A dot can continue an ongoing goal, research permitted connected information, and run reminders or recurring tasks you schedule. This is not unlimited background access: connected-app permissions, workspace settings, availability, and approval rules determine what it can do.
What a ChatGPT dot does in the background
OpenAI describes a dot as an always-on ChatGPT agent that can take on ongoing responsibility and make progress between conversations. You can give it a goal, ask it to research a topic, connect supported apps, or schedule reminders and recurring checks. A dot may also review information from permitted connected sources proactively and save notes or memories.
Scheduled runs and proactive updates appear in the conversation. You can review active, paused, and completed work, or pause the dot. Background work is cloud-based; your computer does not need to remain on for ordinary cloud work.
Research is not the same as taking action
OpenAI says proactive research can read information from connected sources the dot is permitted to access and save private notes. Those research tools cannot directly message other people, change content through plugins, or control a browser or computer. If you later ask the dot to act, the usual action rules and safety checks apply. See OpenAI’s Dots privacy, security, and safety FAQs.

Who can use dots, and where
As described in OpenAI’s current Getting started with your dot guide, availability depends on plan, location, and workspace settings:
- ChatGPT Pro: The guide lists access outside the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the UK.
- Business Premium: The guide lists access in supported ChatGPT regions.
- Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare: The beta can be enabled by a workspace administrator; Enterprise access is initially off by default.
OpenAI says the first dot is included in Pro or Business Premium at no extra cost. Rollout is gradual, so an eligible account may not receive access immediately; the guide says it can take several days. These are the conditions in the current documentation, not a guarantee that eligibility will remain unchanged.

How to create a dot and keep it working
- Open ChatGPT on desktop web or in the desktop app. OpenAI’s guide says you cannot currently create a dot on mobile, and dots are not supported on mobile web. You may be able to talk to a dot in the mobile app once mobile access is available.
- Create the dot and give it a specific ongoing goal. State what it should monitor or research, which connected information it may use, and when it should provide updates.
- Connect only the apps it needs. The dot can use information available through the permissions you grant and any applicable workspace controls; connecting it does not open access to every app or website.
- Set reminders or recurring checks if needed. You can also review the dot’s work in its conversation and pause it when you do not want it continuing.
- Configure messaging from desktop if you use it. OpenAI says setup for channels such as Slack or texting is done from desktop. Whether those options are available depends on account and workspace settings.
Cloud computer versus your own computer
Every dot has its own cloud computer. Connecting your personal or work computer is optional and starts disabled. To use local-computer access, connect a computer through the desktop app and explicitly allow access. That is a separate path from ordinary cloud work, and it may have different availability and controls.
For Enterprise local-computer access, OpenAI’s workspace management guide says the member must keep the computer online and the ChatGPT app open. Cloud-computer work can still be used where the relevant cloud capabilities are enabled. In other words, closing the app is compatible with cloud-based work, but not with a local-computer task that requires the connected device to stay available.

Permissions, approvals, and mistakes
A dot’s reach depends on connected-app authorization, plugin controls, and workspace settings. Administrators can separately control dot access, Slack or Teams use, local-computer access, custom rules, and cloud browser, network, and computer capabilities. A particular dot may therefore have fewer capabilities than the feature’s general description suggests.
Some consequential work needs your involvement. OpenAI says especially sensitive actions, such as changing a password or transferring money, require you to complete the action. Other actions, including permanently deleting data or installing software, may require approval each time. Advance approval applies only to the action specifically authorized. OpenAI also warns that dots can make mistakes, so review consequential work rather than assuming it is correct.

What happens to a dot’s context and data
OpenAI says a dot may retain context from its conversations and connected plugins for as long as the dot exists. Deleting the dot deletes its own context, though separately stored files and conversations may remain. Disconnecting an app stops new access to that service but does not erase information the dot has already incorporated into its context.
For personal plans, the “Improve the model for everyone” setting controls whether eligible dot conversations and work may be used for model improvement. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu data is not used to train models by default. Check the privacy and safety FAQs for the current details.

How dots differ from ChatGPT Work scheduled tasks
Dots and ChatGPT Work are related agent features, but they are not interchangeable names for one capability. OpenAI’s July 9, 2026 Business release notes describe ChatGPT Work as an agent for longer tasks that can research, analyze connected apps and files, produce deliverables, and run scheduled tasks. The August 25, 2026 ChatGPT release notes describe webhook-triggered Work tasks for Gmail messages, Slack channel messages, and GitHub pull request activity, along with task sharing and approval pauses for consequential actions. Those Work features should not be assumed to be part of every dot.
