For a self-managed FFmpeg playlist stream, compare the whole monthly bill—not just the VPS headline price. A continuous stream can use more than 1 TB of outbound transfer in a 30-day month, so AWS Lightsail’s $5 Linux bundle with 1 TB may not be the cheapest option after overage. Hetzner lists an EU cost-optimized server with at least 20 TB of traffic, while DigitalOcean shared CPU Droplets start at $4/month, but you must check the selected plan’s transfer pool. None of these listings proves that a particular server will handle your encode settings; test your actual workload before relying on it.
Start with the streaming workload and total cost
A VPS keeps FFmpeg running on a remote server instead of a computer at home. You manage the operating system, FFmpeg process, files, stream key, monitoring, and recovery. The monthly cost is therefore the server charge plus any transfer overage or regional extras, along with the time needed to operate it.
First decide whether FFmpeg will copy an already encoded video stream or encode/transcode it, and whether you need filters, overlays, or other processing. Copying streams has a different CPU profile from transcoding. Because the playlist, filters, resolution, frame rate, codec, and location are unspecified, there is no established minimum VPS size for this use case. No identical-workload benchmark is available for the providers below.
- Estimate transfer from the video and audio bitrate you intend to send continuously.
- Check the selected plan’s monthly transfer allowance, overage rules, region, and any address or tax charges at checkout.
- Check whether its storage fits the playlist files; a small included disk may require external file storage or a different workflow.
- Choose a location and route that can sustain the upload to YouTube ingest, then test the actual stream and leave capacity headroom.

| Option | Published example | Transfer and important caveats | What it may suit |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo (managed alternative) | Daily $0.99 per day; Weekly $2.99 per week; Monthly $9.99 per month; 6 months $49.99 for 6 months; Yearly $89.99 a year. | Not a VPS plan; one always-on YouTube stream per slot, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. First day free with no card (one free day per account). | People who prefer to upload a video or playlist and have the stream run in the cloud rather than administer a server. |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux/Unix | $5/month: 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, 1 TB transfer. $7/month: 1 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 40 GB SSD, 2 TB transfer. | Inbound and outbound transfer count toward the allowance; only outbound traffic beyond it incurs overage. Regional exceptions apply. The smaller memory sizes may constrain additional software. | A low-entry-price option when its transfer pool and small memory footprint fit the workload. |
| Hetzner Cloud cost-optimized CX23 | 2 Intel/AMD vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe; the EU listing says at least 20 TB included traffic. | Confirm price, location availability, traffic terms, and extras when selecting a server. The provider describes the line as suited to low-to-medium CPU usage with variable shared performance. | A transfer-heavy stream that does not depend on consistent high CPU performance, subject to location and availability. |
| DigitalOcean shared CPU Droplet | Shared CPU Droplets start at $4/month. | The exact selected plan’s transfer pool must be checked. Data sent over a public interface counts against the team’s transfer pool. | A low-cost starting point if the chosen plan’s bandwidth allowance and workload are adequate. |
For current plan terms, see Amazon Lightsail pricing, Hetzner cost-optimized cloud, DigitalOcean VPS options, and DigitalOcean Droplet pricing documentation. A DigitalOcean overview mentions video streaming as a possible VPS application; that general description is not a benchmark or confirmation that its cheapest Droplet can run your stream.
Estimate monthly transfer before choosing a plan
For a constant bitrate, estimate monthly data as bitrate in bits per second × seconds in the month ÷ 8, then convert to the provider’s GB or TB convention. Allow extra for audio and protocol overhead, and confirm whether the provider counts inbound traffic, outbound traffic, or both.
For illustration, a constant 5 Mbps output over 30 days is roughly 1.62 TB before protocol overhead. This is a calculation from the bitrate and a 30-day month, not a provider benchmark. It shows why a low server price can become less attractive if its transfer pool is small.

Lightsail counts both inbound and outbound transfer against the plan allowance and charges only for outbound traffic beyond it, subject to regional exceptions. DigitalOcean says traffic sent over a public interface counts against the team’s transfer pool. Check the current terms for the exact plan and region rather than assuming all providers measure or bill bandwidth the same way.

Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the current requirements and recommended settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its table recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. It also lists minimums of 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a VPS route or CPU will sustain the output.
- Video: choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to the uploaded material and YouTube’s current guidance.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval, with no more than four seconds.
- Rate control: use CBR where applicable.
- Transport: prefer RTMPS.
- Audio: YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3; its stereo audio recommendation is 128 Kbps.
- Test with similar motion and audio to the intended stream, then monitor YouTube stream health and event messages.

Size the server with a real test, not a guess
A stream-copy workflow may need less CPU than live transcoding, but the exact requirement depends on the media and process. Filters, overlays, output resolution, frame rate, codec, and other software can all change the load. The listed vCPU and RAM figures alone cannot establish that the stream will remain stable.
- Prepare the playlist and the intended FFmpeg settings, including output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and transport.
- Run the intended stream on the candidate server long enough to observe the workload, and check CPU and memory use as well as FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health.
- Look for sustained resource pressure, dropped frames, reconnects, or ingest warnings. If any occur, review the settings and logs, then try a larger or more suitable plan or simplify the encode/filter workload.
- Restart the server and verify that the process comes back and resumes streaming before depending on it unattended.
This is a workload test, not a guarantee of future performance. Provider network routes, shared CPU behavior, and plan availability can vary; leave headroom rather than sizing to a brief successful run.
Account for the work of running FFmpeg 24/7
A bare VPS price does not include administration of the streaming process. Plan to install and configure FFmpeg, supervise it so a stopped process can be restarted, retain logs for diagnosis, protect the YouTube stream key, and check recovery after failures and reboots. Keep the key out of public scripts, repositories, and logs; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.

Also ensure you have rights to stream every video and audio track in the playlist. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if its contents violate copyright or YouTube policies. Check YouTube’s current rules and monitor stream health instead of assuming a looped playlist will be allowed simply because it was uploaded successfully.
Alternative: Vultr Broadcaster is a different workflow
Vultr documents a preconfigured remote OBS application for streaming, including YouTube setup and uploaded source files for 24/7 streams. Its guide calls for an A16 GPU instance. That is a different, potentially more resource-intensive setup from a minimal headless FFmpeg stream-copy server; it is not evidence that FFmpeg playlist playback requires a GPU. See Vultr’s Broadcaster Marketplace app guide.
