In April 2019, Chromium development changes indicated that Google was working on fingerprint-sensor support for the ChromeOS platform code-named Hatch. That was evidence of development work—not confirmation that every Chromebook built on Hatch would ship with a fingerprint reader.
What is Chromebook “Hatch”?
Hatch is a ChromeOS platform or baseboard codename, not the retail name of one Chromebook. Google’s ChromeOS developer device list associates Hatch with multiple retail models, including the HP Elite c1030 Chromebook and the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook (13-inch, 5th generation).
That association identifies the platform behind those devices; it does not say that every model or configuration includes the same optional hardware.
What indicated fingerprint support was in development?
A report published by Chrome Unboxed on April 13, 2019, quoted two Chromium change descriptions: “hatch: enable biod” and “hatch_fp: enable fp_sensor task.” The report interpreted these changes as work on fingerprint-scanner support for Hatch. They are development descriptions, not a product announcement or confirmation of a shipping Chromebook’s specifications. Read the original report.

Did every Hatch Chromebook get a fingerprint reader?
No such conclusion follows from the platform changes. ChromiumOS documentation lists bloonchipper, also known as hatch_fp, among firmware boards for fingerprint hardware. It explains that ChromeOS configuration determines whether a device has a fingerprint sensor and which fingerprint firmware applies. The factory documentation also says the Hatch board can use either bloonchipper or dartmonkey firmware.
Those details show that hardware and firmware configuration can vary; they do not establish which retail models or individual SKUs included a reader. Before relying on fingerprint support for a particular Chromebook, check the exact model and configuration specifications rather than inferring it from the Hatch codename.

What can a supported ChromeOS fingerprint reader do?
Google’s Chromebook Help documentation says supported readers can unlock a Chromebook and sign in to eligible websites and apps. Google also says fingerprint data is not shared with Google or apps on the device. Availability of these actions depends on a supported device and eligible services; the help page does not turn the 2019 Hatch development changes into proof of support on every Hatch-based model.
