Play Chrono Trigger first if this is your first classic Square Enix role-playing game. Its compact time-travel premise, bright tone, seamless battle transitions, and clearly directed adventure make it the easier starting point. Choose Final Fantasy VI instead if you want a darker post-war story, a much larger ensemble, and deeper party customization through magicite. If you intend to play both, Chrono Trigger provides the cleaner introduction; Final Fantasy VI is the more expansive follow-up.

Combat is designed to flow directly from exploration. Square Enix highlights “seamless battles,” so encounters do not depend on a dramatic transition to a separate battle screen in the way many older role-playing games did. That presentation helps the game feel quick even when you are learning its systems.
The mobile edition retains the story and battle presentation and adds the Nintendo DS-era Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum content. Square Enix lists the iPhone and iPod touch release as December 9, 2011, and the Android release as December 22, 2011. Its PC edition appears in Square Enix’s press catalog as a February 27, 2018 release. The mobile-era product page also records 3.5 million cumulative worldwide shipments as of 2018; that is a historical shipment figure, not a current sales total.
What Final Fantasy VI offers
Final Fantasy VI originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994. Its premise begins after the War of the Magi, a conflict that left the world changed and magic nearly gone. The Empire controls and exploits what remains. Terra is enslaved by the Empire, and her escape with Locke becomes the entry point into a much larger resistance story.
That setup gives Final Fantasy VI a darker political frame than Chrono Trigger. The central questions concern power, memory, oppression, technology, and what happens when a society tries to control a force it barely understands. The game still has humor and lighter character moments, but its dramatic structure repeatedly returns to the consequences of war and authoritarian rule.
Square Enix describes a robust roster of playable characters. Instead of building the entire experience around a small permanent party, Final Fantasy VI gives you a broad ensemble with different backgrounds, personalities, and combat identities. Managing that cast is part of the game’s appeal: you are not merely strengthening one fixed group, you are learning how different characters fit into a changing team.
Its defining customization system is magicite. Magicite lets party members learn magic and receive other ability benefits, while also providing access to summons. That system means character roles are not completely locked. You can shape a party around preferred spells and abilities, experiment with different combinations, and adjust your approach as the story introduces new members.

Chrono Trigger concentrates its impact through a time-spanning route and a focused central premise. The remaster also includes a bestiary, an illustration gallery, and a music player. Those additions make it more convenient to revisit the game’s art, enemy information, and soundtrack after or between sessions.
