There is no universally safest chatbot for sensitive work. The decisive variable is not the brand name but the exact account tier, model, region and deployment path. A consumer app, an enterprise workspace, a direct API and a cloud-marketplace deployment can have different rules for model training, retention, human review, deletion and administrator access.
For confidential material, start with the decision framework below. OpenAI documents the clearest enterprise defaults in this comparison, Anthropic’s retention is highly deployment-specific, Google openly documents human review and multi-year retention for reviewed chats, and DeepSeek’s current official policy needs to be checked directly before you entrust it with sensitive data.
Start with the deployment decision, not the chatbot brand
Before comparing features, identify where your conversation will run and which contract governs it. The same model family can have materially different privacy behavior in each of these paths:
- Consumer application: You use a personal account in a public chat product. Consumer settings, the provider’s standard privacy policy and account-level controls apply.
- Business or enterprise workspace: An organization signs terms with the provider. Administrators may gain retention, identity, audit and access controls that do not exist in a personal account.
- API: Your software sends prompts directly to a model endpoint. The API’s logging, abuse-monitoring and retention terms govern the request, not the settings of a consumer chat application with a similar name.
- Cloud marketplace or hosted deployment: A cloud provider, regional service and model vendor may each impose terms. Data residency, support access and logging can differ from a direct purchase.
If you cannot name the product, plan and region, you do not yet know how your prompt will be handled. Treat an unverified deployment as unsuitable for confidential information.

A practical decision tree
- Is the information regulated, privileged, secret or capable of causing material harm if exposed? If yes, use only a deployment approved by your legal, security and compliance teams.
- Are you using a consumer app? Assume ordinary chats are retained until you delete them and that safety or quality programs can involve review, unless the provider’s current terms say otherwise.
- Do you need contractual controls? Prefer an enterprise or API arrangement with a signed data-processing agreement, administrator retention policy, access logging and a documented deletion process.
- Does the provider publish a precise policy for your exact product? If not, do not infer protection from another product in the same brand.
- Can you minimize the data? Remove credentials, direct identifiers and unnecessary passages before sending anything, even when the deployment has strong controls.

The table compares documented policy positions, not model quality, accuracy or security testing. A provider can have excellent enterprise controls while a consumer version of the same brand remains inappropriate for secrets.
ChatGPT: separate consumer chats from enterprise data
Consumer ChatGPT
Regular consumer ChatGPT chats remain saved in your account until you delete them. When you delete a chat, OpenAI says it is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. That is a deletion schedule, not an instant erasure promise; legal, security or other documented exceptions can affect how data is handled.
Temporary Chats reduce persistence but do not create a zero-retention channel. OpenAI documents that Temporary Chats may be kept for up to 30 days for safety. Use the mode when you need to avoid ordinary chat history, but do not paste credentials or regulated records on the assumption that the prompt disappears immediately.

OpenAI’s Enterprise Privacy documentation, updated January 8, 2026, states: “By default, we do not use your business data for training our models.” It also says, “Your workspace admins control how long your data is retained.” OpenAI documents encryption at rest and in transit and reports completion of SOC 2 Type 2.
Those are meaningful controls, but they become useful only when your organization configures them. Ask the administrator or contract owner:

- What retention period applies to chats, uploaded files, connectors, logs and backups?
- Can administrators or support personnel access content, and is that access audited?
- Which region stores the data, and where are subprocessors located?
- Does the selected model, connector or custom GPT follow the same no-training and retention terms?
- How are legal holds, account closure and deletion requests handled?
ChatGPT API and other OpenAI paths
Do not assume that an API request has the same history behavior as a chat window. Confirm the API’s current logging and abuse-monitoring terms, the organization-level retention setting and whether your selected endpoint has exceptions. A cloud-hosted OpenAI model can add the cloud provider’s identity, logging and residency obligations.
Claude: retention varies enough that the product name is not an answer
Documented retention differences
Anthropic documents deployment-specific retention. Its API documentation says some local session transcripts are stored for six years by default unless an organization has a finite custom retention policy. Separately, guidance for certain covered models requires 30-day retention and those models may not support zero-data-retention by default.
These figures are not contradictory: they describe different products, model categories or contractual arrangements. They also are not a universal “Claude keeps everything for six years” rule. Before using Claude for confidential work, identify whether your request is a local session, an API call, a managed organization workspace or a cloud-hosted deployment.
What to verify with Anthropic or your administrator
- The exact model identifier and whether it is one of the covered models subject to a 30-day minimum.
- Whether your organization has a finite custom retention policy or an approved zero-data-retention arrangement.
- What “transcript” includes: prompt text, generated output, tool calls, files, metadata and abuse-monitoring logs.
- Whether deleted content remains in backups or security logs and for how long.
- Which staff, contractors or subprocessors can access content for safety, support or legal reasons.
Because Anthropic’s public documentation distinguishes among paths, a privacy review that cites only “Claude” is incomplete. Keep the written product, model and contract references with your approval record.
Gemini: the shortest temporary window still permits processing
Keep Activity off
Google’s Gemini Apps privacy FAQ says that turning Keep Activity off prevents future chats from appearing in Activity and prevents them from being used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Google still retains those chats for 72 hours for response delivery, safety and feedback handling.

The control is therefore about future account activity and training use, not an immediate deletion command. It does not retroactively remove old chats, and it does not prevent the service from processing the prompt during the 72-hour window.
Temporary chats
Google documents the same 72-hour retention period for temporary chats. The purpose is operational: serving the response, detecting abuse and handling feedback. A 72-hour window may be acceptable for low-risk brainstorming, but it is not equivalent to a local-only session or a contractual zero-data-retention deployment.
Human review and the three-year exception
Google states: “A subset of chats are reviewed by human reviewers (including Google’s trained service providers) to help improve Google services.” Reviewed chats may be retained for up to three years after being disconnected from the account. Google also says reviewed feedback with associated conversations may be retained for up to three years.
This is the most important Gemini caveat for sensitive work: a setting that keeps a chat out of Activity does not guarantee that no human ever sees it. Never include a client’s name, account number, medical detail or secret merely because Keep Activity is disabled.
Workspace, API and cloud distinctions
Gemini Apps, Gemini for Workspace, Google APIs and models delivered through a cloud marketplace can have different terms. Confirm the exact service, administrator controls, region, data-processing agreement, support access and logging policy before treating a Google deployment as enterprise-safe.

DeepSeek: treat unverified privacy claims as a stop sign
The current official DeepSeek privacy policy was not available for verification in this comparison. That means no strong current claim can responsibly be made here about training use, retention, deletion, data location, human review or enterprise controls.
This is not proof that DeepSeek has weak privacy; it is an evidence limit. Until you can retrieve and review the current official policy for your region and product, keep confidential information out of the service. Ask for written answers about prompt storage, backups, reviewer access, cross-border transfer, model training, account deletion and contractual remedies.
How to handle confidential material safely
Classify before you paste
Use your organization’s existing data-classification labels. A practical minimum is:
- Public: already published or safe to disclose.
- Internal: routine business information that would be inconvenient, but not catastrophic, to expose.
- Confidential: customer records, contracts, unreleased plans, source code or internal investigations.
- Restricted: credentials, encryption keys, regulated personal data, privileged legal advice, health records, payment data or national-security information.
Consumer AI tools should generally be limited to public or carefully redacted internal material. Confidential and restricted data require an approved deployment, documented purpose and minimum-necessary sharing.

- Replace names with roles such as
customer_Aoremployee_17. - Remove passwords, API keys, session cookies, private certificates and recovery codes entirely.
- Generalize dates, addresses and account numbers when exact values are not needed.
- Send only the excerpt needed to answer the question; do not upload an entire mailbox or repository.
- Check generated output for copied secrets before saving it to another system.
Use a controlled workflow
- Record the business purpose and data class.
- Choose the approved provider, plan, model and region.
- Confirm training, retention, reviewer access and deletion terms for that exact path.
- Apply redaction and least-privilege file access.
- Disable unnecessary connectors, browser access and tool permissions.
- Keep an audit record of the account, policy version and retention setting.
- Delete the conversation or file when the work is complete, then follow up through the provider’s documented deletion process if required.
What deletion really means
Deletion has at least four layers: removal from the visible chat list, removal from active systems, expiration from backups and removal from review or safety datasets. Providers may use different schedules for each layer.

When a contract matters, ask for a data-flow diagram and a deletion certificate or equivalent attestation rather than relying on a button label.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The best brand is automatically safest.”
Correction: Compare the exact plan, model, region and deployment. Enterprise ChatGPT and consumer ChatGPT are not interchangeable privacy products.
“Temporary means zero retention.”
Correction: ChatGPT Temporary Chats can be retained up to 30 days, while Gemini temporary or Keep Activity-off chats are retained for 72 hours.

“Not used for training means nobody can see it.”
Correction: Training use, operational storage, abuse monitoring, human review and legal access are separate questions.
“A short deletion window makes a service safe for secrets.”
Correction: Secrets should not be sent to a consumer chatbot at all. Rotate a credential if it has already been exposed.
“A policy for one model covers every model.”
Correction: Anthropic’s six-year and 30-day figures demonstrate why model eligibility and endpoint matter. Verify the identifier in your configuration.
“Keep Activity off is retroactive.”
Correction: Google’s setting applies to future chats. Review and delete existing activity separately, subject to the provider’s retention rules.

Correction: Missing verification means uncertainty. Pause sensitive use until the current official policy is available and acceptable.
