CISA has observed attackers exploiting CVE-2023-1671, a critical pre-authentication command-injection flaw in Sophos Web Appliance (SWA). Sophos says SWA version 4.3.10.4 resolves the flaw, but the appliance reached end of life on July 20, 2023. Administrators still running it should verify the installed version, keep it behind a firewall, and ensure it is not accessible from the public internet.
Is Sophos Web Appliance affected?
The Sophos advisory covers three vulnerabilities resolved in SWA 4.3.10.4. CISA’s in-the-wild exploitation observation applies specifically to CVE-2023-1671; it should not be taken to mean that all three flaws were observed in attacks.
| CVE | Severity | Issue and access requirement | Exploitation evidence in the advisory |
|---|---|---|---|
| CVE-2023-1671 | Critical | Pre-authentication command injection in the warn-proceed handler that can allow arbitrary code execution. |
Sophos reports that CISA observed this vulnerability being used in the wild. |
| CVE-2022-4934 | High | Post-authentication command injection in the exception wizard, which can allow administrators to execute arbitrary code. | The advisory does not say this flaw was observed in the wild. |
| CVE-2020-36692 | Medium | Reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) through POST in the report scheduler. It requires a logged-in victim to be tricked into submitting a malicious form hosted on an attacker-controlled site. | The advisory does not say this flaw was observed in the wild. |
Sophos describes the three fixes in its SWA 4.3.10.4 security advisory. For CVE-2020-36692, NVD lists a CVSS 3.1 score of 6.5 (medium) and describes the logged-in victim and malicious-form conditions in its CVE-2020-36692 entry.
What makes CVE-2023-1671 urgent?
The flaw is a command injection in a handler that does not require authentication. Sophos says exploitation can permit arbitrary code execution, and its advisory attributes the finding of active exploitation to CISA: “CISA observed this vulnerability being used in the wild.” The advisory does not provide a victim count or number of attacks, so no scale should be inferred from that statement.

Which version fixes the vulnerabilities?
Sophos identifies SWA 4.3.10.4 as the release that resolves all three listed vulnerabilities. The vendor says updates install automatically by default. Confirm the appliance is actually running the resolving release rather than assuming that automatic updates completed; the advisory does not list a workaround.
What should administrators do with an appliance still in use?
- Check the installed version. Confirm whether the appliance is on SWA 4.3.10.4, the resolving release named in Sophos’s advisory.
- Restrict network exposure. Sophos recommends protecting SWA with a firewall and not making it accessible via the public internet.
- Review lifecycle and support options. SWA reached end of life on July 20, 2023. Verify current support or replacement options with Sophos or your provider; the advisory does not specify a migration path.
Buying used SWA hardware does not address the product’s end-of-life status. The advisory supplies no further migration instructions, so organizations should obtain a supported path from their provider rather than assume the patched legacy appliance remains a supported long-term solution.

What is known about CISA’s warning?
Sophos’s advisory, first published April 4, 2023 and updated November 17, 2023, reports CISA’s observation of CVE-2023-1671 exploitation. It does not establish a CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog addition date, a federal remediation deadline, or details of a binding directive. Those details should not be inferred from the vendor’s statement alone.
