If a Chromatic build is stuck in progress, first check how long it has been running. Chromatic says it automatically cancels a build that remains stuck for two hours. If it is still in progress after that, contact Chromatic support at support@chromatic.com or use the in-app chat. Before escalating, compare the Chromatic build page with the CI run that launched it; that helps you see which step is still active without guessing at a cause.

What to do first

  1. Check the elapsed time. If the build has been stuck for less than two hours, Chromatic’s published guidance is to allow time for its automatic cancellation. The FAQ does not document a separate immediate manual-cancel procedure.
  2. Open the Chromatic build page and the CI run. Compare their statuses and timestamps. The CI step may still be running, or the CI workflow may have completed while the Chromatic page still shows an in-progress build.
  3. Inspect the CI step logs. Look for whether the Chromatic command or action completed, failed, or is still executing. Save the workflow run URL and relevant log output for support if you need to escalate.
  4. Compare your workflow with the official setup. Verify that the repository is checked out, dependencies are installed, and the Chromatic project token is available to the workflow as a secret. Storybook’s publishing example uses a full-history checkout (`fetch-depth: 0`) and the Chromatic action; these are configuration details to compare, not a guaranteed fix for every stuck build. See Storybook’s publishing guide and its GitHub Actions example.
  5. Escalate if it passes two hours. Contact support@chromatic.com or use Chromatic’s in-app chat. Include the build URL, approximate start time, CI provider, workflow run link, and relevant logs.

Use the two status pages to locate the stalled step

Chromatic’s CLI and GitHub Action publish a Storybook to Chromatic and can initiate tests when those tests are enabled. The CI run shows what happened in the workflow; the Chromatic build page shows the hosted build’s status. Neither view alone proves the root cause, so compare both before deciding whether the job is still working or needs escalation. See Storybook’s Chromatic integration documentation.

What you see What to check next
CI run is still active Inspect the running Chromatic step and its latest logs; determine whether the workflow is progressing or waiting.
CI run completed, Chromatic still says in progress Record both statuses and links, then check the elapsed time. If the Chromatic build remains stuck beyond two hours, contact Chromatic.
CI run failed Read the failing step’s logs first. A CI failure and a Chromatic build still marked in progress are separate observations; the status alone does not establish why they differ.
A separate Storybook test-runner job is active Check that job independently. Storybook’s test runner can run locally or in CI, while Chromatic is a cloud service for visual and component tests integrated with a git provider. The test-runner job’s state is not the same as the Chromatic build status; see the test-runner documentation.

Check the workflow configuration

Use the published setup as a reference rather than changing settings at random. Confirm the basics below against your workflow and the relevant logs:

  • The Chromatic project token is configured as a CI secret and exposed to the publishing step.
  • The workflow checks out the repository and installs the project’s dependencies before publishing.
  • The workflow uses a supported combination of platform, Node.js, and Storybook. Storybook’s integration page lists the latest LTS Ubuntu, Windows Server, and macOS versions; Node.js Current, Active, or Maintenance (LTS) releases; and Storybook 6.5 or later as supported. Other combinations may work but are not officially supported, and feature availability can vary by platform and version. Check the live compatibility information before making version-specific changes.
  • You are checking the Chromatic publish/build step, not assuming that a separate test-runner job controls the Chromatic status. Storybook’s test-runner CI recipe includes a 60-minute job timeout in its example; that is the example job’s timeout, not Chromatic’s two-hour automatic-cancellation threshold.

When to contact Chromatic

Chromatic’s FAQ says a build stuck in progress is automatically cancelled after two hours. If the build remains in progress beyond that point, use support@chromatic.com or Chromatic’s in-app chat. Provide the build URL, start-time estimate, CI provider, workflow run URL, and logs so support can investigate the specific run. The published guidance gives this timeout and escalation route; it does not identify one universal cause for stuck builds.

Chromatic build troubleshooting is about the CI workflow and Chromatic’s build status. If you also need screenshots of the published Storybook page for a separate visual check, a screenshot API can capture a URL without setting up browser automation yourself. ScreenshotNeo is one option: it removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; and an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
