No supported platforms, save system, save-transfer method, or update schedule for a full-game version is established. A separate fan project recreates only the End of Time scene; it is not the HD-2D concept.
Is the Chrono Trigger HD-2D project playable?
The HD-2D work covered in reporting is a video demonstration of a visual concept, not a downloadable Chrono Trigger remake. The report said no playable demo was planned at the time it was published. That describes the project as reported then; it does not establish what its creator may do in the future. Vandal’s report also describes a separate, limited recreation of the End of Time scene. Do not treat that scene recreation as a playable full-game version of the HD-2D concept.

What platforms does it support?
No platform list is established for a playable, full-game HD-2D fan project. Since the reported HD-2D work is a video concept rather than a released game, there are no verified fan-game platform requirements to cite. The Windows availability reported for the separate End of Time scene recreation applies to that distinct project, not the HD-2D concept; check its creator’s page for current download status.
Do fan-project saves work, and can progress transfer between devices?
No save system or save-transfer method for a full-game HD-2D fan release is documented. Save features listed for Square Enix’s official game are not evidence about the fan concept.

Official Steam edition: autosave, Cloud, and a save-file limit
Square Enix’s commercial Chrono Trigger Steam listing describes autosave and Steam Cloud. Separately, Square Enix Support’s Steam save-file guidance says users may be unable to save after reaching a 1 GB game-save limit and recommends deleting some saves or disabling Steam Cloud Saves. This limit and workaround concern the official Steam edition, not a fan project.
Are updates available?
No verified update schedule or changelog for a playable full-game HD-2D fan release is established. Square Enix’s Steam update history and support materials refer to its own commercial game, not the fan concept. For a current project status, consult the named creator’s own page rather than assuming that a reposted video or third-party download listing is current.

Is the fan project legal or officially approved?
The available information does not support a categorical legal conclusion about an unidentified fan project. Square Enix’s Chrono Trigger video and image guidelines, last updated April 10, 2025, permit specified sharing of game images and gameplay videos subject to the policy’s conditions. They also say: “SQUARE ENIX reserves the right to object to any use of the Materials and may submit takedown requests to third parties hosting any such content.”
That media-use policy is not blanket permission for a fan game or remake, use of copied game assets, or distribution of a fan-made game. It also does not establish that the reported HD-2D concept has been approved by Square Enix.

What can I play officially?
Square Enix’s official Steam edition is a separate commercial release, listed as released on February 27, 2018. Its store page describes updated controls, higher-resolution graphics and sound, the Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum dungeons, autosave, and Steam Cloud. Those features belong to Square Enix’s game, not the HD-2D fan concept. The listing is for the Steam edition; check the store for current regional availability and system requirements. Square Enix Japan’s franchise page notes that it includes information from older versions, so it should not be used alone to determine current availability in every region.
