Cisco rates CVE-2026-20045 Critical: an unauthenticated remote attacker may exploit crafted HTTP requests to a web-based management interface to gain user-level access to the underlying operating system and then escalate privileges to root. Cisco says it is aware of attempted exploitation in the wild. There is no workaround; administrators should move to a fixed release or apply the applicable version-specific patch.
What the Cisco vulnerability does
CVE-2026-20045 stems from improper validation of user-supplied input in HTTP requests. According to Cisco’s security advisory, an attacker does not need to authenticate before sending a sequence of crafted requests to the affected device’s web-based management interface. Successful exploitation could provide user-level access to the underlying operating system, followed by privilege escalation to root.
Cisco assigns the vulnerability a CVSS base score of 8.2 and labels it Critical. The score is Cisco’s severity metric for this vulnerability, not a measure of confirmed incidents. Cisco’s Product Security Incident Response Team says: “The Cisco PSIRT is aware of attempted exploitation of this vulnerability in the wild.” That statement indicates attempted exploitation, not that every vulnerable installation has been compromised.
Which Cisco products and Unity Connection releases are affected?
The advisory covers multiple Cisco Unified Communications products; it is not limited to Unity Connection. For Unity Connection, the fixed-release guidance depends on the installed major release:

These release labels are Cisco’s guidance in the CVE-2026-20045 advisory, published January 21, 2026 and updated February 13, 2026. They are not a substitute for checking the exact installed version and current compatibility guidance before changing a production system. Cisco notes that its advisory validates only the affected and fixed release information documented there.
How to patch or migrate Unity Connection
- Identify the installed release. Record the exact Unity Connection version and service update, then compare it with the fixed-release guidance above.
- Use the official advisory and patch README. Open Cisco’s CVE-2026-20045 advisory and follow the release-specific patch README. Cisco says patches are version-specific, so do not assume that a patch for one release applies to another.
- Check deployment compatibility and access. Verify hardware and software compatibility and consult current Cisco guidance before upgrading. Access to downloads or upgrade advice may require a valid entitlement, Cisco TAC, or a maintenance provider.
- Apply the fixed software or complete the required migration. For release 12.5, Cisco’s stated path is migration to a fixed release. For release 14 or 15, use the listed service update or the applicable version-specific patch, following Cisco’s instructions.
- Verify the resulting version. After the change, confirm that the installed release matches the applicable fixed guidance and review Cisco’s current security advisories for any subsequent notices affecting the deployment.
Is there a workaround?
No workaround addresses CVE-2026-20045. Cisco states: “There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.” Limiting access to a management interface may be part of an organization’s broader security controls, but it is not a Cisco-recognized workaround or replacement for moving to fixed software.

Do not confuse this with Cisco’s later Unity Connection advisories
Cisco published a separate Unity Connection advisory on May 6, 2026, for CVE-2026-20034 and CVE-2026-20035. Cisco rated those vulnerabilities High, with CVSS base scores of 8.8 and 7.2, respectively. That notice describes different flaws and attack paths and reported no known public announcements or malicious use at the time it was published. Its overlapping fixed-release labels—14SU5 and 15SU4, with migration required for 12.5 and earlier—do not make it interchangeable with the Critical CVE-2026-20045 advisory.
To check Cisco’s notices by product, use the Unity Connection security advisory index. Follow the advisory that matches the specific CVE being assessed.
