Classic Doom’s engine source code is freely available, but that does not make the original game’s levels, graphics, and sounds free to copy. To play fan-made levels, you need game data (usually an IWAD), a compatible source port or official game edition, and the mod files. For the simplest cross-platform co-op or deathmatch, Bethesda’s combined DOOM + DOOM II edition offers integrated multiplayer; for DOS-era behavior, advanced mod features, or community-hosted play, choose a source port suited to the WAD you want to run.
This guide separates the engine from the game files, explains WADs and ports, and covers mod setup and multiplayer options. Bethesda’s documented update notes through April 2025 are included; availability and compatibility can change with later game or port updates.
Is Doom open source or free?
The released Doom engine code is open source under GPL-2.0; the original commercial game data is a separate matter. The levels, artwork, and sounds in the original games are not made free to redistribute just because the engine source is available. You can use a legitimately obtained game-data file with a source port, or use independently created free content such as Freedoom.

Those are different facts, and the older README should not be mistaken for the current license.

The code release was not simply the original DOS build made public. Carmack explained that the published code compiled on Linux because the DOS version relied on a copyrighted sound library. In other words, “Doom source code” does not mean a complete, legally redistributable copy of the DOS game.
What are IWADs, WADs, and source ports?
An IWAD provides a game’s base data, a PWAD or mod adds or changes content, and a source port is an engine that loads that data. These parts work together, but they are not interchangeable: having a port does not automatically supply commercial game assets, and a WAD is not guaranteed to work with every port.
- IWAD: the main game-data archive, which can contain levels, graphics, sounds, and other resources. A legitimately installed Doom game is a conventional source for its IWAD.
- PWAD or mod: additional content, such as fan-made levels or changes to gameplay. Its documentation should say which base game and engine it expects.
- Source port: a separately maintained engine implementation. Ports differ in how closely they reproduce original behavior, which features they add, and which mods they support.
- Freedoom: independently made free/libre game content. It can provide an alternative set of assets, but it is not a copy or a giveaway of id Software’s commercial art, levels, or sounds.
Before downloading or launching a mod, check its stated requirements. A WAD may expect a particular IWAD, a particular source port, or a feature that only some engines implement. A port’s general ability to load mods is not proof that it can run a specific WAD correctly.
Which Doom edition or source port should I choose?
Choose based on the experience and mod you want, not on a blanket claim that one option “supports Doom mods.” The official combined release suits players who want built-in cross-platform multiplayer and a mod browser; Chocolate Doom prioritizes original DOS-era behavior; GZDoom targets modders who need advanced features; and Zandronum emphasizes multiplayer and varied modes.
| Option | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DOOM + DOOM II (Bethesda) | Integrated co-op, deathmatch, cross-play, split-screen, and browsing supported mods | Official mod multiplayer has format limits: Bethesda specifies Vanilla Doom, DeHackEd, MBF21, or Boom-authored compatibility. |
| Chocolate Doom | A DOS-oriented experience that aims to reproduce original behavior | It deliberately preserves original limitations, so a modern mod that needs advanced engine features may not be suitable. |
| GZDoom | Mods built around advanced engine features | Its modder-friendly focus and OpenGL/Vulkan support do not mean every WAD works in it—or that a GZDoom-specific mod works elsewhere. |
| Zandronum | Community multiplayer and a range of multiplayer modes | Its developer-maintained README describes broad capabilities, not a guarantee of compatibility for a particular WAD or every release. |
For a DOS-faithful run, a mod’s compatibility notes may rule out a feature-rich port. For a scripted or visually advanced mod, its author may require GZDoom or another specific engine. For online play, the intended multiplayer model matters too: an engine built around community hosting is a different setup from the official release’s cross-platform rooms. Do not assume that two players using different ports can join the same match.

How do I play fan-made levels (WADs) and other modifications?
First identify the WAD’s required base game and port; then obtain the matching game data and follow the mod author’s loading instructions. A Chocolate Doom command is one documented example, not a universal recipe for every engine or mod.
- Read the mod’s requirements. Look for the required IWAD or base game, supported port, and any special instructions. If the creator names an engine, use that engine unless its documentation says otherwise.
- Make sure you have the game data. Use a legitimately obtained IWAD for commercial Doom content. If you want independently made free content instead, investigate Freedoom; do not treat engine source code as a license to copy commercial WAD files.
- Install or launch the specified port. Get its instructions from the port’s maintainers and check the version or features the mod expects. Port interfaces and commands differ.
- Load the WAD using the port’s documented method. Chocolate Doom documents
-iwadfor choosing game data and-file level.wadas a typical way to load a level. For example, the general form ischocolate-doom -iwad doom2.wad -file level.wad, but file locations and the executable name depend on your installation. Use the mod’s own instructions for unusual requirements. - Confirm that the correct content starts. If the game reports missing resources, fails to launch, or opens the wrong game, recheck the selected IWAD, the WAD’s requirements, and the port’s loading syntax. A WAD that loads in one engine may still rely on features another engine lacks.
The official DOOM + DOOM II edition has a mod browser and a different workflow from launching a WAD in a desktop source port. Bethesda’s instructions for that release say to select a mod in-game; they should not be confused with Chocolate Doom command-line arguments.
How do I create a Doom mod?
Start by choosing a target game and engine, then build and test content against the features that target supports. Bethesda names DoomTools, Ultimate Doom Builder, and SLADE as tools for creating or editing mods, and says in-game mod uploading is available on PC.
The most important early decision is compatibility. A map or gameplay modification intended for a specific source port can depend on that engine’s features; a project intended for a wider range of players needs to follow the formats and limits those players’ engines support. Write down the required IWAD, port, and format in the mod’s instructions so players can tell what they need before downloading it.
For the official release’s multiplayer mod support, Bethesda’s January 28, 2025 Update 2 notes state: “Mods must be authored with Vanilla DOOM, DeHackEd, MBF21 or BOOM to be compatible.” That requirement applies to the official edition’s supported multiplayer mods; it is not a universal list of every format supported by all source ports.

How does Doom multiplayer work?
For an integrated cross-platform match, use the official combined edition; for community-port play, follow that port’s own hosting and connection instructions. The official release supports online co-op and deathmatch with cross-platform play, while source ports have their own multiplayer models and commands.
Recommended Free Tools
Bethesda’s 2024 launch notes report up to 16 players in online co-op or deathmatch. They also report four-player local split-screen on all supported platforms, with eight-player split-screen on PC and Xbox Series X|S. These are specifications for the combined official edition, not player limits for every port. The same notes report 43 deathmatch levels following a 25-map addition; that count describes the release notes, not all community-made maps.
For community play, Chocolate Doom documents -server and -connect for its own Internet play. Those are Chocolate Doom options, not instructions for Bethesda’s edition. Zandronum describes a client/server multiplayer approach and varied modes. In either case, check the port’s current instructions and make sure players agree on the game data, mod, and compatible engine setup.
How do I play with friends on other platforms?
The documented cross-platform option is Bethesda’s combined DOOM + DOOM II release. Its 2024 notes describe cross-platform online co-op and deathmatch; the cited player limits and local split-screen support are for that release. Do not assume community ports offer the same cross-play or that their multiplayer sessions connect to official-game rooms.
Use the official edition’s in-game multiplayer flow and room code or invitation options, rather than entering source-port commands. Players need an online connection for online play. Bethesda says single-player, local split-screen, and LAN play can be used offline; that distinction matters if the group is sharing a local network rather than joining over the Internet.

Can we play a mod together in the official Doom release?
Yes, following Bethesda’s January 2025 Update 2, if the mod and setup meet the release’s compatibility requirements. The host activates the mod before opening multiplayer, and joining players subscribe to the same mod.
- The host selects and activates the mod before starting the multiplayer session.
- Joining players subscribe to that same mod so the session uses matching content.
- Confirm the mod was authored with Vanilla Doom, DeHackEd, MBF21, or Boom, the formats Bethesda names as compatible.
A mod that requires GZDoom-specific features should not be assumed to work in the official edition’s multiplayer. Nor should “works in single-player” be treated as proof of official multiplayer compatibility. If a session fails, first check that everyone has the same mod selected and that it uses a supported format.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is included in the current combined DOOM + DOOM II release?
Bethesda’s launch list included multiple classic campaigns and collections, and a later update added another built-in selection. The 2024 release notes listed Doom, Doom II, Master Levels, TNT, Plutonia, No Rest for the Living, SIGIL, and Legacy of Rust. Update 3, dated April 10, 2025, made SIGIL II a built-in selection.
That distinction is useful because the 2024 list describes launch content, not an immutable inventory. Bethesda’s dated notes document the additions above, but they do not guarantee that no later update has changed the current selection. Check the game’s own current content listing if a particular campaign matters to your purchase or installation.

Offline availability is not the same as having a physical disc or installer that works without a download. Bethesda’s description of the physical DOOM Anthology says the box includes keycodes and requires downloads. Treat the physical package as a way to obtain those codes, not as a promise of playable discs or a standalone offline installer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Freedoom to play every classic Doom mod?
No. Freedoom supplies independent game data, but a mod may require a specific commercial IWAD, particular resources, or a specific port. Check the mod’s requirements rather than assuming an alternative IWAD will satisfy them.
Does the physical Doom Anthology include playable game discs?
Bethesda describes the physical package as containing keycodes and requiring downloads. The box should not be treated as a disc-based or standalone offline installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does a WAD open in one source port but not another?
WADs can rely on engine features, data, or formats that differ between ports. The mod creator’s stated port and base-game requirements are more useful than a general claim that an engine supports mods.
Can I upload a mod from a console in the official release?
Bethesda says in-game mod uploading is available on PC. The available information does not establish the same upload capability for consoles, so do not assume the PC workflow applies there.
