The announcements point to an effort to organize training around technical and support specialties, but they do not establish what students will study in detail or whether the schools will produce particular battlefield capabilities.
What is China’s new drone and robotics college?
The PLA Army Engineering University established its College of Unmanned and Intelligent Engineering on September 30, 2026, according to a South China Morning Post report published October 2, 2026. Its name links the institution to unmanned systems and intelligent engineering, but the announcement does not say whether its teaching will focus on drone operation, autonomous systems, robotics design, or military doctrine.
The college was one of three established at the university that day. The other two are the College of Combat Support NCOs and the College of Equipment Support NCOs. NCO means non-commissioned officer, a military rank category below commissioned officers.
What other military colleges were announced?
Army Engineering University
The three colleges announced at the Army Engineering University cover unmanned and intelligent engineering, combat support NCOs, and equipment support NCOs. The report presents these as organizational and training developments; it does not provide student numbers, budgets, equipment lists, or outcome measures for them.

National Defence University
The PLA’s National Defence University inaugurated its College of Discipline Inspection, Law and Politics at its Xi’an campus in Shaanxi on September 30, 2026, the SCMP reported. This is a separate institution and subject area from the unmanned engineering college.
Joint Logistics Support Force Engineering University
The PLA Joint Logistics Support Force Engineering University announced four colleges and one institute under its umbrella. The accessible SCMP report does not identify their names or functions, so their remit cannot be reliably compared with the unmanned engineering college.

What will PLA students learn about unmanned systems?
The published announcement does not specify a curriculum, admissions quota, faculty, training equipment, or whether the college will teach practical operation, engineering, autonomy, or doctrine. Its name supports describing its broad subject area as unmanned and intelligent engineering; it is not evidence of particular courses or a demonstrated operational capability.
The SCMP frames the new institutions as part of training specialists in high technology and discipline inspection as the PLA pursues centennial modernization goals. That is the report’s characterization of the purpose, not evidence that the colleges have already improved military performance.

How do the announcements fit into PLA education changes?
In May 2025, China’s Ministry of National Defense said the Central Military Commission had decided to reorganize three higher-education institutions: the Army Branches University in Hefei, the Information Support Force Engineering University in Wuhan, and the Joint Logistics Support Force Engineering University in Chongqing. The ministry said the institutions were formed from existing academies and would recruit high-school graduates. This provides institutional context, but does not describe the new unmanned college’s curriculum.
In June 2026, the ministry said 22 military academies planned to recruit about 17,500 high-school graduates that year and described continued training in emerging technology fields. That figure is for the academies collectively, not an intake target for the College of Unmanned and Intelligent Engineering.
A July 2026 article in China Military Online discussed coordinating military forces and exploring applications for unmanned equipment. It offers broader policy context, not details about what the new college will teach. Separately, China’s 2026 civilian undergraduate catalog included fields such as future robotics and agricultural robotics; those civilian programs should not be mistaken for PLA courses.
