To make Chrome easier to organize across devices, set up account sync, use tab groups, and run Safety Check. On iPhone, you can also move the address bar to the bottom. These options are not identical on Android and iOS, and syncing requires signing in to the same Google Account. Here’s where to find each setting and what to know before changing it.
1. Sign in and choose what Chrome saves
Signing in to Chrome lets you access selected information saved to your Google Account on other devices signed in to that account. Google lists bookmarks, passwords, Reading List, payment information, identity and contact details, settings, and preferences among the information that may be saved. You can choose what to save and sync, so signing in does not mean every category is necessarily synced. Google’s Android sync guide also covers syncing tabs and browsing history. After signing in, review Chrome’s sync and account controls and select the categories you want associated with your Google Account. Consider what information you want available on other devices before enabling it.
Optional passphrase on Android
Chrome’s Android documentation describes an optional custom passphrase for synced Chrome data. Google says it cannot read Chrome data protected by that passphrase. It comes with trade-offs: you must enter it on signed-in devices, browsing-based feed suggestions are unavailable, saved passwords cannot be checked at passwords.google.com or used with Smart Lock for Passwords, and all history will not be saved to your Google Account. The passphrase does not encrypt payment methods or addresses from Google Wallet. Details are in Google’s Android sync documentation.

2. Group tabs by task
Tab groups give related pages a shared name and color, making a set of open tabs easier to find than a crowded tab strip. For example, put pages for a trip or a home project in a group with a clear label.
Android
In Chrome, open the tab switcher and use its group controls to select tabs and create a group; you can name and color it. The Android tab switcher also supports searching tabs and groups and bulk actions. Google says group changes sync across devices signed in to the same Google Account. That shared state has consequences: deleting a group removes it on the other devices using the account, while ungrouping deletes the group on those devices even though its individual tabs stay open on the local device. iPhone and iPad
Open the tab grid, select tabs, and use the group option to create a named, colored group. Chrome can sync group changes across devices signed in to the same Google Account. If you prefer not to have groups from other devices open automatically, Google’s iPhone and iPad tab guide describes how to turn off that behavior. The iOS tab grid also lets you bookmark a tab or add it to Reading List, and includes an Inactive Tabs section.
3. Run Safety Check
Safety Check reviews specific account and browser conditions; it is a useful review, not a guarantee that every threat or unsafe site will be found.

iPhone and iPad
- Open Chrome and tap the menu, then tap Settings.
- Tap Safety check, then Check now.
- Review any findings about compromised, reused, or weak passwords, Safe Browsing status, and available Chrome updates.
Chrome may also notify you when it finds an issue. Google documents these checks in its iPhone and iPad safety guide.
Android
Open Chrome’s settings and choose Safety Check to review the checks available on your device, including password issues, Safe Browsing status, and Chrome updates. Google describes the feature in its Android safety guide.

4. Prefer secure connections, with the right expectations
Chrome’s Always use secure connections setting attempts to use HTTPS and warns you before loading a site that does not support it. HTTPS provides a more secure connection than HTTP, but it does not prove a site is trustworthy or remove other risks.
iPhone and iPad
Find the option in Chrome’s security settings. Google’s iOS safety guide describes Chrome attempting to load sites over HTTPS and warning before visiting sites that do not support it.

Android
In Chrome’s security settings, you can choose whether to receive warnings for public sites or for public and private sites. The latter can include a company intranet. Chrome upgrades URLs to HTTPS where possible. Google also says Secure DNS is on by default in automatic mode; if Chrome has trouble resolving a site in that mode, it may fall back to an unencrypted lookup. See the Android safety guide.
5. Move the address bar on iPhone
On iPhone, Chrome lets you choose whether the address bar appears at the top or bottom in portrait orientation. You can change the position in Chrome Settings or touch and hold the bar to move it. In landscape orientation, it remains at the top. The setting can sync between iPhone and iPad when Settings sync is on. This is an iPhone and iPad option, not an Android instruction.
