Chrome Actions let you change settings and launch browser features without digging through menus: click the address bar, type a task such as “Chrome settings,” “Create Google doc,” “Delete history,” or “Safety check,” then select the action chip shown beneath the search bar. The available chips depend on your device, Chrome version and configuration.

How to use Chrome Actions

  1. Click or tap Chrome’s address bar (the omnibox).
  2. Type a task in ordinary language, for example Chrome settings, Create Google doc, Delete history or Safety check.
  3. Choose the matching action chip beneath the search bar. Chrome opens the relevant feature or settings page.

Google Chrome Help describes the feature as a way to “modify settings or use features from Chrome’s address bar.” See Google’s computer instructions for its current examples.

What you can do on each platform

Chrome does not expose an identical action list everywhere. Use these examples as documented starting points, not as a guarantee that every phrase will work on every installation.

Platform Documented Chrome Action examples What to expect
Windows, macOS, Linux and Chromebook Create a document, event, form, note or presentation; open settings; view history Google’s desktop help lists productivity actions as well as browser-management tasks.
Android Manage passwords, open Incognito, view history, run Safety Check; location-related actions such as reviews, directions and calling The available chips can vary with account, location and Chrome rollout.
iPhone and iPad Manage passwords, open Incognito, view history and run Safety Check Google’s iOS list differs from both desktop and Android.

Read the platform-specific documentation for Android and iPhone and iPad before relying on a particular chip.

Chrome Actions are not the same as ordinary address-bar search

The omnibox remains Chrome’s general search and navigation field. It can also find bookmarks and browsing history, as explained in Chrome’s web-search help. Chrome Actions are the distinct interaction in which a task phrase produces a browser action chip that you select.

You can create shortcuts that search particular sites, such as a news site or shopping service, and choose a default search engine. Those controls are covered in Google’s default-search and site-shortcut instructions; they do not turn a site search into a Chrome Action.

Other address-bar features you may see

Chrome also documents features adjacent to the omnibox, including asking Google about a page, AI Mode and Lens. Treat those as separate tools rather than alternate names for Chrome Actions. Some capabilities depend on the default search engine; newer AI functions may require you to be signed in and may still be rolling out beyond the United States. Details and labels can change, so check Google’s current search documentation.

When an action chip does not appear

  • Check the wording: use a simple task phrase such as “Chrome settings” or “Safety check,” then look beneath the suggestions for a chip.
  • Verify the default search engine: Google says a Chrome feature may be unavailable when the selected search engine does not support it.
  • Consider platform differences: a desktop action may not exist on Android or iOS, and vice versa.
  • Check sign-in and rollout limits: some search and AI-related functions require Chrome sign-in or are being released gradually.
  • Check managed-device policies: a work or school administrator can control search-engine settings and related availability.

If no chip appears, Chrome will usually treat the phrase as a normal web search; selecting a search result will not invoke a Chrome Action.

Why this is worth learning

Chrome Actions shorten multi-step navigation for recurring browser tasks. Instead of opening the three-dot menu, locating a settings page and then finding a tool, you can request the task in the same field you already use for navigation. The main limitation is discoverability: the vocabulary and action set are not universal, so a phrase that works on one platform or account may produce only search results on another.
