A separate Chrome profile is the better choice for keeping an unwanted extension out of a browsing setup. Incognito is a temporary mode within an existing profile, and an extension can still run there if its Allow in Incognito permission is enabled. If an allowed extension runs in Incognito, it can access URLs and website contents just as it can during regular browsing.
What is the difference?
A Chrome profile is a distinct browser setup. Chromium describes profiles as separate data directories that can be launched independently, and Chrome applies extension install-type controls at the profile level. That gives a separate profile a meaningful boundary from the extensions in your everyday profile.
Incognito is not a second profile or an extension-free browser. It is a temporary browsing mode within the profile you already use. Google provides a per-extension Allow in Incognito setting, so an extension installed in that profile may be permitted to run in Incognito too.

Why Incognito does not quarantine extensions
Incognito changes the browsing mode, but it does not automatically remove an extension’s ability to run. Google lets you grant that permission to an individual extension. Chromium’s Extensions Security FAQ explains the consequence: “In this scenario, the extension has access to all the types of data it does in normal browsing – such as URLs and the contents of websites. Chrome does not limit what an extension does with this data.”

That distinction matters if your concern is an extension that can observe pages, rather than whether Chrome keeps a regular browsing-history record. An Incognito window is not a safe place to open a sensitive page merely because the window is private. If an extension is allowed to run there, it may have access to the page and its URL.
How to check whether an extension can run in Incognito
- Open a new Incognito window.
- In the address bar, go to
chrome://extensions. - Select the extension you want to check, then open Details.
- Inspect Allow in Incognito. If it is enabled and you do not want the extension to run in Incognito, turn it off.
Repeat the check for each extension you are concerned about. This is a per-extension permission, so checking one extension does not establish the setting for the others. If an extension is unfamiliar or unwanted, review it in chrome://extensions and remove it rather than relying only on Incognito.

When a separate profile is the better boundary
Use a dedicated profile when you want a persistent browsing setup that does not inherit the extensions you use every day. For example, keep one profile for ordinary browsing and use another for work, banking, or extension testing. Chromium’s profile model gives each profile a separate data directory, while extension installation controls operate at the profile level.

- Open Chrome’s profile menu and add a separate profile. The wording and appearance of the menu may vary by Chrome version.
- Use the new profile for the activity you want to separate, and avoid installing or enabling the unwanted extension in it.
- Before relying on that setup, open
chrome://extensionsin the new profile and check which extensions are present there.
The important check is the extension list in the profile you will actually use. A separate profile is a stronger boundary than Incognito, but it is not a reason to assume that a particular profile is extension-free: review its installed extensions directly. On an enterprise-managed device, profile-level policies may control extensions, and the user may not be able to override them.

What extension behavior changes in Incognito?
Chromium documents two ways an extension can operate across regular and Incognito browsing: spanning and split modes. The mode affects how the extension’s Incognito execution is arranged; it does not turn Incognito permission into a data-access restriction. If you permit an extension to run there, do not assume that one mode prevents it from seeing page data.
There is also a specific storage detail: Chromium says chrome.storage.sync and chrome.storage.local are always shared between regular and Incognito processes. So Incognito does not necessarily mean a separate extension-storage space. The key decision remains whether the extension is allowed to run in the first place.

Choose the right setup for your goal
- Keep an unwanted extension away from a particular activity: use a separate profile and verify its extension list.
- Use Incognito for a short private session: check Allow in Incognito for every extension you do not want running there.
- Remove an extension you do not trust: review and remove it in
chrome://extensionsinstead of treating Incognito as protection. - Use a managed work or school browser: recognize that administrator policies may govern profile-level extension installation and may not be changeable by you.
In short, Incognito is a browsing mode with a per-extension permission switch; a separate profile is the more suitable tool for maintaining a distinct extension setup.
