ICBC has the marginally stronger documented 2024 income profile because its ordinary-share payout percentage was slightly higher and it published separate A-share and H-share yield calculations. China Construction Bank (CCB) remains a substantial income candidate, with a 30% payout policy and a large cash distribution. The better choice for you can change with the exact listing price, investor taxes, currency conversion, liquidity and whether your broker provides A-share or H-share access.
The comparison below uses each bank’s 2024 disclosures. Those figures describe the 2024 distribution, not a guaranteed 2026 yield or future dividend. Share prices move daily, and neither bank’s historical payout ratio guarantees the next payment.
2024 dividend comparison at a glance
The most comparable disclosed figures are the cash paid for 2024, the amount distributed in total and each bank’s stated payout measure. ICBC reports a percentage for ordinary shares, while CCB reports a payout ratio. Treat the percentages as close but not perfectly identical accounting labels.
| Measure | China Construction Bank (CCB) | Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) | Source and period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-year cash dividend per share | RMB0.403 | RMB0.308, expressed officially as RMB3.080 per ten shares | 2024 distribution |
| Final dividend component | RMB0.206 per share | Not stated in the cited material | CCB results release dated 28 March 2025; ICBC figure is full-year |
| Total cash distributed | Approximately RMB100,754 million | Approximately RMB109,773 million | 2024 annual disclosures |
| Reported payout measure | 30.0% payout ratio | 31.3% ordinary-share payout percentage | 2024 annual disclosures |
| Published price-based yield | No directly comparable 2024 A-share/H-share average-price table in the cited release | 5.32% for A shares; 7.49% for H shares | ICBC 2024 results overview; calculated using the annual per-share dividend and average annual share price |
| Dividend-policy comment | The bank says it has maintained a 30% payout ratio in recent years | Annual-report statement specifies the 2024 cash amount and per-share distribution | CCB Annual Report 2024 and ICBC Annual Report 2024 |
On the evidence that is directly documented, ICBC leads by a narrow margin for an investor whose priority is cash income. That is a starting point, not an automatic buy signal: the yield you actually receive depends on the security you can buy and the price you pay.

What CCB paid and what its policy means
Cash amount for 2024
CCB reported a full-year 2024 dividend of RMB0.403 per share and approximately RMB100,754 million in aggregate cash dividends. Its 28 March 2025 results release identifies RMB0.206 per share as the final dividend component. The 30.0% payout ratio is the bank’s stated share of earnings returned through the distribution.
Evidence of consistency
In its 2024 annual report, CCB says: “The Bank always attaches great importance to investor returns, and continues to reward its investors with stable cash dividends, maintaining a payout ratio of 30% in recent years.” This is evidence of a stated pattern, not a promise that the same percentage will apply in every future year. A payout policy can be changed when earnings, capital requirements or regulation change.
How to read CCB’s yield disclosure
CCB said its dividend yield per share was above 5% in each of the three years before the cited release. The statement does not provide a directly comparable 2024 A-share and H-share average-price table, so it should not be placed beside ICBC’s 5.32% and 7.49% figures as if both banks used the same calculation and period. The CCB statement is useful historical context, but your own entry price is needed to estimate a forward or trailing yield.

Rank #2
What ICBC paid and why its income case is slightly stronger
Cash amount and payout percentage
ICBC’s 2024 annual-report board report states: “The Bank will distribute cash dividends of about RMB109,773 million, or RMB3.080 per ten shares (pre-tax) for the whole year.” Dividing the ten-share quotation by ten gives RMB0.308 per share. The same disclosure reports a 31.3% ordinary-share payout percentage.
Published A-share and H-share yields
ICBC’s 2024 results overview calculates an average-price dividend yield of 5.32% for A shares and 7.49% for H shares. The calculation uses the annual per-share dividend divided by the average annual share price. These are historical, methodology-specific figures: they are not live yields, and they do not tell an investor what the yield will be at a different purchase price in 2026.
Why the lead is only marginal
The difference between the two reported payout percentages is small, and CCB’s cash distribution is also substantial. A lower market price for the CCB line, a different tax outcome or cheaper access through your broker could produce a higher net yield for a particular investor even though ICBC has the stronger published headline profile. Compare the exact share class and transaction date rather than choosing solely from the company names.

Use the listing-specific price
For a simple trailing calculation, divide the annual cash dividend per share by the price you pay, then multiply by 100. Use RMB0.403 for CCB or RMB0.308 for ICBC when analysing the 2024 distribution, and use the quotation for the exact A-share or H-share security. Do not substitute the price of one listing for the dividend or currency of another.
Rank #3
- Identify the ticker, exchange and share class your broker will execute.
- Convert the announced dividend into the currency used in your return calculation, if necessary.
- Divide the annual cash amount per share by your purchase price, not by an unrelated market average.
- Subtract any withholding tax, brokerage charges, custody fees and foreign-exchange costs to estimate net income.
- Label the result as historical or trailing unless the bank has formally declared a future dividend.
Average-price yields are a different reference point
ICBC’s 5.32% A-share and 7.49% H-share figures use average annual prices, so they are useful for comparing the 2024 market experience but may differ materially from the yield on your trade. A share bought after a price rise will have a lower yield on cost than the published average-price figure; a share bought after a fall will have a higher one, subject to the same dividend and currency assumptions.
Dividend sustainability: what the disclosures do and do not show
A sustainable bank dividend requires more than a high percentage. Earnings must cover the distribution, capital must remain adequate after the payment, and credit losses must not consume the resources needed to support the business. The available disclosures provide useful indicators, but they cannot guarantee a future dividend.
ICBC’s 2024 operating context
ICBC reported 2024 net profit of RMB366.946 billion, up 0.5% year over year. It reported a 19.39% capital-adequacy ratio, a 1.34% non-performing-loan ratio and 214.91% provision coverage. Together, these figures give an income investor a snapshot of profitability, regulatory capital and reserve coverage at the reporting date. They are not forecasts: a slowdown in earnings, a rise in credit losses or a change in capital rules could alter future distributions.

CCB’s statement that it has maintained a 30% payout ratio in recent years is the clearest consistency signal in the cited CCB material. It does not include a matching set of 2024 capital, non-performing-loan and provision-coverage figures here, so it would be misleading to infer that CCB and ICBC have identical balance-sheet support from the payout percentages alone.
Rank #4
Payout ratio versus cash yield
A payout ratio measures the portion of earnings returned to shareholders; a dividend yield measures the cash dividend relative to a share price. A bank can keep the payout ratio stable while its yield changes every day as the stock price moves. Conversely, a high yield caused by a falling price can reflect increased market concern rather than a safer dividend.
Factors that can reverse the ranking for your portfolio
Share class and market access
A shares and H shares represent different trading venues, investor bases and price levels. ICBC’s published yields demonstrate how large the difference can be between listings. Confirm that your broker permits the relevant mainland or Hong Kong market, supports dividend collection in the needed currency and provides the documents required for tax reporting.
Taxes and withholding
The quoted dividends are pre-tax amounts where the disclosure says so. Your residence, account type, treaty eligibility and the classification of the listing can affect withholding and reclaim procedures. Compare net cash received, not just the headline RMB amount. Because tax rules can change, obtain the current treatment from your broker or a qualified tax adviser before trading.
Currency exposure
An investor whose spending currency is not the renminbi has two sources of variability: the share price and the exchange rate between the renminbi, Hong Kong dollar or the investor’s home currency. A stable RMB dividend can still translate into a smaller home-currency payment if exchange rates move unfavourably. State the currency in every yield calculation and avoid treating a converted figure as guaranteed income.
Best Value
Liquidity and execution
Trading costs, bid-ask spreads, market hours and settlement arrangements vary by listing. A nominally higher yield can be offset by a wide spread or expensive custody service, especially for a small position. Check the executable price and all recurring fees rather than relying on a delayed quote or an average annual price.

Choose ICBC when the following conditions fit
- You want the stronger documented 2024 payout percentage and a published A-share/H-share yield comparison.
- Your broker offers the ICBC listing with acceptable liquidity and tax handling.
- You accept that the historical yield figures are not current quotes or promises.
- You are comfortable monitoring bank earnings, capital and credit-quality disclosures rather than treating the dividend as bond-like.
Choose CCB when the following conditions fit
- Your executable CCB price produces the better net yield after tax and currency costs.
- You value the bank’s stated practice of maintaining a 30% payout ratio in recent years.
- CCB’s available listing, settlement process or liquidity is more practical for your account.
- You prefer to diversify bank exposure instead of concentrating on the issuer with the slightly higher published percentage.
Use a side-by-side worksheet before placing an order
- Enter the exact ticker and exchange for each candidate.
- Record the live offer price, currency, lot size and expected commission.
- Enter the 2024 per-share dividend only as a historical reference; leave the future-dividend field blank until officially declared.
- Apply the withholding rate and foreign-exchange spread relevant to your account.
- Calculate annual net cash per share, net yield on cost and the portfolio weight after the purchase.
- Review the latest annual and interim disclosures for earnings, capital and asset quality before deciding whether the historical payout remains plausible.
Risks that a dividend comparison can hide
- Dividend change risk: A 30% or 31.3% historical payout is not a contractual coupon. Management and regulators can reduce, defer or restructure distributions.
- Bank-credit risk: Non-performing loans, provisioning needs and economic conditions can pressure earnings and capital at the same time.
- Price risk: A share price decline can overwhelm several years of dividends, while a price rally lowers the yield on new money.
- Policy and market-access risk: Rules affecting mainland and Hong Kong trading, settlement or foreign ownership can change the practical ability to buy or receive cash.
- Tax and reporting risk: The pre-tax amount shown in company disclosures may not match the amount credited to your account.
- Concentration risk: Owning both banks still leaves an investor heavily exposed to the same country’s banking and macroeconomic environment.
Questions to answer before treating either stock as income
Check the declaration date, record date, payment date and ex-dividend treatment in the official notice for the listing you intend to buy. Confirm whether your broker shows the dividend in RMB, Hong Kong dollars or another converted currency, and whether it deducts tax automatically. Then compare the resulting net cash with alternatives in your own portfolio rather than with a headline yield alone.
Also decide whether you need a predictable cash schedule or simply a long-term total-return holding. Bank dividends can be attractive, but the shares remain equities: their market value fluctuates, and the distribution is only one component of the investment outcome.

Bottom line
ICBC is the better headline pick for income on the documented 2024 evidence: its ordinary-share payout percentage is slightly higher and its results overview provides explicit A-share and H-share average-price yields. CCB is a credible alternative with a 30% payout ratio, RMB0.403 per-share 2024 dividend and a stated history of stable cash distributions. For an actual purchase, calculate the net yield on the exact listing and price available to you, then test whether the bank’s earnings, capital and asset-quality evidence supports your risk tolerance. The marginal published advantage should not outweigh materially different taxes, currency costs, liquidity or broker access.
