occur, a request crosses a long-context threshold, or a tool adds a separate charge.
Example: Opus 4.1 request
A request with 2,000,000 input tokens and 500,000 output tokens on Opus 4.1 would be $30 for input plus $37.50 for output, or $67.50 before any discounts or additional fees.

Prompt caching is designed for workloads that send the same large prefix repeatedly, such as a system prompt, codebase, policy library or conversation history. Anthropic separates the first cache write from later cache hits.
| Cache operation | Rate relative to base input price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Five-minute cache write | 1.25× base input rate | The cached content is written with a five-minute lifetime |
| One-hour cache write | 2× base input rate | The cached content is written with a one-hour lifetime |
| Cache hit or refresh | 0.1× base input rate | Previously cached content is read or refreshed at one-tenth of the base input rate |
For Sonnet 4, whose base input rate is $3 per MTok, a five-minute write is $3.75 per MTok, a one-hour write is $6 per MTok, and a cache hit is $0.30 per MTok. Output tokens still use the normal $15-per-MTok output rate.
The economics depend on how often the prefix is reused before it expires. A cache hit saves 90% against sending that same content as ordinary input, but the initial write costs more than a normal input token. Measure the hit rate and expiration pattern rather than assuming caching always lowers the bill. Choose the five-minute lifetime for bursts close together; choose one hour when requests are spread over a longer period and the extra write premium is worthwhile.

Batch API discounts for asynchronous work
Anthropic’s Batch API gives a 50% discount on both input and output tokens for asynchronous processing. It is intended for jobs that do not need an immediate response, such as bulk classification, offline summarization, evaluation runs or large-scale content preparation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For example, the $6.75 Sonnet 4 request above would be approximately $3.375 when both its input and output are processed through Batch API pricing, before cache, tool or context adjustments. Batch pricing requires batch processing; a normal synchronous request does not receive the discount.
Anthropic states that Batch API and prompt-caching discounts can be combined. In a combined workflow, apply the cache operation’s multiplier to the applicable input category and then apply the batch discount according to the billing rules for that job. Keep separate records for ordinary input, cache writes, cache hits and output so the estimate can be reconciled with usage data.
Long-context pricing for Sonnet 4
Sonnet 4 has a documented 1-million-token context beta with a premium tier. When total input exceeds 200,000 tokens, the documented rates are $6 per MTok of input and $22.50 per MTok of output, and the entire request is billed at the higher tier. The threshold is not applied only to the excess tokens.
Long-context example
A request containing 300,000 input tokens and 100,000 output tokens would cost:

- Input: 0.3 × $6 = $1.80
- Output: 0.1 × $22.50 = $2.25
- Total: $4.05
At ordinary Sonnet 4 rates, the same token counts would be $0.90 plus $1.50, or $2.40. That difference is why applications should monitor total input before crossing 200,000 tokens. Trimming retrieved passages, summarizing old turns and keeping stable instructions in a cache can reduce both token volume and the chance of entering the premium tier.
How tools change the total cost
Tool use is part of token accounting. Tool schemas sent with a request and tool-result content returned to Claude count as input tokens, so verbose JSON schemas and large result payloads increase the normal input charge. Keep schemas concise and return only the fields Claude needs.
Server-side tools can add a separate usage fee in addition to token charges. Anthropic’s pricing page gives web search as an example at $10 per 1,000 searches, plus the standard token costs for the request and the search results. A workflow that performs 250 searches would therefore incur $2.50 in search fees before token usage. Set application-level limits and log each tool invocation when estimating a production budget.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using Claude through Amazon Bedrock
Amazon Bedrock is an alternative route to Claude rather than a different token-metering concept. It can be useful when an organization wants cloud-provider identity, regional controls, procurement or other Bedrock features, but feature support and model availability can differ from direct Anthropic API access.
Anthropic documents a 10% premium for regional endpoints for Sonnet 4.5 and later compared with global endpoints. That statement applies to those newer model families; do not automatically add 10% to every Claude model or every Bedrock request. Confirm the endpoint type, model version, region, supported features and the price shown by the relevant cloud account before committing to a forecast.

Compare direct API and Bedrock on more than the token rate: routing, data-residency requirements, authentication, quotas, tool support, logging and operational ownership can change the effective cost and implementation effort.
Which pricing option fits a workload?
| Workload characteristic | Cost decision | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated large instructions or documents | Evaluate prompt caching | Cache hits are charged at 0.1× the base input rate, while writes carry a 1.25× or 2× multiplier |
| Large offline queue with no immediate response requirement | Use Batch API where supported | Input and output receive a 50% asynchronous discount |
| More than 200,000 input tokens on Sonnet 4 | Measure the long-context premium or reduce context | The whole request moves to the documented $6/$22.50 rates |
| Low-cost, high-volume generation | Start with the lower-priced model that meets quality requirements | Haiku 3.5 has lower listed input and output rates than Sonnet 4 and Opus 4.1 |
| Complex work that justifies a premium model | Compare Opus 4.1’s quality needs against its token rates | Its listed output rate is five times Sonnet 4’s and its input rate is five times Sonnet 4’s |
The table is a budgeting framework, not a quality ranking. Choose a model by testing the minimum capability, latency and throughput your application needs, then multiply measured token volumes by the applicable rate categories.
Is there a free tier for the Claude API?
A current free-tier amount is not established by the pricing information available here. Do not build a production forecast around an assumed number of free tokens or a permanent trial. Check the account’s current Anthropic terms and Console billing view for any credit, trial or promotional allowance that applies to your organization and region.

Claude model names are not permanent product identifiers. Anthropic’s deprecation documentation records 2026 retirements for several Claude 3 and Claude 4 models and lists replacements. A comparison that omits the exact model ID and a “checked on” date can become inaccurate when a model is retired, moved, or repriced.
Before publishing a cost estimate or deploying a new model, verify the live pricing table, the deprecation status, context-window eligibility, cache rules, tool fees and the endpoint used. Keep the model ID in configuration rather than relying on a generic family name, and alert on API errors that indicate a retired or unavailable model.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist for estimating monthly spend
- Record the exact model ID, endpoint and region.
- Measure input and output tokens separately from representative production traffic.
- Multiply each category by its current per-MTok rate.
- Classify repeated prefixes as five-minute writes, one-hour writes or cache hits.
- Mark asynchronous jobs that qualify for Batch API’s 50% discount.
- Flag requests above 200,000 input tokens when using Sonnet 4’s long-context beta.
- Add server-side tool charges, such as per-search fees, to token costs.
- Reconcile the estimate with Anthropic Console or the applicable cloud-provider usage records.
- Recheck rates and deprecation notices whenever a model, endpoint or workload changes.
