Christa Pike’s attorneys said she was unconscious and on a ventilator in a hospital as of Friday, October 2, 2026, after Tennessee’s September 30 attempt to execute her. The Associated Press reported that she was in critical condition and receiving lifesaving care, citing the attorneys’ court filing. The latest account available here does not establish whether her condition has changed since then.

What was reported about Pike’s condition?

On October 2, Pike’s attorneys said she remained unconscious and was receiving ventilator support in a hospital. The AP reported that hospital staff were providing lifesaving care. Those reports were attributed to her attorneys and their court filing; the Tennessee Department of Correction’s public statement did not describe her condition in detail.

What happened during the September 30 execution attempt?

AP’s eyewitness account reported that Pike continued breathing after two injections. Tennessee’s protocol called for a second round of pentobarbital if an inmate was not deceased after the first round. This was one execution attempt involving two injections—not two separate execution attempts.

Afterward, the Tennessee Department of Correction said it had followed the state’s established execution protocol and transported Pike to an off-site medical facility. The department did not explain why she survived the attempt.

What is known—and not known—about the IV problem?

Pike’s attorneys alleged that IV-line problems prevented the pentobarbital from entering her bloodstream and that the state administered a second dose without correcting the problem. They also reported injuries to her arms. In a court filing reproduced by AP, the attorneys wrote: “Apparently at no point did any member of the execution team realize that the IV lines were not correctly placed or that the veins had blown and that the pentobarbital was, in whole or in part, entering Ms. Pike’s body.”

That is counsel’s account, not an established investigative finding. AP reported that state officials had not explained the failure in the accounts available by October 2. The evidence described in those reports does not settle the cause of the failed injections.

What has Tennessee done since the attempt?

On October 2, AP reported that Gov. Bill Lee paused executions and ordered an independent investigation. AP described Pike’s case as Tennessee’s second unsuccessful execution attempt in four months. The reporting available here contains no completed investigation or findings, so the cause remains unresolved.

For broader context, AP reported that Tennessee had carried out four of more than 140 executions nationwide since 2022, citing the Death Penalty Information Center. That comparison is AP’s reporting of DPIC figures.

How does Pike’s court case fit in?

A U.S. Supreme Court filing dated September 28, before the execution attempt, described Pike’s challenge to Tennessee’s lethal-injection protocol and said underlying litigation remained pending at that time. Because the filing predates September 30, it does not establish her later medical condition or explain what happened during the attempt.
