ChatGPT’s Windows desktop app became available in early access on October 17, 2024, several months after OpenAI introduced its macOS desktop experience. It launched through the Microsoft Store for Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users, with Alt + Space opening a Companion Window for quick access. OpenAI cautioned that the early Windows build lacked some features available on macOS and the web; later updates added voice, chat search, webcam photos, and screenshots.
When did ChatGPT come to Windows?
OpenAI announced the early Windows app on October 17, 2024. At launch, it was available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users as an early version rather than a feature-complete counterpart to the macOS and web experiences.
The exact macOS launch date is not established here, so the timing can be described as several months later, but not with a more precise date comparison.
How to download the Windows app
OpenAI distributes the ChatGPT Windows app through the Microsoft Store. OpenAI lists Windows 10 (x64 or arm64), version 17763.0 or higher, as the system requirement.

- Open the Microsoft Store on a compatible Windows PC.
- Search for ChatGPT and select the app published by OpenAI.
- Choose the install option, then launch ChatGPT and sign in.
For managed enterprise deployments, OpenAI also documents installation using winget. Whether employees can install Store apps may depend on their organization’s Microsoft Store policies and IT administrator controls.
What the Windows app did at launch
Alt + Space Companion Window
The signature shortcut, Alt + Space, opens a Companion Window over the app you are using. From it, you can ask a question, upload files, generate an image, or start a conversation without first switching to the main ChatGPT window. OpenAI described the shortcut as a way to get faster access to ChatGPT on a PC.

Feature parity with macOS and the web
No: at launch, Windows did not include every feature available on macOS and the web. OpenAI explicitly warned: “Please note that a subset of features available in the macOS and web version may not be available on this early version.” That caveat applied to the early build, not necessarily to the app’s later feature set.

OpenAI added features in a series of updates after the initial release. These dated milestones show how the early app expanded:

OpenAI’s current desktop direction is a single app for macOS and Windows that combines Chat, Work, and Codex. If the former desktop app remains installed, it may appear as ChatGPT Classic. OpenAI says Classic continues to receive model updates, bug fixes, security patches, and support for existing Enterprise capabilities.

This newer product direction is distinct from the 2024 launch story: the original Windows app arrived as an early release with acknowledged feature gaps, while OpenAI now describes a unified desktop app across the two operating systems.
