LTE band numbers are the quickest way to check whether an unlocked phone has the radio hardware needed for AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile. They are not, however, a complete activation guarantee: carrier certification, VoLTE, firmware, duplexing support, and the phone’s IMEI can still determine whether service works.

Use the carrier table below as a practical buying checklist. Coverage and deployment vary by location, so a band listed for a carrier may not be active everywhere.

U.S. 4G LTE bands at a glance

Carrier LTE bands to look for What they do
AT&T 2, 4, 5, 12, 14, 17, 29, 30, 66 Bands 12 and 17 provide much of the low-band coverage. Bands 2, 4/66, and 30 add capacity. Band 14 supports FirstNet and public-safety use. Band 29 is supplemental downlink.
Verizon 2, 4, 5, 13, 46, 48, 66 Band 13 is the main low-band coverage layer. Bands 2, 4/66, and 5 add capacity and coverage; bands 46 and 48 are supplemental capacity in selected areas.
T-Mobile 4, 5, 12, 66, 71 Bands 12 and 71 provide extended-range low-band LTE. Bands 4 and 66 are important AWS layers. Band 5 has limited deployment. T-Mobile currently lists band 2 under 2G rather than its LTE list.

For a single unlocked phone intended for all three networks, a strong LTE radio specification includes bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14, 17, 29, 30, 48, 66, and 71. Not every phone needs every supplemental band, but missing a carrier’s primary low-band spectrum can make a noticeable difference outside dense urban areas.

What each LTE band means

Band Frequency or role Practical significance
2 1900 MHz PCS General LTE capacity and coverage on AT&T and Verizon. Do not assume it is a critical current T-Mobile LTE band; T-Mobile’s current support page places band 2 under 2G.
4 AWS 1700/2100 MHz A major LTE layer used by all three carriers.
5 850 MHz cellular Low-frequency coverage and capacity, with deployment varying by carrier and market.
12 700 MHz low band Important extended-range LTE for AT&T and T-Mobile.
13 Verizon 700 MHz C-block Verizon’s principal low-band LTE coverage layer.
14 700 MHz public-safety spectrum AT&T’s FirstNet band. It is particularly important for FirstNet-compatible devices.
17 Narrower 700 MHz band inside band 12 Relevant to AT&T compatibility. Supporting both bands 12 and 17 is preferable because phone specifications do not always describe them consistently.
29 700 MHz supplemental downlink AT&T download capacity. It does not provide ordinary two-way LTE by itself; another band normally supplies the uplink.
30 2300 MHz WCS Additional AT&T capacity where deployed.
46 LTE Licensed Assisted Access in 5 GHz Supplemental capacity, not a substitute for Verizon’s primary coverage bands.
48 CBRS Additional Verizon capacity in locations where CBRS has been deployed.
66 Extended band 4 Extends the AWS range. A phone with band 66 generally also covers the band 4 range.
71 T-Mobile 600 MHz T-Mobile extended-range 4G LTE as well as 5G n71. It is not a 5G-only band.

Carrier-by-carrier buying checklist

AT&T

For broad AT&T compatibility, check for:

  • 2, 4, and 12 as core LTE support;
  • 5, 14, 17, 29, 30, and 66 for broader compatibility and additional capacity.

Bands 12 and 17 deserve special attention. Band 17 occupies a narrower portion of the band 12 range, and manufacturers may list one, the other, or both in a specification sheet. A device supporting both avoids an unnecessary compatibility gap.

Band 14 matters if the phone will be used on FirstNet. Bands 29 and 30 improve AT&T capacity but are not equivalent to the low-band coverage supplied by bands 12 and 17.

Verizon

For Verizon, prioritize the bands in this order:

  1. Band 13 for broad low-band coverage.
  2. Bands 2, 4, 5, and 66 for additional LTE coverage and capacity.
  3. Band 48 for CBRS capacity in supported locations.
  4. Band 46 as an extra capacity feature, not a coverage requirement.

The claim that Verizon uses only band 13 is too narrow. Band 13 remains the most important Verizon LTE band for coverage, but a phone lacking the other supported bands may lose capacity or performance in areas where Verizon relies on those layers.

T-Mobile

For current T-Mobile LTE, look for:

  • Bands 4 and 66 for the main AWS LTE layers;
  • Bands 12 and 71 for extended-range low-band coverage;
  • Band 5 where it is deployed locally.

Older compatibility charts often include band 2 for T-Mobile LTE. T-Mobile’s current network information lists bands 4, 5, 12, 66, and 71 for LTE and lists band 2 under 2G, so band 2 should not be treated as a critical current T-Mobile LTE requirement without checking the specific device and market.

Likewise, Sprint-era bands 25, 26, and 41 should not automatically be added to a current T-Mobile LTE checklist. T-Mobile shut down Sprint’s 4G LTE network in June 2022. Band 41 is primarily relevant today as 5G n41 rather than as a basic T-Mobile LTE requirement.

How to check a phone before buying it

  1. Find the exact model number. “Global,” “U.S.,” and carrier variants of the same phone can have different radios. Do not rely only on the product family name.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s technical specifications. Look for an LTE or 4G FDD/TDD band list. Compare the list with the carrier table above.
  3. Check the carrier’s approval status. Band support does not prove that the carrier will activate the phone. T-Mobile specifically recommends using its IMEI Status Check.
  4. Confirm VoLTE support. A phone may receive LTE data but fail voice activation if it lacks compatible VoLTE support or the correct carrier configuration.
  5. Check the phone’s regional firmware and frequency duplexing. Imported models can share a model name with U.S. versions while lacking required bands, carrier firmware, or certification.
  6. Check coverage at the actual address. A supported band may be licensed or deployed only in particular markets. Band support cannot predict indoor coverage at a specific location.

Common LTE-band mistakes

Band numbers alone guarantee service

They do not. The phone also needs compatible VoLTE, carrier firmware or certification, suitable frequency duplexing, and—depending on the network—IMEI approval. A phone with an apparently complete band list can still be rejected during activation.

Band 29 provides normal two-way LTE

It does not. AT&T band 29 is supplemental downlink spectrum. It normally works alongside another LTE band that provides the uplink, so its absence is less serious than the absence of a primary low-band such as band 12 or 17.

Band 71 is only for 5G

That is outdated. T-Mobile uses band 71 for Extended Range 4G LTE and n71 for 5G. A phone can therefore use band 71 even when it is connected to LTE rather than 5G.

Every listed band is equally important

It is not. Coverage bands should come first when comparing phones. For example, Verizon band 13 is more fundamental to broad coverage than bands 46 or 48, which are supplemental capacity bands. Similarly, AT&T bands 12/17 and T-Mobile bands 12 and 71 matter more for range than several higher-frequency capacity bands.

Best all-carrier LTE combination

The most useful broad U.S. LTE set is:

2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14, 17, 29, 30, 48, 66, and 71

This combination covers the principal LTE requirements and useful capacity bands for AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. It still does not replace checking the exact model’s IMEI, VoLTE behavior, carrier certification, and coverage in the places where the phone will be used.

FAQ

Which LTE band is most important for Verizon?

Band 13 is Verizon’s key low-band LTE layer and the first band to prioritize for broad coverage. Bands 2, 4/66, 5, 46, and 48 also support Verizon service and capacity where deployed.

Does T-Mobile still require LTE band 2?

T-Mobile’s current network information lists band 2 under 2G rather than its 4G LTE bands. For current T-Mobile LTE, prioritize bands 4, 5, 12, 66, and 71, then verify the exact phone with T-Mobile’s IMEI Status Check.

Are LTE bands 12 and 17 the same?

No, but band 17 occupies a narrower portion of the band 12 range. Phone specifications may list one or both, so supporting both is preferable for AT&T compatibility.

Will a phone work if it supports the right LTE bands?

Not necessarily. VoLTE, carrier firmware, frequency duplexing, certification, IMEI approval, and local network deployment can all affect activation and service.

The Bottom Line

For one unlocked phone across the three major U.S. networks, look for LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14, 17, 29, 30, 48, 66, and 71. Prioritize 13 for Verizon, 12/17 and 14 for AT&T, and 12, 66, and 71 for T-Mobile. Then confirm the exact model’s IMEI and carrier approval before buying.
