Short answer: choose ChatGPT if you want the clearest documented path from an uploaded CSV or spreadsheet to Python-backed calculations, tables, and charts. Choose Claude if coding, long technical reasoning, and sandboxed Python analysis are your main needs. Choose Gemini if your files already live in Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, notebooks, or Workspace, or if multi-file context is the deciding factor.

None is a universal winner. Model, plan, region, prompt, account settings, file type, and privacy controls can change the result. Use any of them as an analysis assistant, then verify important statistical conclusions in a reproducible notebook and inspect the source data yourself.

The practical verdict at a glance

When your priority is… Best starting point Why What to verify first
Upload-to-analysis workflow with tables and charts ChatGPT OpenAI documents Data Analysis for inspecting uploaded data, creating tables and charts, reviewing code-backed analysis, and, for some tasks, writing and running Python in a stateful Jupyter notebook. Whether your current plan and account expose the required analysis tools, file limits, and model.
Code generation, debugging, and long-form technical reasoning Claude Anthropic describes sandboxed Python execution for advanced data analysis, alongside a workflow aimed at coding and knowledge work. Which Claude plan and model currently provide sandboxed Python, context capacity, and the tools you need.
Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Workspace, notebooks, or many related files Gemini Google documents uploads of documents, spreadsheets, notebooks, code folders, and GitHub repositories, chart creation from uploaded spreadsheets, and higher limits on Google AI Pro or Ultra. Current file-count and size limits, regional availability, and Keep Activity settings.
Guaranteed statistical correctness None The cited capability documentation explains what the products can do, not that every result or test choice is correct. Re-run the method in a controlled notebook and check assumptions, data types, and outputs.

This is a workflow recommendation rather than a benchmark ranking. Vinod Chugani wrote on October 12, 2026 that he tested the current paid versions of all three on the same tasks: statistical test selection, conceptual explanations, Python code generation, exploratory data analysis, and longer document analysis. His observations are useful evidence about that comparison, but they are not a guarantee for every model, plan, prompt, or account.

What each assistant can do for data science

ChatGPT: the most explicit upload-to-analysis path

OpenAI’s Help Center describes Data Analysis as a way to “inspect uploaded data, create tables and charts, and review code-backed analysis.” For a data scientist, that implies a relatively clear sequence: attach a CSV, XLSX, or another supported file; ask for an inspection; examine the generated table or chart; and review the code used to produce it. For some tasks, ChatGPT can write and run Python in a stateful Jupyter notebook, so later prompts can build on variables and intermediate results from the same analysis session.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That stateful behavior is useful for exploratory work. You can ask for column types and missing-value counts, request a transformation, then ask for a chart based on the transformed data without starting from zero. It also makes code review practical: ask the assistant to show the Python, explain each operation, identify assumptions, and point out where a result could be misleading.

The limitation is not that the workflow is unusable; it is that availability varies. The relevant model, plan, file allowance, execution environment, and retention controls can change. Confirm those details in your account before adopting ChatGPT for a production pipeline.

Claude: coding and sandboxed Python as the center of gravity

Anthropic’s pricing material says Claude platform users can “Run Python code in a sandboxed environment for advanced data analysis.” That is a strong fit when the work begins with a technical question, a script, or a notebook rather than a polished chart. You can ask for code generation, debugging, refactoring, an explanation of an error, or a critique of an analysis plan, then use sandboxed execution to inspect the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Claude is particularly attractive for work that combines programming with long-form reasoning: documenting a pipeline, explaining why a statistical method is appropriate, translating a notebook into maintainable modules, or reviewing a lengthy technical specification. The exact feature set is plan-dependent, so “Claude can run Python” should not be read as a promise that every account or model includes the same environment.

For data exploration, ask it to emit the complete code, package versions or assumptions when relevant, row counts before and after filtering, and a machine-readable summary of results. That makes the conversation easier to reproduce outside the sandbox.

Gemini: strongest when your data already lives in Google’s ecosystem

Google documents that the Gemini web app can accept documents, spreadsheets, notebooks, code folders, and GitHub repositories. Its help material also says you can ask it to create a chart from uploaded spreadsheets, zoom in to explore the chart, and customise the chart. Google describes higher limits through Google AI Pro or Ultra, although the exact allowance is subject to change.

This matters when your analysis is distributed across a Drive folder, a Sheets workbook, a notebook, and supporting documents. Instead of exporting every item into a new format, you can keep the work close to the files and services your team already uses. Gemini is therefore a natural first choice for a Workspace-centred team, especially when related files and cross-document context matter more than a single, tightly controlled Python session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer a fixed maximum from a general statement such as “up to 10 files.” Google documents up to 10 files in one prompt subject to availability, and limits can differ by plan, file type, account, and region. Check the current interface and plan description at the time you work.

Comparison by the tasks data scientists actually perform

Task ChatGPT Claude Gemini Best way to judge the result
Statistical reasoning and test selection Can explain a proposed test and analyze uploaded data with code-backed work. Can reason through method choice and use sandboxed Python where available. Can discuss methods and analyze uploaded files; the exact execution workflow depends on the account and file context. Require assumptions, null and alternative hypotheses, effect size, confidence interval, and a reproducible calculation.
Python generation and debugging Can write, run, and review Python for supported Data Analysis tasks. Sandboxed Python and coding work are central documented capabilities. Can work with uploaded notebooks and code folders; execution and integration details vary. Run the code locally with pinned dependencies and tests.
CSV/XLSX exploratory analysis Documented inspection, tables, charts, and code-backed analysis. Possible through the available analysis environment; confirm file and plan support. Documented spreadsheet uploads and chart creation, with higher limits on paid Google AI plans. Check parsing, missing values, duplicate rows, units, dates, and categorical encodings yourself.
Chart creation Can create charts from analyzed uploads. Can generate code for charts and execute it when the sandbox is available. Can create, zoom, and customise charts from uploaded spreadsheets. Inspect axis units, aggregation, outliers, uncertainty, and whether the chart answers the question.
Long documents and notebooks Useful for document analysis within the current model and plan limits. Strong fit for long-form technical reasoning; current context and plan limits must be checked. Supports documents, notebooks, code folders, and repositories, with account-dependent limits. Ask for section-level citations or file-and-line references, then spot-check them.
Google or other ecosystem integration Best considered as a self-contained upload and analysis workflow unless your account offers additional connectors. Best considered as a coding and reasoning workspace unless your account provides a required integration. Most compelling when Drive, Sheets, Docs, notebooks, or Workspace already hold the source material. Test the exact sign-in, sharing, connector, and export path your team will use.
Privacy and training controls Read the current account controls before uploading confidential data. Read the current account, team, and platform terms before uploading confidential data. Google states that prompts and shared files are processed. With Keep Activity enabled, some uploaded media may be used to improve Google services with human reviewers. Use approved accounts, minimise sensitive fields, and obtain organisational approval.
Speed and reliability Varies by model, load, file size, and prompt. Varies by model, load, sandbox availability, and prompt. Varies by model, file count, integrations, and account. Repeat a small evaluation set under the same conditions rather than relying on anecdotes.

Which is best for Python data analysis?

Start with ChatGPT when you want a documented, interactive path from an uploaded dataset to executed Python, tables, and charts. It is a good fit for exploratory analysis, quick quality checks, and explaining code-backed results to a mixed technical audience.

Start with Claude when the primary deliverable is code or a technical explanation: a debugging session, a refactored module, a notebook review, or a written rationale for an analysis design. Its sandboxed Python capability is relevant when you want execution alongside that reasoning, but confirm that your current plan exposes it.

Start with Gemini when the Python work is inseparable from Google-hosted material. A notebook, several spreadsheets, supporting documents, and a Drive-based handoff can be more important than choosing the assistant with the most convenient isolated execution view. If you need a strict local environment, export the generated code and run it yourself.

Which is better for statistics?

For statistical work, the deciding question is not which assistant can name more tests. It is whether the tool helps you make the assumptions and calculations inspectable. Give each candidate the same small, known dataset and ask it to:

  1. Describe the variables, units, missingness, duplicates, and likely data-generating process.
  2. State the research question and distinguish exploratory from confirmatory analysis.
  3. Propose one primary test and explain why alternatives are less suitable.
  4. Check independence, distributional assumptions, sample size, outliers, and multiple-comparison issues.
  5. Report an effect size and uncertainty, not only a p-value.
  6. Show executable Python and the exact rows or columns used.
  7. Run a sensitivity analysis when a reasonable assumption is doubtful.

ChatGPT’s documented code-backed analysis can make this sequence straightforward. Claude’s coding-oriented workflow can be effective when you want to iterate on the statistical code and explanation together. Gemini can handle the same reasoning while keeping spreadsheet-heavy work close to Google files. None of those strengths removes the need for a human check: an eloquent explanation can still select an inappropriate test, silently coerce dates, or drop rows.

CSV, Excel, and exploratory data analysis workflow

1. Prepare a safe, informative sample

Before uploading, remove direct identifiers and unnecessary free-text fields. Preserve a data dictionary, units, timezone, and the meaning of missing values in a separate note. If the full dataset is sensitive or too large, create a representative sample and state how it was sampled. Keep a local copy of the original file so you can compare every transformation.

2. Ask for an audit before asking for a conclusion

Use a prompt such as: “Profile every column, report row and column counts, infer data types, list missing and duplicate values, flag impossible ranges, and show the code. Do not make recommendations yet.” This separates mechanical inspection from interpretation and exposes parsing errors early.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Require a transformation log

For every filter, join, imputation, encoding, or aggregation, ask the assistant to state the input and output row counts and the reason for the operation. A chart created after an undocumented filter is not a reliable finding.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

4. Inspect charts rather than accepting them as evidence

Check labels, scales, aggregation level, bin widths, denominators, and whether a truncated axis exaggerates a difference. Gemini’s documented chart workflow lets you zoom and customise an uploaded spreadsheet chart; equivalent requests in the other assistants should still be reviewed against the source table.

5. Export reproducible code and data

Save the final script or notebook, the environment specification, the input-file hash or version, and the generated outputs. Conversational state is convenient for exploration but is not a substitute for an auditable artifact.

Handling long notebooks, papers, and code repositories

Long-context support is useful only when you can tell what the assistant actually read. Upload or connect the notebook and supporting files, then request a map of filenames, sections, and dependencies. Ask for answers with file names, headings, or line ranges so you can spot-check them.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a notebook, useful staged requests are:

  1. Inventory cells, imported data, outputs, and external dependencies.
  2. Identify cells that mutate shared state or rely on execution order.
  3. Find data leakage, train/test contamination, and non-deterministic steps.
  4. Rewrite the critical path as a clean script or pipeline.
  5. Generate tests for shapes, types, ranges, and expected invariants.

Claude’s long-form coding and reasoning orientation can suit this review. Gemini’s support for notebooks, code folders, repositories, and related documents is useful when the material is already organised in Google-connected locations. ChatGPT’s upload and code-backed analysis is useful when you want to inspect selected files and produce tables or charts in the same conversation. Context limits, truncation behavior, and file support vary, so ask the assistant to acknowledge which files it used.

Privacy: what to check before uploading data

Treat a consumer AI upload as a data-processing decision, not merely a file attachment. Review your organisation’s policy, the account type, retention controls, access permissions, and whether conversation data can be used to improve the service.

Google’s October 13, 2026 Gemini notice says prompts and shared files are processed. It also says that, with Keep Activity enabled, some uploaded media may be used to improve Google services with human reviewers. If your dataset contains personal, regulated, confidential, or proprietary information, determine whether Keep Activity can be disabled, whether the account is covered by an organisational agreement, and whether the feature is allowed at all.

Apply the same discipline to ChatGPT and Claude: use the approved workspace account, remove identifiers, upload the minimum necessary columns, and confirm current training and retention controls rather than relying on a setting remembered from an older version. Do not paste credentials, private keys, access tokens, or unredacted customer records into a prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plans, file limits, and changing model names

Subscription prices, model names, context windows, file limits, and tool availability are moving targets. Anthropic’s model overview and Google DeepMind’s model-cards index both show active model-lineup changes. A comparison that freezes a model name or price can become wrong even when its workflow advice remains sound.

Before paying, check these items in the product’s current plan and help pages:

  • Whether file upload and Python execution are included in your plan.
  • Maximum file size, number of files per prompt, total storage, and daily or monthly usage limits.
  • Supported formats, including CSV, XLSX, notebooks, code folders, and repositories.
  • Whether charts are generated directly or only through code you must run elsewhere.
  • Context limits for long documents and what happens when content is truncated.
  • Team administration, data-retention, training, and regional controls.
  • Export options for code, tables, charts, and conversation history.

Google documents up to 10 files in one Gemini prompt subject to availability and says Google AI Pro or Ultra provide higher limits. That is a useful planning signal, not a permanent quota. The current Claude pricing page describes sandboxed Python for platform users, but plan availability and pricing are volatile. ChatGPT’s Data Analysis documentation describes the workflow, while your account determines the applicable allowance.

A fair hands-on evaluation you can run

If your team is choosing among the three, use the same files, prompts, model tier, and scoring rubric. Do not compare a paid model in one product with a free model in another and call the result a product verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare a test pack: one clean CSV, one messy XLSX, a short statistical scenario with a known answer, a notebook with a deliberate bug, and a long technical document.
  2. Freeze the task wording: use identical prompts and specify that the assistant must show code, assumptions, row counts, and uncertainty.
  3. Score mechanics: record whether files parse correctly, transformations are visible, charts have correct labels, and code runs without hidden state.
  4. Score reasoning: assess test selection, handling of missingness, interpretation of effect size, and acknowledgement of uncertainty.
  5. Score reproducibility: run the generated code outside the assistant and compare key values with an independently calculated result.
  6. Score operations: measure time to first useful output, interruptions, upload failures, export quality, and the effort required to repeat the analysis.
  7. Record conditions: note date, model, plan, region, account settings, file sizes, and prompt versions.

Keep a failure log. A tool that is slightly less impressive on a demo but reliably exports correct code may be the better choice for a team.

Common failure modes and fixes

The assistant gives a confident but unsuitable test

Ask it to state assumptions, propose alternatives, and explain how the conclusion changes if those assumptions fail. Re-run the selected method in a statistics package or notebook and have a qualified reviewer sign off.

Rows disappear without explanation

Request before-and-after counts for every filter and join, plus a list of excluded keys. Compare the assistant’s output with a local profile of the original file.

Dates, currencies, or categories are misread

Provide explicit formats, locale, timezone, currency, and category definitions. Ask for a sample of parsed values and reject any analysis that silently converts ambiguous strings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The chart looks persuasive but answers the wrong question

State the intended denominator and comparison. Inspect the underlying table, not only the visual, and require uncertainty intervals or raw counts where appropriate.

A long upload is only partly used

Ask for a file inventory and section-level references. Split the work into smaller batches and compare the answers. Do not assume that an attached file was fully ingested merely because the interface accepted it.

Code works in the assistant but not locally

Request imports, versions, random seeds, input paths, and environment assumptions. Export a minimal script, install dependencies in an isolated environment, and add tests for key outputs.

Independent analyst or student

Choose ChatGPT for a guided first pass through a CSV or spreadsheet, especially when tables and charts are central. Use Claude instead if most of your time is spent learning, debugging, or rewriting Python. Choose Gemini when your coursework and source files are already organised in Drive or Sheets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Researcher handling papers and notebooks

Start with the assistant that can ingest your actual file set and produce references you can verify. Claude is a strong candidate for extended technical reasoning; Gemini is convenient for notebook and repository collections in its supported ecosystem; ChatGPT is convenient for focused uploads and code-backed tables and charts. In all cases, preserve the original notebook and reproduce the analysis independently.

Team using Google Workspace

Gemini is the logical first trial because the documented workflow covers Drive-style documents, spreadsheets, notebooks, code folders, repositories, and spreadsheet charts. Evaluate sharing permissions and Keep Activity before uploading company data.

Engineer building a repeatable pipeline

Use the assistants to draft, explain, and debug code, but keep execution in your controlled environment. Claude may fit a code-first workflow, ChatGPT may speed up exploratory profiling, and Gemini may help when the inputs are Google-hosted. The production system should not depend on hidden conversational state.

How to make the final choice

Pick the product that minimises friction for your dominant workflow, not the one with the most impressive isolated answer. For upload-first analysis, begin with ChatGPT. For coding and long technical reasoning, begin with Claude and confirm sandbox access. For Google-connected, multi-file work, begin with Gemini and review its activity and reviewer settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then run a short, controlled evaluation using your own representative files. Recheck current plans, prices, model names, limits, and privacy settings immediately before purchase or deployment. Whichever assistant you select, make the final statistical judgment in a reproducible environment and retain the data, code, assumptions, and outputs needed for another person to audit.
