PCWorld reported on October 2, 2026, that ChatGPT Pro 200’s usage advantage over Plus is shifting from 20× to 10×. That is a reported comparison—not evidence that every model or feature allowance was cut in half. OpenAI’s Help Center separately confirms that some new Pro 200 subscriptions receive a lower allowance than the plan previously offered, while the price remains $200 per month.

What “cut in half” means—and what it does not

The headline figure comes from PCWorld’s account of a rough chart shared by OpenAI’s Thibault Sottiaux. It describes Pro 200’s usage relative to the $20/month Plus plan: 20× before, and 10× under the reported change. PCWorld characterizes that shift as a 50% reduction.

The searched OpenAI Help Center pages confirm a lower allowance for some new Pro 200 subscribers, but do not show the ratio chart. The exact 20× and 10× comparison therefore remains a media-reported figure, not an independently verifiable official plan-wide formula. It also does not tell you a fixed number of messages for each model, or establish that each feature’s allowance was halved.

PCWorld quoted Sottiaux, identified as OpenAI’s Head of Core Products, saying: “We don’t want to put an incentive on ourselves to artificially inflate the API list prices to make it look like [subscribers] are getting a lot (and workaround it through discounts, etc).”

What changes for Pro 200 subscribers

OpenAI’s Help Center says the Pro 200 price remains $200 per month even when the lower allowance applies. Eligible subscribers retain the previous allowance through October 29, 2026, provided their Pro 200 subscription stays active; after that date, it moves to the lower allowance. The eligibility language refers to account status at a cutoff or during the preceding seven days.

The same documentation says Pro 200 has a greater usage allowance than Pro 100, which costs $100 per month. Both tiers include access to advanced features. The official pages searched do not provide enough feature-by-feature allowance detail to calculate how much more usage either tier gives for a particular model or task.

Pro 100, Pro 200 and Plus compared

Plan Monthly price Usage comparison Important qualification
Plus $20 Baseline for PCWorld’s reported Pro 200 comparison The reported 10× figure is relative to Plus; it is not a per-model message count.
Pro 100 $100 Lower usage allowance than Pro 200, according to OpenAI’s Help Center The searched official pages do not state a numerical Pro 100-to-Plus ratio.
Pro 200 $200 PCWorld reports a shift from 20× to 10× Plus usage OpenAI confirms a lower allowance for some new subscriptions; the precise reported ratio is not shown in the searched official documentation.

Model limits are separate from this plan-level comparison. OpenAI says usage limits vary by plan and model. When you reach a model’s allowance, that model may become temporarily unavailable; ChatGPT may offer another model or show a reset time. Reaching a model limit does not itself end the subscription, and Pro should not be read as unlimited access to every Pro model.

Is Pro 200 still worth $200 a month?

The change matters most if you use Pro 200 heavily and are counting on the previous allowance to avoid interruptions. For someone whose work depends on sustained access to specific models, the relevant question is whether their own usage fits the current model-specific limits—not whether the plan is described as 10× Plus overall. OpenAI’s available documentation does not establish how many subscribers are affected, how reductions are distributed, or how much completed work changes in practice.

  • Consider the $100 Pro tier if its lower allowance is likely to cover your workload; OpenAI says it includes access to advanced features, but its exact usage comparison is not stated in the searched documentation.
  • Keep Pro 200 only if its higher allowance and included features justify the $200 monthly cost for your actual use. Check the model limits relevant to your work before relying on it.
  • Reassess Plus if your usage does not require Pro’s higher allowance. PCWorld’s reported multiplier is a rough relative comparison, not a promise of a particular number of prompts.

Check current availability and your allowance

Availability information in the surfaced OpenAI Help Center versions conflicts. One says new Pro 200 signups and upgrades were temporarily paused starting September 10, 2026, while another says new subscriptions are available again. Because the plan page is dynamic, confirm its live status before making a purchase or advising someone to upgrade. The allowance transition and model limits can also change, so consult the current plan and model documentation for your account.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
