Yes. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users on March 31, 2026. That is a company-reported weekly-use figure—not a count of paying customers or of everyone who has ever tried ChatGPT.
How quickly is ChatGPT growing?
The reported milestone followed a substantial increase over the previous several months. TechCrunch said OpenAI’s figure rose from 800 million weekly active users in October 2025 to 900 million in February 2026. OpenAI then reported more than 900 million on March 31, 2026.
| Reported period | Weekly active users | Attribution |
|---|---|---|
| October 2025 | 800 million | OpenAI figure reported by TechCrunch |
| February 2026 | 900 million | OpenAI figure reported by TechCrunch |
| March 31, 2026 | More than 900 million | OpenAI announcement |
The October-to-February comparison is an increase of 100 million reported weekly active users. These are company figures relayed by OpenAI or TechCrunch, not a continuous independently measured count; the dates matter because usage totals can change quickly.
Does that mean 900 million people pay for ChatGPT?
No. In its March 31 announcement, OpenAI separately reported more than 50 million subscribers. Weekly active users and subscribers are different measures, so the weekly-user total should not be described as a paying-customer count. The announcement does not provide a complete breakdown of weekly users by free and paid plan.

Are people using ChatGPT more deeply over time?
OpenAI’s June 30, 2026 Signals analysis found that people in its study used ChatGPT more often and for a wider range of tasks six months after signing up.
- They sent 50% more messages per day than when they signed up.
- They had tried twice as many distinct tasks on ChatGPT.
The analysis used a 0.1% sample of users whose accounts were created between October 15, 2025, and May 1, 2026, with activity tracked through May 31, 2026. It describes that sample and period; it should not be treated as a measurement of every ChatGPT user.

Is ChatGPT’s adoption spreading across the world?
OpenAI says adoption accelerated across regions and that lower-HDI countries had the fastest relative growth in weekly active users since July 2023. This is a comparison of growth rates, not evidence that those countries have the largest absolute user totals. The analysis does not provide a country-by-country ranking in the findings summarized here.
What does the user base mean for businesses?
In an April 8, 2026 enterprise article, OpenAI argued that broad consumer use can make workplace deployment easier because employees already know how to use ChatGPT. That is the company’s explanation of a possible advantage—not an independent estimate showing that familiarity causes faster or more successful enterprise adoption.

How should ChatGPT’s scale be compared with other AI apps?
OpenAI’s March announcement also claimed ChatGPT had six times the monthly web visits and mobile sessions of the next-largest AI app, and four times that app’s total AI time spent. Those are company-reported comparisons. The announcement does not fully specify the competitor set, measurement window, or audit method, so the figures should not be treated as a like-for-like independent ranking. A sound comparison would align the metric, date, geography, free-versus-paid mix, engagement measure, and source for every product.
