For republishing an article from a live URL, Medium’s built-in Import a story tool is the simplest documented option: it creates an editable draft, backdates it to the original publication date, and automatically adds a canonical link to the source. Use a Chrome extension only when it addresses a specific transfer or formatting need, and check its permissions and the resulting draft yourself.

When to use Medium’s importer
Choose the built-in tool when the article is already published at a URL and you want Medium to handle the initial transfer and canonical link. The importer is designed to put the content into a draft rather than publish it immediately, leaving you a chance to review the result. Medium’s guidance says the original publication date is retained through backdating.
Medium states that imported stories automatically apply a canonical URL referencing the original source material. A canonical link tells search engines which URL should be treated as the preferred version; it is not a quantified guarantee of search ranking or traffic. When a Chrome extension may help
An extension can be worth considering if you have a concrete transfer problem the importer does not solve—for example, preserving code formatting from a technical post. Poneglyph’s Chrome Web Store listing describes transferring an open article to a Medium draft and claims to preserve code, images, headings, lists, and captions. The listing could not be independently verified, so treat those as the developer’s stated features rather than established performance.

Do not generalize from one extension to all Chrome extensions. Before installing one, review its developer details and requested access. Google documents how to inspect or change extension access, including whether an extension can read and change data on the current site or on all sites, in Chrome Help. If you proceed, inspect the imported draft for missing content and confirm its canonical destination yourself.

A safe publishing workflow
- Confirm republication rights. Medium says you may import content from other sites only when you have the rights to republish it. You can import your own blog when you hold those rights. See Medium’s Import a story guidance and import troubleshooting.
- For a normal article URL, use Medium’s tool. In Medium, open Stories → Import a story, paste the article URL, and import it. Review and edit the resulting draft before publishing. Medium Help Center
- Check the canonical destination. With Medium’s importer, Medium says this is applied automatically. If you use an extension or manual copying, inspect the story settings and set the original article as the canonical URL if appropriate. Medium says only the story’s author can set a canonical link and explains how to check the published page source. Medium Help Center
- Review the whole draft. Check headings, links, code, images, captions, and embeds. Correct or restore anything that did not transfer before publishing.
- If the import fails, switch to manual recovery. Medium recommends copying the content into a new draft, restoring missing media, formatting it, and optionally setting a canonical link. Medium Help Center
