Can you replay a WoW fight from another camera angle?
Not with the capability documented for WoW Recorder. Its project description is about recorded encounter videos viewed through a replay interface, not a simulation that reconstructs the encounter and lets you place a free camera afterward. You can watch what happened; you should not promise that you can re-film the same event from an arbitrary angle.

That difference matters for planning. If a shot must exist later, record it while the game is running, or stage a repeatable scene. A recorded file contains the pixels, audio and camera view that were captured. It does not automatically retain every hidden game state, actor position or timing detail needed to render a new viewpoint.
Use WoW Recorder when your priority is preserving an unplanned encounter for review. Choose OBS when your priority is a deliberate machinima take. If you need a new angle on a boss mechanic, the dependable options are to repeat the encounter, arrange a controlled scene, or create a separate asset-based shot in WoW Model Viewer.
Which tool should you use for each machinima job?
Choose according to what is being manipulated: live camera settings, recorded screen pixels, separate game assets or an edited timeline. The tools complement one another rather than replacing one another.

WoW Recorder is the narrowest choice in this group. It saves encounter video and provides a replay-viewing user interface, which is useful when you need to inspect an event that was not staged in advance. Its documented role does not establish retrospective free-camera control, editable actor paths or a way to render the encounter again.
For machinima, treat its output as reference or archival footage. You can identify a moment to recreate, study the timing of a fight, or decide which performance should be captured again with OBS. Do not describe the result as a 3D replay that can be filmed from any angle.

OBS Studio: the general-purpose recorder
OBS Studio records what appears on your screen and can preserve separate audio tracks for later editing. It does not control WoW’s camera, so camera composition must come from the game, an add-on, or a separate asset tool.
The OBS recording guide recommends MKV: if recording stops unexpectedly, MKV is less likely to corrupt the entire file because it does not require a graceful stop in the same way. OBS can remux an MKV recording to MP4 afterward when your editor or delivery workflow requires MP4. Keep that distinction clear: remuxing changes the container, not the captured viewpoint.

DynamicCam works while your character is in the game. Its project description says it “automates camera transitions (and settings) between the many different ‘situations’ that your character can find themselves in.” In practice, that means situation-specific zoom, rotation, view changes and shoulder offsets can happen during the take.
It is a camera-direction aid, not a post-production timeline and not evidence of a free-camera replay. Build or select the intended behavior, run the scene, and let OBS capture the resulting view. CurseForge listed DynamicCam as updated October 20, 2026; that listing date does not prove identical behavior on every Retail or Classic client, so check the add-on and your exact client combination.

WoW Model Viewer is documented as “a free Windows program for viewing the 3D models of World of Warcraft from your own game installation.” It reads a locally installed client, lets you inspect models and animations, and can export images and OBJ files.
This is useful for titles, turntables, reference renders or a shot that would be difficult to stage in a live zone. It is separate from filming the live game world: an OBJ export is not a recorded encounter, and an animation preview is not proof that the same scene can be reconstructed in WoW. The project’s version-1.1 documentation describes OBJ support but not FBX export, and notes that the earlier bundled Blender add-on installer is no longer included. The documented requirements and asset-use permissions should be checked before you build a production around an export.
DaVinci Resolve 21: assemble and finish
DaVinci Resolve 21 combines editing, effects, color and audio. Its free and Studio editions do not have identical capabilities, but the free edition is a practical starting point for cutting recorded WoW footage; do not imply that Studio is required for a first film.
Resolve is where you trim takes, synchronize dialogue and music, build titles, correct color, mix tracks and render a delivery file. It cannot recover a camera angle that OBS never captured. Plan coverage in the game first, then use Resolve to shape the material you actually recorded.

How do you record a planned WoW machinima scene?
Prepare the scene and camera before recording. You need the intended WoW client, any compatible add-ons, OBS Studio, enough storage for source footage, and a Resolve project if you will edit immediately.
- Define the shot. Write down the subject, framing, movement, dialogue and approximate duration. Decide whether the camera must change automatically, remain character-focused, or be created from a separate model.
- Choose the live presentation tool. Use DynamicCam for situation-based camera transitions and offsets. Use Narcissus when a clean character presentation and clutter controls matter. If the shot is asset-based rather than a live-world performance, plan it in WoW Model Viewer instead.
- Configure the game scene. Install only add-ons that match the exact Retail or Classic client you use, then configure the intended view, UI visibility and character position. Make a short rehearsal to catch an unexpected nameplate, chat bubble or camera transition before the real take.
- Set up OBS recording. Select the WoW display or window source, choose an encoder and frame settings appropriate to your system, and decide whether separate audio tracks will help the edit. OBS’s guide recommends MKV for resilience during an interrupted recording.
- Record the take. Start OBS before the action, perform the scene, and leave a few seconds of clean lead-in and tail. If the scene depends on a camera transition, allow it to complete rather than cutting immediately at the trigger.
- Protect and remux the source. Keep the original MKV. When your editor or delivery specification calls for MP4, use OBS’s remux function; do not delete the source until the converted file opens correctly.
- Finish in Resolve. Import the video and audio, synchronize tracks, cut alternate takes, add titles and effects, correct color and mix dialogue, music and effects. Render a review file before making a final delivery export.
For programmable recording controls, a keyboard macro or a hardware controller can trigger OBS actions, but a control surface does not create a replay camera. Keep that purchase decision separate from camera and editing requirements.
How should you handle an unplanned encounter?
Use WoW Recorder when the primary goal is to save and review what happened, and use OBS when you need a general-purpose film capture. These are complementary choices, not interchangeable replay systems.
- Capture or preserve the encounter with the tool that matches your priority: WoW Recorder for its encounter-oriented replay view, OBS for a conventional video file and audio control.
- Review the saved material to find timing, performances and visual beats worth recreating.
- Stage a repeat of the important moment with DynamicCam, Narcissus or a conventional in-game camera, then record the planned angle with OBS.
- Use Resolve to combine the staged coverage with any clearly labeled reference material, taking care not to imply that a reference replay was rendered from a new viewpoint.
Do you need WoW Model Viewer or OBS?
They solve different problems. OBS captures a live screen and its associated audio; WoW Model Viewer inspects assets from a local Windows installation and can produce separate model or animation imagery. You need OBS for live gameplay footage. Add Model Viewer only when an asset-based shot, export or animation inspection is part of the plan.

What should you check before installing or upgrading?
- Client variant: Retail and Classic can differ in add-on behavior. A listing update date is not a guarantee that every feature works identically in your client.
- Operating system: WoW Model Viewer’s documented target is Windows. Do not assume its local-client workflow exists on another operating system.
- File safety: Record to MKV when possible, retain the original, and remux only after the recording is safely closed.
- Audio design: Separate OBS tracks make dialogue, music and game sound easier to rebalance in Resolve, but they do not repair audio that was never captured.
- Camera expectations: DynamicCam and Narcissus act during staging. Neither is documented as a retrospective camera editor.

What does a physical controller add?
