The Cockroach Janta Party’s protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park ended on October 2, 2026, with party leader Abhijeet Dipke publicly thanking Mumbai Police for their cooperation. The demonstration called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls; those claims were the protesters’ stated reason, not a finding established by the event coverage.
What happened at Shivaji Park?
Thousands gathered at Shivaji Park on Friday, October 2, as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) began a new phase of protest, according to The New Indian Express. The reports did not give a precise crowd count or describe a counting method. CJP demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, alleging irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The coverage reports the demand and allegation; it does not independently establish that the rolls were improperly revised.
The gathering drew actor Shabana Azmi, actor Naseeruddin Shah and musician Vishal Dadlani, while a group calling itself Gen Next Mumbai held a parallel counter-protest, the contemporaneous coverage reported. Azmi said, “This is a question of our democracy. It is a question of our rights. It is a question of our voice.” Her remarks express a participant’s view, rather than independently verifying voter-list removals.
Why did Dipke thank Mumbai Police?
After the protest, Dipke posted a message thanking officers for their cooperation. Hindustan Times reported his words: “Thank you, Mumbai Police, for your cooperation today. Salute to all the police personnel who were on duty! Jai Hind. Delhi Police, seekh lo kuch Mumbai Police se.” His praise explains the headline; it does not mean police had approved the gathering.

Did Mumbai Police permit the protest?
Reports said police had denied permission for the proposed gathering, but protesters went ahead under heavy security. The coverage attributed the objections to restrictions on gatherings at Shivaji Park, a lack of required civic permission, traffic and noise concerns, and the need to keep emergency vehicles moving. These are reported reasons for the denial, not a judicial determination about the protest.
Why was CJP protesting in Mumbai?
Dipke said the choice of Mumbai reflected a contrast in Maharashtra’s election results: the BJP won nine of the state’s 48 Lok Sabha seats in 2024, followed by a different result in the state Assembly election. That was his explanation for the location, not evidence that SIR irregularities occurred. CJP’s demand remained focused on Kumar’s resignation over the party’s allegations about electoral rolls.

What did CJP say it might do next?
On October 2, Dipke announced a conditional plan to protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10 if Kumar did not resign. The New Indian Express quoted the CJP founder saying, “If Gyanesh Kumar doesn’t resign, cockroaches from across India will march to Delhi & protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10.” He described the proposed action as peaceful. The announcement was a stated plan at that time; the cited coverage does not establish whether the Jantar Mantar protest subsequently took place. It followed CJP’s earlier agitation at Jantar Mantar.
