The best fit depends on the exact board and app combination. For a wireless board, DGT Pegasus is designed for online play; its manual says Chess.com games must be started directly in the Chess.com app. DGT’s traditional Serial e-Board is a separate, wired tournament-style device with additional connection requirements.
What does “Chess.com e-Board” mean?
Chess.com does not identify one universal Chess.com-branded e-board in its support guidance. It says electronic boards are supported in general, while asking owners to contact the board manufacturer to confirm compatibility and get setup help. That means “supported by Chess.com” is not enough to establish that every model works with every phone, app, or connection method. See the Chess.com Help Center guidance.
Compare the exact model and the route it uses to connect to Chess.com. The clearest DGT options in the available product documentation are Pegasus, a wireless board intended for online play, and the Serial e-Board, a wired computer-connected board with a different setup.
How the two DGT options compare
| Feature | DGT Pegasus | DGT Serial e-Board |
|---|---|---|
| Connection and intended setup | Wireless Bluetooth Low Energy board; the DGT Chess app is required for use. For Chess.com, the manual says to play directly through the Chess.com app. | Wired computer-connected input device. Individual use, including online play, requires separately purchased “Connection Material 1st Serial Board,” according to the manual. |
| Published dimensions | 35 × 35 × 2 cm overall; 40 mm squares, according to DGT’s product listing. | 540 × 540 mm overall; 55 × 55 mm squares, according to the DGT manual. |
| Portability and weight | DGT lists a 1,000 mAh, 3.7 V lithium-ion battery. A board weight is not stated in the cited product information. | The manual lists a board-only weight of 4.2 kg, making this a larger, heavier tournament-style setup. |
| What the documentation establishes for Chess.com | The Pegasus manual states that Chess.com play is possible only directly through the Chess.com app. | The cited manual describes a PlayChess setup using Fritz software and DGT drivers, but does not establish a current Chess.com workflow. |
The specifications are published by DGT, not independent comparative test results. The documentation does not establish a controlled performance winner.

Using DGT Pegasus with Chess.com
DGT describes Pegasus as a wireless Bluetooth chessboard. Its product listing gives an overall size of 35 × 35 × 2 cm, 40 mm squares, and a 3.7 V, 1,000 mAh lithium-ion battery. DGT lists the board, USB charging cable, 34 pieces (32 plus two extra queens), drawstring bag, phone stand, quick guide, and technical data sheet in the box. These are product-page specifications, not a hands-on assessment.
The key app detail is explicit in the DGT Pegasus manual: “Playing via Chess.com is only possible directly via the Chess.com app.” Do not assume that starting from DGT Chess is the route for a Chess.com game. The manual’s general setup directions include installing DGT Chess, enabling Bluetooth, powering on the board, selecting a platform and board, and setting up a game; its Chess.com instruction specifically points to the Chess.com app.

When the Serial e-Board makes sense
The traditional DGT Serial e-Board is a computer-connected input device: moves made on the physical board can be entered into a chess program, a website, or DGT Pi. It is not the same kind of portable, wireless setup as Pegasus. The 2019 manual says individual use, including online play, requires “Connection Material 1st Serial Board,” purchased separately. It documents a PlayChess workflow involving Fritz software and DGT drivers, and notes that setup requirements vary by chess website. That older workflow should not be treated as a current Chess.com compatibility guarantee.

- DGT e-board chess set

- DGT 3000 digital chess clock

- Fritz chess software
Its published dimensions are 540 × 540 mm, with 55 × 55 mm squares, and the manual lists 4.2 kg for the board alone. Consider it if a larger tournament-style board and computer-connected workflow suit your use; account for the extra connection material and setup rather than expecting a ready-to-play Bluetooth board.
How to choose for online play
- Confirm the exact board model. Ask the manufacturer whether that model works with Chess.com and your phone or computer; Chess.com’s general support statement does not resolve model-specific setup.
- Check the app route. For Pegasus and Chess.com, use the Chess.com app as directed by the Pegasus manual. Confirm the current app requirements before purchase.
- Choose your connection style. Pegasus is the wireless Bluetooth option in these sources. The Serial e-Board uses a computer-connected setup and separately purchased connection material for individual online use.
- Match the board to your space and needs. Pegasus is listed at 35 cm square overall with 40 mm squares; the Serial e-Board is 54 cm square with 55 mm squares and a listed board-only weight of 4.2 kg.
- Decide whether tournament functions matter. If you need a larger tournament-style board or computer-oriented recording workflow, investigate the Serial e-Board’s current software and connection requirements. If your priority is a wireless board for online games, Pegasus is the more directly relevant DGT model in the cited documentation.
What about using a modified DGT Centaur?
A community project describes modifying a DGT Centaur to emulate Pegasus so it can work with Pegasus-compatible apps. The project page is dated October 6, 2023. This is a technically specialized, community-maintained modification—not standard out-of-box Centaur functionality or a DGT support promise—so it is not the straightforward choice for someone seeking a supported online-play setup. See DGT Centaur Mods.
