ChatGPT now offers a Try on control on some clothing and accessory listings. Select it, upload or take a selfie, and ChatGPT generates an image showing how the item might look on you. You can also upload a clothing or accessory photo and ask ChatGPT to visualize it or find similar products. Treat the result as a visual approximation—not proof of the item’s exact appearance, size, or fit.
How to virtually try on a ChatGPT shopping result
OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search guidance says the Try on button appears on eligible clothing and accessory listings. The feature is documented for both the web and mobile apps, although OpenAI does not publish a country-by-country rollout map.
- Ask ChatGPT to find the clothing or accessory you want, or open a product listing in shopping results.
- Choose Try on when the control is shown.
- Take a selfie or upload a suitable photo of yourself.
- Review the generated image. It is a visualization of the listing, not a photograph or a fitting-room measurement.
Android Authority reported seeing the feature and Favorites in Canada on mobile and web on October 2, 2026. That is a reported observation, not a guarantee that every account or region has the same controls.
Two ways to use images for shopping
| What you want to do | What you provide | What ChatGPT returns | What you still must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visualize a known item on yourself | A product listing plus a selfie, or an uploaded item image | A generated try-on image | Color, material, construction, measurements, size availability, fit and returns |
| Find alternatives from inspiration | A photo of clothing or accessories, an outfit image, or a descriptive prompt | Similar purchasable products and shopping comparisons | Whether the suggested item really matches the reference and the merchant’s specifications and policy |
For example, you could upload a photo of an outfit and ask for similar products, then use Try on when an eligible listing appears. Android Authority’s hands-on report describes using an item link and an outfit photo in this way. ChatGPT’s broader visual-shopping direction also includes image inspiration, conversational refinement and side-by-side comparisons, as described in OpenAI’s March 24, 2026 product-discovery announcement.

Why the generated image is not a fit test
The model has to infer body position, garment shape, drape, lighting and details from images. OpenAI does not provide independent measurements of try-on accuracy, and the available sources do not establish that a generated image reliably preserves every product detail.
- Product fidelity: Logos, prints, hardware, fabric texture, colors and small construction details may be altered or simplified.
- Appearance: The image can make an item look different because of pose, lighting, body representation or image-generation artifacts.
- Size and fit: A picture cannot establish whether a garment will fit your measurements, how fabric stretches, or where seams and hems will sit.
OpenAI’s specific buying guidance is: “Check the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return policy before buying.” Read the listing itself rather than treating ChatGPT’s generated description or image as a verified endorsement. OpenAI also notes that shopping results, labels, review summaries and price data can have limitations; results are selected independently and are not ads or influenced by OpenAI partnerships.

Practical checks before you place an order
1. Compare measurements, not the picture
- Use the merchant’s size chart and compare it with your own bust, waist, hip, shoulder, inseam or foot measurements as applicable.
- Check the garment’s stated cut—such as slim, relaxed, oversized or unisex—and its fabric composition and stretch.
- Look for model height, worn size and garment dimensions when the retailer supplies them.
2. Inspect the original product details
- Open the merchant listing to confirm color name, pattern, materials, closures, lining and included accessories.
- Compare multiple product photos, including close-ups and rear views, with the generated image.
- Check stock, delivery timing and the final price at checkout; these can change after ChatGPT shows a result.
3. Read the return and exchange rules
- Confirm the return window, eligible condition, restocking or return shipping charges and whether sale or personalized items are excluded.
- For shoes, underwear, swimwear or accessories with hygiene restrictions, verify whether an opened or tried item can be returned.
4. Use a second opinion for expensive purchases
For a costly or hard-to-return item, compare the merchant’s own photos, customer measurements and reviews, and if possible check the brand’s sizing guidance. A try-on render can help narrow choices, but it should not replace those checks.
Managing selfie reference photos
ChatGPT saves reference photos so they can be reused for future try-ons. To replace or remove them, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. If you share a photo containing other people, obtain their permission and remove images you no longer want retained.

Saving products and organizing a shortlist
Use the product bookmark control to save an item to Favorites. ChatGPT’s Library lets you create folders, which is useful for separating, for example, workwear, occasion outfits and alternatives to compare later. Availability of these controls can vary by account and rollout.
What ChatGPT’s shopping expansion means
OpenAI’s March 2026 announcement describes a shopping experience built around conversational product discovery, visual browsing, uploaded inspiration images and side-by-side comparisons. It named Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe’s, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair as integrations at that time. That list is a dated snapshot, not a complete or permanent retailer directory.

Those tools can reduce the effort of finding an item or an alternative. They do not turn generated images into guarantees about a product, a merchant or an outcome. The merchant’s listing remains the source to use for specifications, availability, payment and returns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The Bottom Line
ChatGPT’s Try on feature is useful for visualizing clothing and accessories and for moving from an inspiration photo to comparable products. Before buying, verify the merchant’s measurements, product details, current price and return policy; no generated image can confirm exact product fidelity or real-world fit.
