China’s BEST fusion facility in Hefei has reportedly passed the halfway point in assembly, but the milestone is construction progress—not evidence that the reactor has achieved net energy gain or is supplying electricity. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) says BEST is intended to demonstrate net fusion power gain and fusion-based electricity generation around 2030. That is a project target, not a guarantee.
What is China’s “artificial sun” BEST project?
BEST stands for Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak. It is an experimental fusion facility under construction in Hefei, Anhui, designed to move China’s fusion programme from basic research toward engineering and a power-generation demonstration. CAS describes it as one of the country’s major controlled-fusion projects.
The “artificial sun” label is informal. It refers to the effort to study fusion under controlled conditions; BEST is not a miniature star, a conventional nuclear fission plant, or a power station already producing electricity.
What does the halfway milestone mean?
A secondary report dated October 1, 2026, says BEST’s assembly has passed the halfway point and the facility complex has been handed over for use. The exact percentage has not been confirmed in the available CAS material, so the halfway figure is best treated as reported progress rather than an official, independently established completion measurement.
#1 Best Overall
- Exquisite Appearance: This is a simple MK1 Arc Reactor model with an integrated blue LED light that emits an impressive glow, whether during the day or at night.
- Disassembled Kit: This reactor comes as a DIY assembly kit with a detailed instruction to ensure you can successfully complete the assembly.
- Complete Accessories: Including a USB power cable with a switch and a simple acrylic stand. Additionally, essential components come with spares for replacement in case of damage during assembly.
- Home Decor Piece: Used for various creative projects, such as computer case modifications, electric vehicle lighting upgrades, or as a unique nightlight or desk decoration. Arouse your creativity and imagination to personalize your decor.
- Notes: Glue is required (Not Included) during the assembly process. You will also need to provide your own 5V USB charging adapter, or you can power it by connecting to a power bank or computer.
In practical terms, the report indicates that construction and assembly have advanced substantially. It does not establish that the tokamak is operating, that it has sustained a fusion plasma, or that it has produced more fusion energy than the energy used to run the experiment.
When might BEST generate electricity?
CAS said on January 19, 2026, that the project hopes to demonstrate net fusion power gain and electricity generation around 2030. “Around 2030” describes an intended demonstration schedule. It does not mean BEST is currently generating power, nor does it establish when a commercial fusion plant might operate.

- Fun and easy to build 54-piece model kit, snaps together in about an hour
- Wings open to “attack” mode and close
- Detailed cockpit with opening canopy
- Affixes to an included detailed display stand
- Recommended for children ages 8 years and up
Fusion power gain and electricity delivered to the grid are different milestones. A demonstration of net fusion power gain would concern the fusion reaction’s energy output relative to the relevant input measure; generating usable electricity also requires the equipment and systems to convert and deliver energy. The available project statements describe a planned demonstration, not a report of BEST supplying grid electricity.
How does BEST compare with EAST?
EAST—the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak—is the earlier operating device in Hefei that is commonly called China’s “artificial sun.” Its experimental plasma results provide a research foundation for later engineering efforts, but a plasma-duration record is not a reactor energy-gain result.
Rank #3
- Luminous DIY Arc Reactor Model: This DIY assembly kit features a bright blue LED light. The finished MK1 Arc Reactor emits an impressive glow, making it a standout piece for desk decorations or computer case modifications
- Engaging DIY Assembly Kit: The arc reactor model comes as a disassembled kit with detailed instructions. Enjoy the hands-on building experience, with spare essential components included for a successful assembly
- USB-Powered with Acrylic Stand: Includes a USB power cable with a convenient on/off switch and a clear acrylic display stand. Easily power the light-up reactor via any 5V adapter, power bank, or computer
- Versatile Creative Decor: Perfect as a unique nightlight or for various projects like electric vehicle lighting upgrades. This LED arc reactor kit sparks creativity, allowing you to personalize your space
- Assembly & Power Requirements: Glue is required (not included) for assembly. The MK1 reactor model requires a standard 5V USB charging adapter (not included) to illuminate the blue light
| Measure | BEST | EAST |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Engineering project intended to pursue net fusion power gain and demonstrate fusion-based electricity generation. | Experimental device used for plasma research. |
| Status | Under construction; a secondary report dated October 1, 2026, says assembly passed halfway. | Operating experimental tokamak. |
| Reported milestone | Planned net-gain and electricity demonstration around 2030; this is a target, not an achieved result. | CAS reported 1,066 seconds of high-confinement plasma at 100 million degrees Celsius on January 20, 2025. The record was recognized in China’s 2025 science-and-technology advances list in 2026. |
Why EAST’s record matters—and what it cannot prove
A tokamak uses magnetic fields to confine extremely hot plasma so researchers can study fusion reactions. Maintaining controlled plasma for a long period is relevant to future fusion systems, which must manage plasma conditions as well as heat, particles, magnetic fields and neutron loads.
EAST’s reported 1,066-second result shows progress in sustaining high-confinement plasma under the reported experimental conditions. It does not show that EAST—or BEST—has achieved net energy gain or produced commercial electricity. Those are separate engineering and performance questions.

- An import from Aoshima
- From the classic film series
- Gull wing doors are functional and can be opened and closed even after assembly
- Includes a same-scale Hoverboard and detail-up parts
- Finished model measures approximately 184mm in length
What to watch next
The halfway assembly report is a construction update. To assess whether BEST is moving from construction toward its stated demonstration goal, look for official updates that distinguish among machine completion, commissioning, plasma operation, net fusion power gain and electricity generation. Those are different stages; progress at one does not by itself establish success at the next.
