These are features of that release, not a description of the latest Cinnamon version. Linux Mint lists version 21.2 as supported until 2027.
What’s new in Cinnamon 5.8?
The changes span both the desktop and its file manager. Linux Mint’s Cinnamon 5.8 feature list for Linux Mint 21.2 describes the following additions and updates:
- Styles: A redesigned way to apply coordinated theme choices, with light, dark, and mixed modes and color variants.
- Gestures: Support for tasks involving windows, workspaces, tiling, and media controls, across touchpads, touchscreens, and tablets.
- Notifications: A visual redesign that uses the accent color and prefers symbolic icons where available.
- Main menu: The menu can be resized by dragging its edge.
- Theme effects: Experimental support for bumpmap and blur effects.
- Nemo thumbnails: Thumbnail generation became multithreaded. Linux Mint says this uses more CPU but can load directory contents faster, especially in folders with many media files.
How do I switch between light and dark themes in Cinnamon?
In Cinnamon 5.8, the Styles approach is the simpler way to change the desktop’s overall appearance: choose a style, then select a mode such as light, dark, or mixed and a color variant. This groups related theme choices instead of requiring you to select every component separately.
If you want more precise control, use the advanced settings to choose individual themes. The two approaches suit different needs:

How do Cinnamon 5.8 gestures work?
Linux Mint describes gestures by the desktop task they support: window management, workspace management, tiling, and media controls. The release notes name touchpads, touchscreens, and tablets as supported device categories.

What changed in notifications, the menu, and Nemo?
Notifications
Notifications were redesigned to use the desktop’s accent color and to prefer symbolic icons when possible. The stated change is visual; the feature list does not describe a new notification workflow.

Main menu
You can resize the main menu by dragging its edge. This gives you a way to adjust its footprint without relying on a fixed menu size.
Nemo thumbnail loading
Nemo now generates thumbnails using multiple threads. Linux Mint notes the trade-off: the approach uses more CPU, while directory contents can load faster, particularly when a folder contains many media files. The feature description provides no benchmark percentages, so the improvement should not be treated as a quantified speed guarantee.

Which Cinnamon 5.8 theme effects were experimental?
Cinnamon 5.8 added experimental support for bumpmap and blur effects in themes. “Experimental” matters: the release notes do not establish that these effects work consistently across themes or systems, or that they are as polished as standard theme options. Treat them as exploratory rather than as guaranteed visual features.

Cinnamon 5.8 is the feature set associated with Linux Mint 21.2 “Victoria,” not a claim about the current Cinnamon release. Linux Mint’s release page says Linux Mint 21.2 is supported until 2027; it does not give a more precise end date in the cited statement. The Linux Mint February 2023 development update discussed changes then being implemented for 21.2, while the later feature page is the source for the released feature descriptions.
