Chromebooks include a built-in Focus mode that combines a timed work session, optional Google Tasks goal, background sound and Do Not Disturb. Open the time area in the bottom-right corner, choose Focus, configure the session and select Start.

How to enable Focus mode on a Chromebook

  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the system tray.
  2. Select Focus.
  3. Set the session duration.
  4. Create a goal or choose a task from Google Tasks.
  5. Choose a sound, and decide whether Do Not Disturb while in Focus should be on or off.
  6. Select Start.

When the session is running, a timer shows how much time remains. Google says you can extend the session if you need more time. Starting another session automatically reuses your previous Focus settings.

What Focus mode actually does

Focus is a configurable session rather than a simple countdown. Its options are designed to keep the work period in one place:

  • Timer: Choose how long the session should last.
  • Goal or task: Enter a goal or select an existing item from Google Tasks.
  • Do Not Disturb: Notifications are suppressed by default while Focus is active, but you can switch this behavior off in the Focus settings.
  • Sound: Select one of ChromeOS’s available Focus Sounds or, where supported, a music-service option.

Can Focus mode turn on Do Not Disturb?

Yes. ChromeOS turns on Do Not Disturb by default when a Focus session starts. In the Focus setup panel, use the Do Not Disturb while in Focus control to leave it enabled or turn it off for that session.

Which sounds are available?

The current Chromebook Help instructions list four built-in Focus Sounds categories:

Option What it provides
Nature Nature-themed background audio
Ambiance Ambient background audio
Classical Classical music selections
Flow A curated flow-oriented sound option

These are curated ChromeOS choices, so they do not require installing a separate focus app.

Does Chromebook Focus mode play music?

Google’s October 2024 announcement described choosing a soundscape or a YouTube Music playlist. That announcement said the YouTube Music functionality was “coming soon” and required YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium. The current Chromebook Help instructions document Focus Sounds, but they do not establish that YouTube Music playlists are available on every Chromebook, account or region today. Treat playlist support as setup-dependent rather than a universal ChromeOS feature.

What happens on a school or work Chromebook?

Administrators can control Focus Mode sounds through ChromeOS management policy. Google’s administrator documentation describes settings for allowing all sounds, allowing no sounds or allowing only a limited set of music; the documented default is all sounds. If sound choices are missing on a managed Chromebook, the restriction may come from your organization rather than from a fault in Focus mode.

Availability and accessibility context

Google’s current Help documentation provides Chromebook instructions but does not publish a complete matrix covering every ChromeOS version, device, account type or region. Therefore, the presence or exact options can vary by managed configuration and rollout status.

Google for Education lists Focus mode among Chromebook cognitive accessibility features, describing it as a way to reduce distractions and adjust focus time. That positioning does not mean Focus mode is a medical treatment or that Google has published a measured health or productivity outcome for it.
