There isn’t one Chrome flag that fixes every blurry Headless screenshot. First determine whether the problem is incorrect image scale, a fallback font captured before the web font is ready, or platform-specific text rasterization. Then compare captures with the viewport, device scale factor, font, operating system, and Chrome version held constant.

Identify what “blurry” means in your screenshot

Different symptoms point to different causes. Treat these as diagnostic clues, not a universal Chrome classification:

  • Text looks soft or has the wrong physical size: check CSS viewport dimensions, PNG pixel dimensions, and device scale factor before editing the image.
  • Letter shapes or spacing differ from the page in a regular browser: check which typeface Chrome actually rendered and whether the intended web font was ready at capture time.
  • Text is pale or washed out, while its size and typeface look right: compare the operating system and Chrome version. Text rasterization and contrast can vary by platform.

Keep the original PNG while investigating. Resizing it afterward can soften text and obscure whether the cause was browser-side geometry or rasterization.

Lock the screenshot dimensions and scale

For a command-line baseline, set a fixed viewport with --window-size. Chrome’s documented example is:

The viewport setting controls the screenshot’s viewport dimensions. The current Headless virtual screen can also be configured independently of the physical display, including its device scale factor. Chrome’s screen-configuration documentation says this functionality is available in stable Chrome starting with version 142: Headless screen configuration.

Start with a device scale factor of 1 as a comparison baseline, then test the factor your application needs. If you use --force-device-scale-factor, compare captures at 1 and at the intended value. Check both the PNG’s pixel dimensions and the page’s window.devicePixelRatio; the factor affects screenshot scaling as well as browser APIs and media queries. A Chromium issue filed for ChromeDriver on Mac documents this behavior, but it was marked “Won’t fix (Intended behavior),” so it is not evidence that changing the factor universally improves font quality.

For current Headless screen configuration, follow the Chrome documentation for the Chrome build you run. Do not assume that a physical monitor’s resolution or scaling automatically defines the virtual screen.

Check the font Chrome actually rendered

A CSS declaration such as font-family: "Example Sans", sans-serif describes an ordered font stack; it does not prove that Chrome used “Example Sans.” In Chrome DevTools, inspect the selected text’s rendered font to see which typeface the text-rendering layer chose and whether it came from a web font or a fallback. See Chrome DevTools: inspect fonts.

  1. Open the page in Chrome and inspect the text element.
  2. Use DevTools’ rendered-font information to identify the selected face.
  3. If the expected web font is missing, check that its request succeeds and that the expected weight or style is available.
  4. Capture again only after your application confirms the required font is ready.

Do not treat network-idle as proof that a particular face has loaded. Chrome’s Headless documentation includes a Puppeteer navigation example using waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but network-idle alone does not guarantee that every page’s fonts are ready at screenshot time. Use an application-level readiness condition and verify the rendered face.

Account for font-display and early captures

With CSS font-display values such as swap, optional, and fallback, text can appear in a system font while the custom face is unavailable. If the custom font replaces that fallback later, glyph shapes and metrics can change. Chrome Lighthouse discusses these modes in its guidance on font-display.

In command-line captures, --timeout limits how long Chrome waits before taking the screenshot. The Chrome documentation shows --timeout=5000 as an example, not a recommended universal delay. A capture made too early can show incomplete page content or a fallback font. Set a wait appropriate to the page, and prefer a condition tied to the font or content you need rather than relying on a fixed delay alone.

Compare operating systems and Chrome versions

If the screenshot has the right dimensions and the correct font but text still looks washed out, compare the same page, viewport, scale factor, and Chrome version across the relevant operating systems. Chrome’s explanation of Windows text rendering says Chromium uses Skia for final text rasterization and discusses how contrast and gamma settings affected perceptions of washed-out text. It also says a revised default contrast value began in Windows builds starting with Chrome 132. That is a Windows-specific, version-scoped change—not a general Linux or macOS setting to copy into launch options. See Chrome’s Windows font-rendering explanation.

Also record whether you are using current Headless Chrome or the old Headless Shell implementation. Chrome documents both, and a comparison between different implementations may not isolate a font-rendering change. See Chrome Headless documentation.

Use a controlled comparison to isolate the cause

Capture the same page repeatedly while changing one variable at a time. Record:

  • CSS viewport and resulting PNG pixel dimensions
  • Device scale factor and window.devicePixelRatio
  • The actual rendered font and whether the expected font request completed
  • Operating system and exact Chrome build
  • Current Headless or old Headless Shell
  • Capture library or command-line options, including waits and timeout

If the issue occurs on only one platform after those variables are controlled, file a reproducible report with the relevant Chromium or Puppeteer project. Include the capture code, page conditions, and the recorded environment rather than describing the result only as “blurry.”

Avoid unsupported font-sharpness fixes

Do not add --disable-gpu as a general text-quality fix. Chrome’s Headless FAQ describes it as a historical temporary workaround for certain Windows issues, not as a font-rendering control; the older FAQ says other platforms no longer require it. Likewise, forcing GPU rasterization or changing CSS text-shadow or font-weight without evidence can change the page without correcting the cause.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot without managing a Headless browser environment, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the API supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output.

Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Chrome Headless have a universal flag to make screenshot text sharper?

No. The right fix depends on whether the cause is image scale, font loading or selection, or platform-specific rasterization.

Does network-idle guarantee that a web font is ready for a screenshot?

No. Verify the rendered face or use an application-level readiness condition for the font you need.
