To check whether a game is Steam Deck Verified before buying, open its Steam Store page and read the Steam Deck Compatibility badge and details. Verified means it works out of the box; Playable may require a workaround; Unsupported means it currently does not function on Deck; and Unknown means Valve has not checked it. Recheck the live Store page near checkout because ratings can change.
The useful question is not only “Is this game Steam Deck Verified?” but also “What exactly would I need to do if it is Playable?” Valve’s rating gives you a compatibility assessment, while the details explain any specific limitation or manual step. Use both before you decide whether a digital Steam purchase suits the way you want to play.
How do I check Steam Deck compatibility before buying?
- Find the exact game on the Steam Store. Make sure you have the right edition or title, then open its Store page. Searching for a familiar series name can bring up several games or editions, so confirm the page is for the one you intend to buy.
- Find the Steam Deck compatibility badge. Open the Steam Deck Compatibility details to see the rating and any explanation. Valve directs shoppers to the Store page for information about requirements unmet by Playable or Unsupported games. The explanation matters: a category by itself does not tell you which particular limitation applies.
- Read the explanation, not just the label. A Playable rating can involve a specific manual step, such as choosing a community controller layout or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Decide whether that workaround is acceptable to you. If the game is Unsupported, read the stated issue rather than assuming a controller adjustment will fix it.
- Make your decision using the current information. For an Unknown game, treat compatibility as uncertain rather than assuming either that it will work or that it will fail. Reopen the page near checkout in case its rating or details have changed. A saved screenshot or an older description may no longer reflect the live assessment.
The individual game page is the useful final check. A general controller-support label or a Windows or Linux compatibility label is not the same thing as the Steam Deck rating. Likewise, the fact that the Store lets you buy a game does not mean Valve has assessed it as Verified.

What do Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown mean?
Valve uses four categories. They describe the result of its Steam Deck compatibility review—not how good a game is, how much you will enjoy it, or whether it is available to purchase.
| Rating | What it means for a buyer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works out of the box on Steam Deck. Valve describes this as: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” | Check the live page for the current rating. Verified is a compatibility assessment, not a promise of a particular frame rate in every scene or with every future game version. |
| Playable | The game can be played, but may require manual configuration or another adjustment. | Read the game’s specific caveat. A controller-layout change and a launcher that is easier to navigate by touchscreen are different kinds of friction; decide whether the stated step works for you. |
| Unsupported | The game currently is not functional on Deck, according to its compatibility assessment. | Read the reason Valve gives. If the issue concerns Proton or middleware, such as anti-cheat, a controller setting may not address it. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the game. The rating is not evidence that the game works—or that it fails. | Decide whether you are comfortable buying without a Deck compatibility assessment. Do not treat Unknown as a softer form of Verified. |
These labels are not a ranking of game quality. If two games are both Verified, the badge alone does not say which is better; compare their features and suitability separately. A Verified title and a Playable title can both be worth considering, but the latter asks you to accept the exact caveat shown on its page. An Unknown title is a different kind of uncertainty: Valve has not checked it, so the label does not describe a known workaround.
For a quick comparison, consider four things: whether the game is Verified or Playable; what manual step each Playable game actually needs; whether an Unsupported explanation points to Proton or middleware; and whether you are comfortable proceeding without an assessment when the status is Unknown. That lets you compare practical friction rather than treating every non-Verified badge as identical.

There is no single workaround that applies to every Playable game. The detail attached to that game’s rating is what matters: check the exact action it calls for, then consider whether you can and want to do it. “Playable” does not, by itself, tell you how often you will encounter a limitation or whether two different games need the same adjustment.
- Controller configuration: Valve’s examples include selecting a community controller configuration. The relevant question is whether you are willing to choose or change a layout rather than play with the default setup. If you prefer the standard controls without setup, this may be more friction than you want.
- Launcher navigation: Some launchers may be awkward to navigate with a controller. Valve gives touchscreen navigation as an example of a workaround; consider whether that fits how you plan to play. A step that is manageable at a desk may be less convenient if you expect to use the Deck only as a handheld.
- Other stated caveats: Read the game-specific detail rather than guessing from the category name. A label does not tell you which limitation applies to a particular title. Use the page’s explanation to determine whether the requirement is something you can accommodate.
If the suggested step is acceptable, Playable may still suit your needs. If you want a game to start and work without manual adjustments, Verified is the clearer signal. Do not assume that an accessory or a controller tweak will resolve an Unsupported game whose stated problem is Proton or middleware compatibility.
For a specific launcher or input warning, Valve’s docking guidance documents connecting a mouse and keyboard through a dock, and supports power delivery passthrough. A Steam Deck-compatible USB-C dock with PD passthrough, optionally paired with a USB mouse, can be a conditional convenience if that is how you plan to play. First consider the built-in touchscreen or the stated controller-layout workaround; an accessory is not required merely because a game is Playable, and it is not a remedy for an Unsupported compatibility issue.
Can I browse only games checked for Steam Deck?
Yes. Steam Store search offers separate compatibility filters for Verified and Playable games. Valve also describes the first Deck Store tab as emphasizing games that work well on Deck; the wider Store is not restricted to those games.
Use a filter to narrow a discovery search, then open the individual game’s Store page and read its compatibility details before buying. A filtered results list is useful for browsing, but the game page is the final check for its current badge and caveats. The Verified filter is useful if you want to start with games assessed as working out of the box. The Playable filter can help you find games that are assessed as playable but may involve a manual step; inspect each result because the caveats can differ.

Do not interpret a Store tab that emphasizes games that work well on Deck as a guarantee that every game outside that tab fails. The wider Store includes more than the games emphasized there. A filtered list is a discovery aid, not a replacement for checking the specific page of the game you might buy.
How can I check compatibility for a game I already own?
Open the game’s entry in your Steam Deck library and look for its rating. Valve says the library can be filtered by compatibility and provides a personalized library breakdown. Those views help you sort titles you already have by their Deck assessment rather than opening every entry one by one.
The library view is useful when deciding what to install or play from titles you already own. If you are considering a purchase, use the Store page: it puts the rating and the game’s stated unmet requirements in the buying context. Either way, read the details for a Playable or Unsupported title rather than relying on the label alone.

Valve’s criteria cover four areas: input, display, seamlessness, and system support. Together, they help explain why a game that runs well on a desktop can receive a different assessment on Deck. The Deck review concerns using the game on the Deck, not just whether a desktop operating system or a controller is listed as supported.
- Input: Controller support, appropriate button prompts, and keyboard handling. This category helps account for how the game is controlled on Deck rather than assuming a desktop mouse-and-keyboard setup is enough.
- Display: Supported resolution, legible text, and suitable default settings. A game may need to present readable information and appropriate defaults on the Deck display.
- Seamlessness: No compatibility warning and a launcher that can be navigated. An obstructive or difficult-to-use launcher can affect the experience even if the game itself is otherwise playable.
- System support: Proton and relevant middleware, including anti-cheat where applicable. This is why a general controller tweak may not solve a problem that concerns system compatibility or middleware.
Valve’s developer checklist calls for a playable default configuration at 30 fps and 800p on Steam Deck. That is a review criterion—not a promise that every scene will hold 30 fps, that the game has been assessed at every setting, or that a specific game will achieve a particular performance result. Do not infer a game-specific benchmark from the badge. The figure describes the developer checklist’s default-configuration expectation, not a measurement that shoppers can apply to every moment of play.
Similarly, Verified is not a promise about every possible setting or a guarantee that future versions will behave identically. Use the badge for the compatibility assessment it represents and use the game page’s current explanation for the latest details; do not turn the category or checklist into a performance claim Valve has not made for that individual title.
Can a game’s Steam Deck rating change?
Yes. Valve says compatibility reviews are ongoing and that games can be reviewed again automatically—for example, after Proton changes or reports that test data is inaccurate. A badge or screenshot saved months ago may not reflect the current Store page.
Valve says ratings for tested titles apply across both Steam Deck LCD and OLED. That does not mean the rating cannot change over time: the practical step is still to check the live page near checkout. A rating that applies across those models is not the same as a permanent assessment that can never be revisited.

Because ratings can change, avoid basing a purchase decision solely on an old forum post, screenshot, or past recollection. Return to the Store page and read the current rating and caveat. This is particularly important if you are relying on a workaround or are considering a title that was previously Unknown.
Does a compatibility rating affect whether I can buy a game?
No. The rating affects how a game is presented for Steam Deck compatibility; it does not by itself determine whether the Store makes the game available for purchase on Deck. A badge is a compatibility guide, not a purchase-availability filter or a guarantee about every individual setup.
Do not infer the rating from other labels. A game’s general Windows, Linux, or controller-support information may be useful for other reasons, but it does not replace the specific Deck badge and its explanation. If the Store lists the game for sale, that alone does not establish that it is Verified or even that Valve has reviewed it.
What if the game is not suitable after I buy it?
For eligible games bought through Steam, Valve’s standard refund offer is a request made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Valve says you can still request consideration outside those rules, but an exception is not guaranteed. Check Valve’s current Steam Refunds policy for the applicable terms.
The Steam refund policy does not cover purchases made outside Steam, such as third-party keys. Refund eligibility depends on the purchase channel as well as the time and playtime conditions, so do not treat a brief trial as a risk-free purchase. If a refund matters to your decision, confirm the current policy and where the transaction will take place before paying.
The 14-day and under-two-hours thresholds are the standard policy conditions for eligible Steam game purchases, not a promise that every request will receive the same outcome. They also do not turn a third-party key into a Steam purchase. Keep the compatibility check as your first safeguard and treat refund terms as a limited fallback rather than a substitute for checking the Store page.
Does storage make a game Steam Deck Verified?
No. Adding storage can provide room for installed games, but it does not change a game’s compatibility rating. Valve supports UHS-I class 3 or better microSD cards and says faster UHS-II and UHS-III transfer speeds are not supported; storage choice and Verified status answer different questions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you are shopping for more room for installed games, a “Steam Deck UHS-I microSD card” is a storage search, not a compatibility fix. A faster card standard does not make an Unknown game tested, turn Playable into Verified, or resolve an Unsupported Proton or middleware issue. Buy storage only if you need capacity, and make the compatibility decision from the game’s Store details.

What should I compare when choosing between games?
Start with compatibility, then compare the games themselves. If one candidate is Verified and another is Playable, read the Playable title’s exact manual steps and decide whether you are comfortable doing them. If both are Playable, compare the specific caveats rather than assuming the labels describe the same inconvenience. If one is Unsupported because of a Proton or middleware issue, do not treat a controller configuration or dock as a solution unless the page indicates an input or launcher issue instead.
An Unknown rating is not automatically worse than Unsupported: Unknown means Valve has not checked the game, while Unsupported reports a current compatibility assessment. But Unknown also offers no reviewed assurance. Decide whether you are comfortable with that uncertainty rather than treating it as a positive or negative verdict. Once you have considered the badge and any workaround, compare the titles on features, price, and personal preference—the compatibility category is not a quality ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a dock or accessory improve compatibility?
Not in the sense of changing Valve’s rating. A dock, mouse, or keyboard may make a particular input or launcher workaround more convenient if the game’s Playable details point to that kind of friction. Valve documents dock connections for mouse and keyboard and PD passthrough. Prefer the built-in touchscreen or controller-layout workaround when it is adequate, and do not buy an accessory on the assumption that it will fix an Unsupported game’s Proton or middleware problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the decision tied to the actual warning on the game page: if it concerns navigation, consider whether touch input or a desk setup helps; if it concerns a controller layout, consider whether changing that layout is acceptable. If the warning concerns system support, an input accessory does not answer that issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this game Steam Deck Verified?
Open the specific game’s Steam Store page and check its Steam Deck Compatibility badge and details. A general controller-support or Windows/Linux label is not a substitute for the Deck rating; recheck the live page near checkout because Valve can revisit ratings.
Will this game run on Steam Deck?
The badge is the best place to start. Verified means it works out of the box, Playable may need a manual step, Unsupported means it currently is not functional according to the assessment, and Unknown means Valve has not checked it. Read the title’s details rather than guessing from the label.
What does Playable on Steam Deck mean?
It means the game can be played but may require manual configuration or another adjustment. Valve’s examples include selecting a community controller configuration or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Check the game-specific caveat and decide whether that step suits you.

Does Unknown mean a game will not work on Steam Deck?
No. Unknown means Valve has not checked the game; it is not evidence of success or failure. Treat it as uncertainty, not as a softer Verified rating or another word for Unsupported.
Does 30 fps at 800p mean a Verified game will always run at 30 fps?
No. Valve’s 30 fps at 800p figure is a developer review criterion for a playable default configuration, not an all-scenes performance guarantee. The badge does not provide a game-specific frame-rate benchmark.
Do Steam Deck Verified ratings differ between LCD and OLED models?
Valve says ratings for tested titles apply across Steam Deck LCD and OLED. Ratings can still be revisited, so check the live Store page for the current assessment.
Can I get a Steam refund if I bought a game key from another seller?
Valve’s Steam refund policy does not cover purchases made outside Steam, including third-party keys. Check the seller’s own terms before buying, because Steam’s standard refund offer does not apply to that transaction.
Does Steam Deck Verified mean the game is better than a Playable game?
No. The categories describe compatibility and any setup friction, not a game’s quality, reviews, or value. Use the rating to assess Deck suitability, then compare the games on the merits that matter to you.
Will a microSD card make an Unsupported game work?
No. A microSD card adds storage capacity; it does not alter compatibility. Valve supports UHS-I class 3 or better cards and says UHS-II and UHS-III transfer speeds are not supported.
The Bottom Line
Before buying, open the exact game’s live Steam Store page, check its Steam Deck Compatibility badge, and read the details. Verified is the out-of-box signal; Playable can involve a specific workaround; Unsupported is not a problem an accessory necessarily fixes; and Unknown means untested, not failed. Recheck near checkout, and remember that Steam’s standard refund conditions apply only to eligible Steam purchases—not third-party keys.
